TW: Many mentions of physical ab*se | Tricked into moving to Iraq at age 14, Ellaf was separated from her mother and forced into a chiId marriage by her father who felt she was too much of a burden to raise. Ellaf’s husband was even more controlling than her father and knew that he could get away with hurting her in many ways, because she was alone in an unfamiliar country and didn’t know the culture or the language. Forbidden to use birth control, she had 3 chiIdren before she was 21 years old and after years of suffering, courageously stood up to both her husband and father and got away. This is her story of perseverance and victory against all odds.

My sisters and I were always treated like a burden. I spent all my childhood and teenage years trapped in a tiny house under my parents control. We were only allowed to leave the house to go to school. Luckily my parents finally decided to leave the country and migrate to New Zealand. The first few weeks they treated us even worse because they were worried we would be “westrenised” and become “whores”. But it backfired on them because that what gave me the courage to break free and leave them. I studied, got my bachelors degree and started my career. Met an amazing man and got married and we have a beautiful daughter. I didn’t bother teaching her Arabic, I don’t want her to end up with any man from misogynistic culture. I’m atheist and raising my daughter with no religion bs. I’m giving her the life I’ve never had. I’ve been free for 21 years now and to this day I still have nightmares finding myself back in Iraq.

I had my daughter at 19 and ran to the nearest police station just before she turned 1 . Thankgod I was in Australia and Australian. Parents too my exes side becuase men can do no wrong ….. I have been remarried to a non Muslim, left Islam , my daughter is now 15 and I have a son with my current husband. I owe everything I have to australia and for helping my daughter and I. Now that she is 15 , I could never imagine forcing marriage or forcing anything on her for that matter. Listening to these women brings back memories,,, but not bag ones… just memories that it happened…. Once ur happy… things start to fade.

@@pennybarker1596Look into getting a Teaching as a Second Language Certificate. There are lots of organisations, you can get a course for very cheap, and honestly it teaches teaching methodologies and is very useful in other aspects of your life regardless! It takes some time but isn't too difficult. Then you can contact volunteer organisations, or if you don't have something similar in your area, you could get in contact with local outreach programmes. I have mixed feelings on religious-motivated ones, but there's no doubt that local churches are often a hub for programmes like this and benefit can be found with ANYBODY who is disadvantaged by a lack of language.

@@hydratejsn, cultural trauma and trauma culture are real things. It’s sort of a feedback loop. People are traumatized and thus whatever way they learned to cope/survive, good or bad, becomes what they teach their children. A real common one is teaching kids to be tough. Some people take this too far unintentionally and traumatize their kids, even if the kids aren’t living during the same war/disaster/oppression that traumatized the parents. Whole communities feed into this loop, sometimes on purpose trying to help and also sometimes because they never learned a more healthy way to cope while they were on the run or whatever they had to do.

A lot of immigrants from outside the west believe where they come from is superior. They come to the U.S. because they secretly like all the options available to them. The biggest driving factor is economics. The U.S. is a rich nation, so even the majority of those who suffer aren’t suffering like the way would from where many of these immigrants come from. They want the US dollar conversion to send back to their families and to live with a possibility of more mobility than they would have back home. Because the U.S. is so economically powerful, they admire it. But many of them have a deep resentment for it because they were not primed to succeed in western culture in the way someone who grew up in it is. They feel out of place and have taken a hit to their social standing in comparison to where they come from. It makes them harbor deep resentment. It also makes them have a misaligned complex. They develop a superiority based inferiority complex. They feel so inferior about the lack of options and abundance from where they come from when they compare how things are there to many places in the west. Instead of analyzing their own cultures and fixing the things that lead to them being less abundant, they are taught to hate the U.S. and the west for everything. Their leaders do not want to do anything for them, but they are too afraid to speak up about admitting the dysfunction in their communities because to them, in a way, they are admitting defeat to places in the west. Of course, being honest about this would trigger them into stating their culture is superior as a defense mechanism. But they know that is not true. Otherwise, they would not feel compelled to come to the U.S. Obviously, if things are going well, why would you want to leave where you come from? Why are you willing to deal with ostracism and take a hit to your social standing? They don’t know how to rectify this without sounding pathetic and so they cope by doubling down on their hatred of places in the west and western culture. If the west was not so economically abundant, they would not bother trying to come. But to them, it is a paradox that it is while sustaining a “haram” culture with weak citizens who don’t know real hardship.

A man in a limo stepped out and nodded. He then told me he wanted me to be his first wife and give him blue eyed babies. He said my dad would be paid well for me. He is on wife #4, and he made good money in the oilfield work. My mother was oppressed, emotionally abused, used as his cook, cleaner, his slave. So this made her unloving. I cut both of them just to survive. My brother put me in a closet after telling me to undress. I escaped, so he us cut off as well. Unsafe, unloving humans, cousins drink and love my drinking dad, who also laughed at me. They just want us in the kitchen as servants. Yeah, no.

Number One: every single person involved in her situation needs be charged as harshly as the law will allow. Number Two: dad, you sold her to her husband. You no longer get to use her as a work horse and income source. Maybe her husband would have treated her better If she handed her money to HIM. It is a small blessing that her first 2 children were boys. The truth seems to be that these men were fighting over WHO GETS to exploit her.. Luckily her father's greed and belief that she was a good source of income for him, she would have been "honour killed" long before she had the chance to save herself and her children. The is NO HONOUR I'm killing a woman! Someone who has been dominated, is weaker, and completely dependant on the men in their family which makes it impossible to fight back. So pathetic, these men. That's WHY people (men of course) still insist on practicing religion. They barely believe but there is so many benefits offered for men that stepping away because it's nonsense is stupid. I imagine they would also be too scared. They go along with things the way most humans do. Look at how people turned on others during covid. Neighbours grassing up neighbours and treating others like dirt because they didn’t fall in line with the narrative. Look at all the other atrocities in the world that humans have gone along with to save themselves. And these days the people who step in to help end up being characterised as doing something wrong.

It seems like her father's relationship with her was the classic scapegoat child relationship. Talking about the desperation to just give her away and then taking her siblings and her mother back to America. Alot of like toxic parents do have that child that for whatever reason they've just convinced themselves is the evil one or the enemy.

It's really dangerous to not being able to question a religion and it's crazy how the Islamic world has convinced the left wing world to never question Islam in anything and even let them think Islam is the religion for feminism. I am so happy to also hear this side, because we need to talk about this side of Islam. We hear enough of those who claim islam is peaceful and feminist. Now we need to hear about the part nobody wants to talk about.

There should never be any shame for leaving ones religion, but letting others to disrespect, mistreat and degrade ones' soul is. It's so refreshing to see criticism of Islam that is *truly* about uplifting the victims. It's been so frustrating to only ever hear politically motivated and dehumanizing concern-trolling about Muslims, from evangelicals and western chauvinistic atheists alike. The entire branch of Abrahamic faith needs to be examined with respect and dignity to those harmed. Thank you Shelise for continuing to platform these incredibly important conversations.

How do you propose they do that? Israel has given refuge to numerous gay Palestinian men, some of these men have later been found and murdered by their families. Yet Israel is considered the bad guy, no one else is standing up for gay Palestinians, in fact, in the West there is Queers for Palestine, despite the basic fact that they would be killed in both the West Bank and Gaza. Israel has also given refuge to Palestinian women fleeing abuse, they are then accused of stealing Palestinian women. You don’t have to believe me, Google shelters in Israel for gay and abused Palestinians. Israeli tax dollars fund these programs, name a single program funded by Palestinians for abused women or gay people. Not one funded by NGOs in the West, but actually funded by the Palestinian people You won’t find it because it doesn’t exist.

So they made sure that the babies were born in America for the citizenship. That's sad about her third birth. They were horrible to her. I'm so glad that hey had tantrums and left.
