Once you start investing into a car there is no going back, you wil fix this then fix that and you end up investing over 2k into a shitbox that is not worth it at all. either fix everything and make a car perfect or don't spend a penny and ride it till it will die.

Most dogged car I ever had was a diesel starlet. Was a hand-me-down through the family, was already 16 years old when dad bought it. Fast forward to 2016 and its suddenly mine, oil leak and all. I never once actually serviced it because it pissed the oil out so quickly it was pointless. I had it for 2 years before it finally cried enough of my torture, after driving around for 2 months with a blown head gasket in the middle of summer. Wasn't even that that killed it. Cambelt snapped after doing about 200000km... really wish I'd looked after it a bit better. Would probably still have it.

Fabio Scerra what about the rust. It would costs thousands to replace the panels and paint them. That’s why they use steel. When the cars become obsolete (it’s not bad but the engine is still old and has poor emissions) it’s time to send them to the scrapyard for parts. Plus the manufacturers want them to break eventually so you can buy the newer models and this stimulates them for investing into new technologies. On the other hand is still cheaper to bring this one to working order instead of buying new one, but it can potentially be cheaper to buy a bit more expensive one with fewer problems, ie something around 3000£

I had a car like this one, and I think it was my favorite car ever. It was a 2004 Malibu. Salvage Title. It was rear ended and sandwiched. It sat in a wreckers yard for about 3 months in Florida with no windshield. A relative purchased it and then left it to us, and we thought, yeah. Free miles, winter beater. We did NOTHING to it, and it ran from 130,00 miles to 250,000 miles with no problems. Funny enough, ours didn't have ABS either. The rebuilder removed all the ABS components. It was like a mangy but faithful little dog. Loved it. Saw us through the recession of the late 2000s. The engine and trans still ran flawlessly when we donated it. The electronic steering rack ended up totaling it because it would no longer pass inspection. The best cars are the ones you don't have to care about! I used to brag to Prius owners about how i recycled a dead car instead of buying new or even used.

My Brother has an E46 325i (same M54 engine but smaller) on 230k and it runs amazingly, drives like a car with half the mileage, services it regularly and does all the work himself to it, had it for nearly 10 years and has no plans to change it.

Re-grease the steering joints at the top of the steering column just on the other side of the firewall in the engine bay. This is what I did for my e36 to free up the steering. There are 4 points on it that dry up. Reached my hand down there and slathered general purpose auto grease all over it. steering was twice as easy to turn and wheel actually started to return to center on its own.

It's not an engine light. The Left red light is engine emissions, the right orange is the brake pads and the right red is where he has the hand brake on. I've had the engine emissions light on my e46 and had to replace a bunch of seals and the air mass meter, could be something else on his but it wouldn't fail the MOT if the values are in the right range.

So true! Bought a 1997 K11 in 2012 with 80k miles on it - thought I'd just use it for a year until I could afford something better. 7 years later the little thing is still running perfectly, sails through every MOT with no issues. Service it once a year to show it that I appreciate it ;) - had to replace two bulbs behind the instruments in 2015 and that's the only thing that has needed fixing. Now on 130k miles and gives me almost 50mpg (actually 49.7mpg - just cannot get it above the 50 mark!!). Am so attached to it now that I will do my utmost to keep it alive!
