26:20 Francis why is there a blob of magma sitting next to the door of your petrol boiler? Next to the heat transfer system, not at the bottom of the heat spike. Did you get an insulated tile to melt into magma?
@jasong18724 жыл бұрын
I think you are right. Looking back at when he built this, it does seem to be an igneous rock insulated tile. With that thermal shift plate on its corner it would definitely have heated up. There was also a block of igneous rock and a piece of iron in that tile when he was building it, which I'm going to guess got trapped inside the block. That could explain where all that magma and molten iron came from at the bottom, it liquified inside the tile and oozed out onto the ground, before the whole tile itself melted.

31:26. Is it worth it to waste all that time to melt such a small ice biome? By now the rate at which you run through water, it kind of seems to me that it would make better sense to just core out the ice and get a head start on the rocket chimney so that you start producing more water more quickly. In other words: aren’t you actually wasting water by taking the time to melt that all down?

I think it's a double edged sword where he loses out either way. He needs as much water as possible and manually demolishing it removes half of the available stockpile of water he is able to run on until he runs out before he gets the chimney in place, yet the time spent melting the ice biome delays that rocket chimney which will solve the water problem. HOWEVER, in melting it, this allowed him to tackle some of the other necessities like the power spine and the start of the shove vole farm while the ice biome is simultaneously melting. So I think it kind of evens out in the end

With 170 tons of algae, you might want to consider the economics of Algae Terrariums. It's only a stopgap solution without a constant source of algae but it's considerably more effective for turning water into oxygen the Electrolyzers. They do require maintenance but it's not like you're short on staff. In addition to oxygen they also produce polluted water which will off-gas more oxygen. They apparently can absorb water from the floor so they can be drip fed water without duplicate intervention till the polluted water needs emptying.

I'd like to add that if someone wanted to use slicksters to provide oil for a sourgas boiler, actually they'd be better of ranching glossy Dreckos. A glossy drecko produces up to 50kg of plastic per cycle which can be turned into 22.2 kg of oxygen through (plastic->naphta->sourgas->methane->pwater->water->oxygen). In this scenario, you'd need about 2.7 dreckos per dupe, most of which can be sheared without being fed. Doing the same with slicksters would require 13.5 slicksters per dupe. They main advantage of slicksters is really the food they provide. But yeah, I agree that a chimney is ultimately the simplest solution.

I've started one with a liquid layer at the bottom - overheated. I've filled one with hydrogen (20kg per tile) and even temp shift plates - overheated. So what am I missing?
@shotmeonsightplease4 жыл бұрын
If the input steam is above a certain point, the excess heat from the steam is turned into heat from the steam turbine. So if you feed it 500*C steam, the steam turbine will generate a LOT of heat, way more then it can self cool. Self cooling really only works if the steam is below 200*C.

Hey Francis John, I'm having a huge issue with the petroleum boiler and I have no idea why. I built it tile for tile like in the tutorials, set the automation wire exactly like how it shows, yet I keep getting a build up of more igneous rock than the mining drill can mine out in the 20 seconds with the filter gate. This is also causing the igneous rock to not be able to fall through the bottom door as well that last tile isn't being mined out in time. I kept trying to troubleshoot but have come up with no reason for why this is and was wondering if this is something you've dealt with?
@xPanda254 жыл бұрын
The build up of igneous eventually causes the magma to flow out the side and come in contact with the metal tile the drill is sitting on, turning the crude oil into sour gas. Granted this takes hundreds of cycles, but it's happened several times as I sometimes leave it running overnight or w/e and will end up having to reload a much earlier save to before it all got destroyed
@randomdude5324 жыл бұрын
@@xPanda25 it sounds either like the door at the top is set to open and close too slowly that it lets too much magma in. Perhaps the door is unpowered or the timing is set wrong? If not then the thermo sensor that sits inside of the igneous rock (which i believe is the sensor that controls the door opening and closing) is set wrong. Most likely you have it set to the opposite of what it needs to be. For instance you have it set to above when it needs to be set to below.
@xPanda254 жыл бұрын
@@randomdude532 I discovered it was actually because my computer couldn't handle the game at that point at the max speed, so it was skipping time within cycles which meant the mining drill didnt actually run for 20 seconds it ran for 16, which over time lets the rock and magma build up

@Khaim.m4 жыл бұрын
Balm lilies may be free but they don't grow very fast. And dreckos require heat and can't live in oxygen, which means you have to build a special environment for them. For early game hatches are easy to set up, for late game voles are most efficient (regolith is also free). I'm sure you can ranch dreckos if you want but I wouldn't really recommend it.

why is there a damage on the liquid pipe in the petroleum boiler? is that because pressure damage or because magma in the inside door?
@xPanda254 жыл бұрын
Several reasons, first possible reason: He stopped pumping in crude oil, and the crude oil was cooling the petroleum down as it goes down the counter flow. Stopping the crude oil means the petroleum heats up a lot, so the next time he starts pumping crude oil in, it gets so hot that it flashes to petroleum inside the pipe and damages it (usually not a problem unless you're using aluminum pipes in which case you'd need to build insulated pipes until flow starts again and then re-pipe it with radiant pipes)
@xPanda254 жыл бұрын
Second possible reason: The wrong liquid got in and damaged the pipe, which he just mopped up and didn't bother with the pipe (which isn't the most likely but still) A third, although you mentioned pipe it could have been a tile that was damaged and this would be because crude oil takes less space than petroleum, and so when it flashes it has to expand in a short amount of time which can sometimes cause damage to the tile. Usually happens on first startup or when the magma stops transferring a lot of heat, meaning the crude stops converting immediately, and then when the magma cycles and dumps A LOT of heat it can flash all that crude oil instantly again causing damage
@tejing20014 жыл бұрын
You mentioned arbor trees have to be wild to be water positive. This isn't quite strictly true, since you can convert polluted dirt partly into polluted water via offgassing to pufts to algae distillers, and adding that on top of the polluted water from the generators burning the ethanol makes it water positive even on domesticated plants. I get that this isn't really an option here, a rocket chimney is the way to go. I just wanted to clarify the possibility.
@anil1svnit4 жыл бұрын
@Francis John Can we use Drecko's Plastic to get Oxygen ?
@grepgrok87354 жыл бұрын
So polluted water bottles have really weird off-gassing mechanics. The short of it is that if you put a whole bunch of bottles on a tile and by putting I think less than 1500 g of water on top makes the bottles off-gas indefinitely. I believe that what is happening is that the bottle measures only the mass of the tile it resides in to decide whether or not to off-gas. Because gas always sits on top of liquid no matter what, the bottle will always read less than 1500g so it will off-gas, gas moves up, bottle reads
@xPanda254 жыл бұрын
He's aware of how off gassing works, and actually has expressed this even in his Rime playthrough. In this map, however, off gassing the water isn't worth the effort to get into. Although it may seem as simple as just sticking a deodorizer next to polluted water, it's a) more valuable to turn it into oxygen via electrolyzer b) requires a ton of filtration medium for the amount of oxygen he would need to produce c) not worth the effort of having to set up a LARGE area for it (again, for the sheer amount of dupes he has to provide oxygen for) and setting up the automation and establishing filters etc. when that effort can go towards the permanent solution of erecting the rocket chimney to supply enough water to cover the deficit the map left him with

Why not give all your dupes an extra bathroom break? Provided you have the bathrooms for them to use, 6.7 times 92 dupes times (for example) two bathroom breaks would net you a little over 1.2 tonnes of (polluted) water in excess after using it,all over the course of 1 cycle. Maybe that'd make for a nice buffer of water until you get the chimney running, in exchange for a slot you could normally use for work.

You see the interaction with the salt water at 38:40? There is actually a bug that allows you to multiply liquid. I found this out using supercoolant. Maybe this can be a good interim water supply solution.

When you do get around to the rocket chimney, make sure the aquatuners run with very small loops of super coolant but with larger loops of petroleum or something to spread out the cooling to the chimney itself. Otherwise you'll need huge quantities of super coolant just to get it started. And it simply isn't worth to use anything else than super coolant in the aquatuners when you need that much cooling. Also, get a rocket running soon so you'll have a bit of space recourses and the research needed for the hydrogen rockets before the chimney is finished.

To get super coolant you first need to get a rare resource from space unless your talking about upgrading it it will just have to be Steam turbines for now

I think bottles of polluted water that sit in a thin puddle of clean water offgas a lot more than they are supposed to... Kinda exploit-y but if you gotta get 141 duplicants enough oxygen to breathe... >.>
@FrancisJohnYT4 жыл бұрын
Water is the source of all long term O2 supplies, does not matter if you electrolize it or off gas it from polluted water. The real bottle neck is always the water source, we just need more of it.

You don't actually have to rot food to have polluted oxygen offgassing. You may also just have botles of polluted water on the ground, as it is not consumed while offgassing, if I'm not mistaken . So you would have to invest a bit of your toilet water, but you would get infinite oxygen out of it. I think Brothgar even made a video on it.
@mikeroch73934 жыл бұрын
He did this in his Baby Base series where he built liquid tanks, filled them up and then deconstructed. I'm surprised as well he isn't considering this. It feels a bit exploity, but if used it there shouldn't have a problem in here as well. :)

You need to remove all extra ladders you don't need. every ladder adds significant calculations to duplicant pathing. if you click a dupe and look at their pathing calculations you'll see why ladders are so bad.

You do NOT have to plant wild trees. Domestic is great with the farming station and that way you'll need 1/8th the amount of trees. You'll get it in no time at all. With the farming station it is very water positive, and the polluted dirt generated can offgas into loads of o2. 4 petrol gen +16 ethanol distillers + 17 trees grown with farmers touch + 1.2 (=2) fertilizer synthesizers + 0.13333 (=1) natural gas generators + 12 groomed and happy pips +2 groomed and happy dreckos turns into 587kg polluted water and 3200kg polluted dirt per cycle. This is enough to oxygenate 60 dupes. Spoiler: You have a planet with pips and acorns at 40k.
@jivansh4 жыл бұрын
I would not normally trust the polluted dirt, but in this case, francis has plenty of time to set it up for offgasing. I do not think he would go that way tho, because he believes he can build a chimney faster than setting it up, i am a bit disappointed tho, IMHO, water generation thro chimney is too exploity. The chimney should not be able to get you more water than the weight of the fuel.
