Not quite. Although based on USRA Mikado design they were lighter to run on war damaged track. The whistle is an "Atlantic" made by McAvjty foundry in St John New Brunswick to a Canadian National design ( designed by my father who was in the CN engineering department during WWII and was on the committee negotiating with the Free French for railway hardware). Although not as fuel efficient as French designs, they were easy to drive, simple to maintain and very reliable.

Beautiful video in spectacular scenery! What's the origin of that great-sounding North American style 5 chime whistle, so unlike the standard French squeaker? It sure quills nicely, and the engineer has a good style on it, especially at c. 2:46. And what was the second engine of the doubleheader in the first and last sequences?
@ronfisher2-railwaytravelvideos3 жыл бұрын
The second loco is a German Class 01 Pacific. As for the whistle, it's not very French but it certainly sounds nice! I can only presume that the owning society wanted to make it feel more at home. Or perhaps they just like American whistles. Well, what's not to like about American whistles?!

Great to see these engines so well looked after and running in spectacular scenery. I have, though, a question which somebody may be able to answer. Why are they making so much black smoke whilst at the same time it looks as if their safety valves are blowing off. I would have thought that black smoke would be associated with heavy shovelling of coal into the fire, but if there is more than enough pressure why do that? My understanding is that a well managed fire should only give off a light grey smoke even under hard working. Of course that is based on old British standards on Welsh Steam Coal. Perhaps these locos are forced to use something worse.
@NamuTheOrca2 жыл бұрын
Good question! There are several things that could come into play here. First and foremost; the coal quality does have an enormous effect on smoke production. Difference between batches (even from more or less the same area) can be huge: some burn very clean, others practically start smoking the moment you THINK of shoveling some on the fire. Some coal is just, well, crap. And welsh really was the best - stuff of that standard is simply not available in Europe. And sometimes you have to make do with what the company/club you're running at has on offer. Second, and perhaps a minor point, is that the safety valves here are not truly blowing off. They're simmering a bit, and depending on the state of them that can happen quite a ways before the actual blowing off point. Some of our locos start rattling and smoking ever so slightly even at 10-11 bars steam pressure, even though they only start blowing at 16 bars. It's when the steaming amps up and you hear them humming that you've gotta watch out. And third, this is the main line and frankly you gotta do what you gotta do. Now I don't know the machines in this video, but from what I know of our locos (several German types, mostly BR 23 on the main line), they're really working at their peak performance on the main line. It depends a bit on how much weight they're pulling of course, but in general you have to have them fired up right to the max of their working pressure, and with a hot, well-burning fire. Depending on the loco, they can really chew through coal surprisingly quickly at times. And some are very sensitive to "holes" in the fire - they can go down quite suddenly and strongly in pressure, and some locos are very stubborn about getting back to their feet when that happens. With our BR 23's, when they really fall down in pressure, you're kind of done for on the main line.. So even though a loco may be high in pressure, a fireman may see parts of the fire that need tending to BEFORE they come a problem. Or, as mentioned above, the loco simply needs more fuel to stay at that top-of-the-line working pressure. Combine this with the points mentioned above and you can easily get the picture presented in this video.
@NamuTheOrca2 жыл бұрын
Also, I'm just now noticing the French loco is oil fired instead of coal fired lol - and oil tends to burn pretty black at all times ;)

@thomastrautmann98002 жыл бұрын
@Edelweiss11022 жыл бұрын

For complete combustion, you need to keep temps up (insulate the burner area) and thoroughly mix in adequate air. US warships, cans to carriers, burning residual NSFO very seldom showed more than a light haze from the stacks. Of course, on a loco you also need a knowledgeable and attentive fireman.
