FINALLY - My first look at the Wizard3D W1 3D Printer. Wizard3D is run by 14-year-old Max Leabman in California. He built and sent this 3d printer to me to have a look at. I'm VERY thankful Max reached out! It runs Klipper, Mainsail + Moonraker, Rpi3+, TMC2209. Has a build volume of 310 x 310 x 390!

Great job, you've definitely got a bright future. With some stronger material and maybe heat sunk screw mounts this build will be solid as a tank and be able to handle high speed as well as high res. Good luck on your venture, I'm poor lol but if I can ever afford one I'll be getting one of yours. I really like and appreciate not only the effort and hard work but the personal aspect too. Nothing makes any product better than when someone's heart and soul and passion are behind the whole thing. Keep up the awesome work!

@vhoward1122
@vhoward1122 2 жыл бұрын
I know Krylon makes a paint specifically for plastic that won't degrade the plastic. It is not that popular because it take a lot longer to dry/cure. That's because they removed the solvents that flash off quickly and the solvents are what weakens the plastic.
@S_Roach
@S_Roach 2 жыл бұрын
I had the same thought. The plastic shouldn't have been crumbly.
@vanceblosser2155
@vanceblosser2155 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with this. I have also had issues with painted PLA - some solvents do affect it, and although they don't dissolve it they make it weaken and get soft and crumbly. Similar to acetone - it will dissolve ABS but makes PLA get kind of chalky and weakens it.

I’m 14 too and just got my ender 3 and its way more fun that I thought. First print was a calibration cube and it turned out nearly perfect. I’ve only had one failed print so far and it was my fault, but it was within the first 10 min of the print so not much waste. Eventually I’ll do the noise mods and maybe even extend the build volume. Ive built a computer and a assembled 3d printer no problem so I think i could build a 3d printer once i learn more about them. Max is one of a kind and we need more people like him. I don't want to rain on the parade, and call me overly cynical but this printer is a Voron with some parts that dont improve the design - and possibly degrade it. The builder is undoubtedly bright but this isnt ready for commercial sale - basic things like wire management, packing without damage to name a few should be addressed before he starts selling them. I personally think Joel should have given the feedback in private sent the printer back (its almost $1000 in parts and thats a lot of money for most 14 year olds) and Wizard3d could spend a few more months ironing things out before sale - there is certainly a market for voron-esque printers that are fully (or largely) assembeled. If he starts selling printers as is, it will cause him no end of pain with complaints and returns and possibly ruin the business before it has had an oppurtunity to start.

Max, this is a great start for your business and 3D printer. The thought that your 14 and doing things like this makes me super excited to see what the future holds for the 3Dcommunity. I can't wait to see the minor bugs worked out cuz I think you have a really good thing here. I would like to see how things are progressing for you from time to time and I think when the printers are ready for market you are going to present concern for the "big boys... i.e. creality, Prusa, etc". Now it's just a matter of time until you see clones of your designs and printer come out. Bottom line Max, keep up the phenomenal work! Lots of people are rooting for you and want to see you succeed. Nice effort, especially considering his young age. However my advice to the young man would be to establish direct contact with parts suppliers to make his own Wizard1 brand parts that assemble together still keeping the Voron inspired coreXY design. As he has it now, people will always consider it as still a Voron just with upgraded PSU and display.

Well done Max, I think the quality control issued faced all come down to the rather meagre budget an average 14 year old has. One thing I would suggest would be to try to think outside the box. One thing you have that us old timers have lost over the years is an active imagination. Just put your feet up and think of the stuff that you really wish your 3d printer had but is currently not available on any 3d printer in the market. Take your time. Hopefully in the next few years I will have and Wizard3d printer in my basement with certain capabilities only available with the Wizard3d brand.

Hey Joel! Instead of using long screws to secure the frame (which is totally fine) you can use 5mm pan-heads which fit nicely into the T-slots. You then drill a small hole through the extrusion that's just big enough to fit the "allen" wrench. Assembly is fairly easy because you can have all of your bolts screwed into the ends of the extrusions before you even start the assembly: simply slide the parts together and tighten. It makes a really clean look (can't see the screws at all) and gives you full access to all the T-slots. It's best to make a hole drilling jig that clamps into the T-slot for accuracy/repeatability. A 3d printed one would work for a while (there are plenty on Thiniverse "2040 drill guide") but I made mine out of steel. One thing to mention is that when using this method, or the method you mentioned is to make sure your extrusions are cut VERY squarely. I recently got some 2040 from China and the cut on the end was off by more than a millimeter over 40mm which is almost 1.5 degrees off.

Excellent for a go at 14! I was too busy playing computer games. Perhaps at this point you could offer a Voron build service? You can get to build (which is fun) while learning and tweaking your designs. People are more likely to spend money on a well tested and know entity than a "gamble" on an unknown design. Maybe offer it alongside the W1?

This sounds like a good start. Let us know when they are able to start shipping and more importantly updates on his side of the business. Him being in California, that might limit the types of foam he is able to procure as a startup. Cardboard is much easier to get in bulk. Do some tetris engineering and make the printer in kit form, flatter pack. Take that package design to a local cardboard/corrugate factory or processor, get quotes for quantity and lead times.
@AndrewGillard
@AndrewGillard 2 жыл бұрын
A lot of people prefer recyclable packaging (e.g. cardboard) over even more single-use plastic as well. In Vector 3D's recent printer unboxing & build livestreams, he's criticised any printers being shipped in blocks of foam. Yes, it's good protection during shipping, but then it probably just goes to landfill. Prusa's got cardboard packaging working well, I believe (from watching other livestreams), so it can be done 👍

That ringing could be because the drivers are switching between spreadcycle and stealthchop which negates input shaper. The stealthchop threshold in the printercfg should be 999999 to keep it in stealthchop mode and then retune input shaper. I had the same issue and that solved it for me.

Love the ambition of this young guy. But also let's be realistic. He is basically selling a design from someone else (except from some parts), but with a lot of issues. Also when selling it as a complete printer there are compliance rules to consider. There are a lot of things that come with selling a printer officially instead of diy at home. He should really get some mentoring in that area at least. When people starting to pay for it they might be less forgiving as Joel.

So that may be what has happened here. Maybe Max should get a custom color of filament made to print his parts so these kind of problems do not arise in the future.
