$145 of SnapOn vs Tekton vs Icon vs Capri Tools Who Will Flex the Most?

My Snap-on THLX72G started to slip in the “on” tightening position so it was time for a rebuild. I had no intention of testing this ratchet, but since one pawl was on its way out I figured we would put it up against Tekton and Icon and Capri Tools.
While you would typically never take a 1/4” drive past 40-50 ft-lbs we were able to see that these ratchets all performed well. I was surprised to see the ICON ratchet perform so well. In the end, even the Capri Tools and Tekton again performed better than the Snap-On ratchet as far as pure strength. Today there are so many options for getting value compared to buying what is often considered the best. Hopefully, you can purchase or already have what you feel is the best option for you.

I inherited a bunch of old mismatched Craftsman and off-brand tools for my dad. About 2 years ago decided to upgrade my sockets and wrenches with cases for better organization. After doing some research I went exclusively with TEKTON and I absolutely love them. I work on all of my own vehicles, lawn mower, tractor, appliances etc but I'm certainly no mechanic so I was not going after professional quality shop tools however I feel like my TEKTON tools are in fact professional quality.

I’m a lube tech and they are definitely professional quality. I use and abuse their sockets and ratchets every day and the only thing I’ve had fail is a set of mini end cutting pliers where the little spring flew out. Took a picture and 4 days later (it was over Labor Day weekend) I have a new set in my mailbox.

I don't own any Snap-on tools. I've had both had bad experiences with tool men and also don't see the point in paying so much. With that said this proves that a new ratchet will hold a certain amount of torque. But this does not account for the longevity of the tool. As an Automotive Technician I look for what will last. Pushing the ratchet to its failure point doesn't prove that over time the tool will hold up. The way these tools are actually used is very different than a static test.

I have the exact same tekton 1/4" drive set and I love it. The tests that you did is a great example why I always break loose tight bolts using a breaker bar first before using a ratchet. After breaking a few ratchets in my younger years, I started using a breaker bar to bust those tight bolts free first before reaching for my ratchets. The right tool for the right job. Great video.

The Tekton ratchets are typically rated for the same load as their same size breaker bars. I think it is only their 3/4 in breaker bars that exceed the ratchet. All ratchets in this test exceeded the ANSI and ASME standards for 1/4 in ratchets.

25th anniversary as a full time mechanic last june. Bought my 1st 3/8 drive snap on ratchet in 1999. Retired it for the 80 tooth model last year. Not really retired though because it still gets use and works flawlessly.

Snap-On is really not marketed at the “shade tree” mechanic. For someone like you who depends on his tools for his lively hood, I totally understand paying more for higher quality. Snap-On is just way out my price range and I really can’t justify the price for how much I use them. I have ICON ratchets and sockets and they work wonderfully for me. At some point I may purchase an 80 tooth 3/8th Snap-On ratchet just to say I have one and see what the hoopla is all about.

It was a good test but honestly its a 1/4" ratchet so really its not made for high torque applications if you have to pull that hard you would up the drive size

I got ratchet mechanisms from various brands, I do notice a wide variance in the overall quality of it and it's not specific to a brand. Snap-on's ratchet mechanism in the torque wrench i have, works OK but lacks smoothness compared to ratchet mechanism from say gearwrench or something. That is something i noticed over time.

@@Enonymouse_ personally I fell that the snap on ratchets are the best ratchets that I've used, the gear wrench to me is much smoother and better feel then a craftsman or matco but my gear wrench 120xp ratchets i dont feel are as good a product or as smooth as my snap on that being said the ratchets are just about the only thing i really use from snap on anymore I've been buying gear wrench products the past couple years because its cheaper and holds up just as well

Tech In the UK here. We have MAC, Snap On and Tool Truck on our tool rounds. I Used to buy snap on. Used to being the operant phrase. Never liked MAC, our rep is a bit of a dick, his van is never stocked and their tools are equally as overpriced as snap on. However, Our Tool truck dealer is an absolute Legend. I only buy from him now and I’m a total Gearwrench junkie now. I bought 9 ratchets for the same price as 4 off snap on with some change. I absolutely reef on them. More so than the Snap on and still not had any problems (had my snap ons rebuilt like 4 times this year) Morale of the story. These big companies are not your friend and expensive tools don’t make you a better tech.

Well, I dunno. The smart thing is to never use a ratchet that is too weak for the task at hand. If you want to tighten or release a fastener and know (or suspect) the amount of force needed will cause it to fail, you should upsize the ratchet. Go from 1/4" drive up to a 3/8" drive, and 3/8" drive up to 1/2" drive and save yourself the grief. Better yet, use a long-handled standard wrench or a long breaker bar. Neither of these have a ratcheting mechanism that can fail in use.

I purchased all of the comfort grip ICON ratchets and got all three ICON torque wrenches. I got one ICON ratchet and used it on a job. I ended up buying the whole set after that job. Love my ratchets. Why spend triple or more when you don’t have to for the same, if not better, tool. I’m planning on, over time, getting the entire line of ICON Hand tools. Snap-on is good quality (mostly) but they don’t have the advantage anymore. Why buy snap on when the only persons impressed by snap on are other guys who like tools. Whatever your working on, the customer nor the world at large cares what brand tool u have as long as it works. So far, I’ve really put some heavy stress on my ICON tools and they perform flawlessly. Plus, if they ever fail, a quick run to the local HF for a new one is all it takes. No shipping, no waiting, no hassle. Theirs just no reason to pay more anymore.

Although the only issue with the Icon is consistency. They dont all act or feel the same. The first one I bought felt great, but used it once and it locked up. The replacement they gave was much "stiffer" to operate and soynds different. I started checking several on the shelf VERY inconsistent.

Id probably go with the tekton, best warranty, performed nearlu as well as the capri and almost as good as the icon but with the flex head being second only to the snapon, plus it had quick release and its the cheapest, best all round

I'm glad to hear the positive comments on Tekton as I just ordered some and haven't received them yet. The strongest ratchet I've ever owned was a round head Wright 1/2 inch drive. Had rig hands bouncing on it with their feet, and never failed.

For the 3/8s stuff, I have a Tekton quick release unit. I've REALLY leaned on that ratchet with zero issues, and the tooth engagement vs the Mac and Matco units is near identical. Hell of a deal for the money. The only upgrade I can see worth spending the money on would be the SnapOn (there ratchet mechanisms are just unmatched in my opinion..) or the Matco for the locking Flexhead (I have their 1/2 unit and love it).

I've had that same Snap On ratchet for many years, and it's never been rebuilt. They have the best locking mechanism compared to the others. As far as actually fixing cars for a living, it helps when the tool stays in the position you set it in. The other ratchets don't work as well. Plus why did you start off with the Snap On ratchet already damaged when the others were brand new.

danc2581 I really do like the locking mechanism on that Snap-On the best. They have a patent on that so you won’t see another just like it for quite a while. The only ratchet that was slightly less used was the Capri Tools. The Snap-On had one pawl with damage under regular use the other pawl inspected and used for this test was fine. They all hit over 37.5 lb-ft which is the only real mark needed to hit to be within spec for ANSI/ASME👍🏻

I don't understand the one sided reviews on these icon ratchets... I am a heavy equipment mechanic and after seeing tons of reviews about these I decided to give one a try. I got the 3/8 stubby I put a socket on it and spun it by hand and the thing locked up and would not switch directions. I took it apart greased it and tried it again got two ratchets on a hose clamp and it stopped. GARBAGE!!!!! Every other ratchet I have are snap on's and they work day in and day out. Thanks for another one sided review towards the people giving you free stuff.

I have the flex head 1/4 drive long comfort handle snap on ratchet. It’s about 12 inches long and I regularly put 100 ftlbs. On it. Never had a problem. Have tried several brands of ratchets over the years and can’t complain about snap on hand tools. Air tools and cordless is another story though.

You do realize that the quick release ratchet heads are much weaker than solid anvil ratchets. I have icon and snap on and Mac and craftsman. The icon ratchet is good but using it every day it has started to get binding in the head where the snap on is still strong and smooth over years of use. Everything has its purpose

@@yz85919 Be realistic about "Strength" of any ratchet. If you're going to apply that much torque to any wrenching tool, a ratchet is the wrong tool. If vast amounts of torque is required, use a long handle box wrench or non ratcheting socket drive tool or better yet use a high power impact tool. It is absurd to use a hand ratchet as the default wrenching tool as there are FAR better tools for a given wrenching need. And... Do NOT be afraid of using the largest square drive for any given wrenching need. There appears to be a chronic and severe allergy within the Moto wrencher folks to avoid at any cost a square drive size larger than 1/2" square. In any application that needs more than 300ft/lb using a 3/4" or 1" square drive tool would be the FAR better choice. Instead, Moto wrencher folks insist on adding a 100 foot long cheater pipe to the tiny (1/2" or less) square drive tool then scream "Cheap Crap" after the square drive tool explodes. ~Why?~

Snap-On's reliability and dealer network notwithstanding; people tout them as "lifetime tools" which...after re-mortgaging your house and starting on a loan that could get you a nice Truck, are quickly sold off wholesale to the first takers to get the loansharks off your back :P Mid-priced or cheaper $20-40 don't really have any change in value and since you're not dropping your paycheck directly in the tool truck's coffers, you tend to hold onto them longer!

I bought the standard icon ratchet and comfort grip finding both were not lubed properly and skipped. Cleaned and re-lubed they work flawless. Also, if he is going to take the tool to failure it should be done with one constant continuous application of force to the tool/cheater bar instead of repeatedly stressing the tool in a yo-yo fashion and then finally taking it to failure. There is a lot of room for improvement in his testing methods.

I went with the Tekton non quick release swivel head ratchets. 1/4",3/8",1/2"drives. I'm really picky about ergonomics and the lowest profile heads with no protruding mechanisms. Having complete control of the socket while in tight spaces is very important. Most inexpensive ratchets are bulky and have alot of resistance when working on finger tight fasteners. This makes them useless in tight spaces when you can't keep the fastener moving in the right direction. You end up using some form of thread sealer to create enough resistance to keep the fastener from spinning back the wrong direction.

I'd really like to see the Wright "Double Pawl" ratchets put up against the Snap-On and/or Tekton, Along with Proto, MAC, and Cornwell. A Few mentioned Gedore as well and i know my dad had some of their wrenches so I think that would be a good contest. you could possibly throw in a Boxo ratchet and/or a Titan as I believe these should be fairly similar to the Tekton or Icon.

All you have to do with icon is drive over to your local harbor freight and get a new one. If the tool truck comes on Monday and you break a ratchet in Tuesday you’ll be out a week. Icon you’ll be up and running after a lunch run.

Been working on cars and trucks for over 25 year's never needed a flex head or any high end ratchets for anything. I prefer my great neck and craftsman tools because they have lifetime warranty and are easy to get. Although I've only had to replace the 3/8" drive craftsman one time when the handle snapped in half while working on some brakes. I was surprised that the handle broke before the driver especially after the abuse I put it through. I only have a regular 1/4" drive snap on with a short handle and that was actually given to me.

I stick with the icon brand tools just because if they do break I can just walk to the harbor freight next to my house and get it replaced. I have used others and liked them a little more but the convenience of being able to grab a new one if it breaks instead of having to wait to get a new one in the mail is the seller for me.

@@jamesstephenson2346 Yep, I don't know who 'owes' anything to snap-on. I pay in cash for my tools and have had them for years, the snap-on stuff I do own has been good to me. I have an impact gun made by snap-on from the 90's that has been rebuilt numerous times, it used to belong to the auto-shop of a telecom formerly known as GTE. They maintained all their own trucks in-house. I own a chicago-pneumatic gun i like better but the old stand-by is always there.

That tekton flex head with the detent is a steal at $20. Tekton should put a nice grip on that handle, I'd pay extra for that. Who actually manufacturers tekton?

I have not picked up the ICON ratchets yet, but I do have the 25" breaker bar. When.. err, if my Kobalt ratchets end up failing, I may pick up the ICON ones. I do have the SAE/Metric deep sockets from ICON, which work as intended. :)

I know when i bought my extra long handle 1/4 snap on ratchet it was advertised as withstanding 100ft lbs. I thought to my self. " i could torque log nuts with this baby!" Haha. Its a non quick release. That weakens ratchets because there is a hole and detent ball. Which makes the drive not a solid piece of metal. But end of the day tool truck tools are nice. But generally not worth the cost. Id say certain tools yes. You need snap on or such. Like for instance an o2 sensor socket. Here up north they get very stuck. And cheap ones just flex and round things off. But as a mechanic myself. Id say 1/10 of my tools are truck brands. And i do just fine...

Have a look at the mechpro ratchets, I bought a set with sockets as I broke my ABW ratchet and I’m really impressed with the quality for the price. I’ve really abused the whole set and it all holds up, apart from the unis which have all broken

I am a snap on snob however there are many other tool companies offering quality tools at lower prices. I do buy snap on tools when i get a good deal on Ebay. But have been very impressed with some of the ICON tools. A while back wanted 6 point wrenches standard and metric none were made in icon or tekton snap on and sk were to much money for me being on a limited income i ended up buying a set of gearwrench and i will say not bad.

Snap-On is iconic on a few tools - their ratcheting screwdrivers are the industry leader by far. They also make some nice non-standard tools that can't be found elsewhere. That said, except for a handful of Snap-On tools, I have never seen the value in their quality or pricing. The results noted in this video are pretty common with Snap-On; they usually perform in the middle of the road. Yes, they have a lifetime warranty, but so do most reputable tool makers. When I hire new aircraft mechanics, I always discourage them from buying Snap-On and especially to never open an account with the truck.

The really interesting thing with these sort of tests is how far Asian made and particularly Taiwanese tools have come. Even a modest ratchet will take more than you can give it by hand.

My 88 tooth 3/8 drive Snap on cost me 138. But it's worth it. Nice smooth action. A rachet is used to remove nut or bolt. Use a pull handle to break shit loose.

The thing I absolutely LOVE about TEKTON tools is their sets don't skip any sizes! Not sure about ICON but most of the Pittsburgh sets at HFT skip sizes so you have to buy the SAE & Metric sets.

I can't afford Snap-On, but I think it's fair to say they have become the benchmark to compare other tools against. I'm just glad other manufacturers offer a competitive product at a lower price point for us weekend home mechanics. If I were using 8 hours a day for 5 days a week, I'd probably invest in the Snap-On for peace of mind alone as they have proven long-standing reliability.

Nobody can afford Snap On, its not a good value at all considering most other brands are basically the same for much much less cash. Snap On got their name back in the day when most other tools actually were pretty bad, now everything is basically the same. Don't be fooled by the name.

i have been watching the ICON brand and so far I like what I see. What I wish you would add is the warranty of them. They are warrantied to the original owner only? What about snap-on? Also how much trouble to return the ICON? Do they have replacements in stock at HB or is it warrantied through ICON. If you needed the tool to finish the job, could you get it replaced immediately? The Tekton seems easy enough to replace immediately through their website without a receipt?

I own mostly snap on but I picked up a set of icon sockets and a wrench. Icon wrench was pretty good but I returned the sockets. Wrench was worth the money but sockets were junk. Very soft metal and chrome was damaged after just a few uses.

I had a Snap on 3/8 hand ratchet years ago that the reversing lever kept falling off. I would give it to the tool truck guy to fix and he would just tighten the screw down holding it on. In other words did nothing to fix it because it would keep doing it, one day even falling off without me noticing it. Luckily I found it on the floor. It isn't the best ratchet, there are better ones out there. I won't even get going on the test light I bought from him that lasted less than a year before the clamp end kept coming apart.

There are torque ratings for each ratchet if you need a lot of torque you would up the drive size 1/4" is not made to be used that way thats like trying to take off tractor lug nuts with a 1/2" ratchet. I buy snap-on for the fine teeth and smooth application but i also have from 1/4" up to 1"

Tekton doesn't honor their warranty, even a defective out of the box ratchet, Dave at tekton says it needs to break in, after 35 years in the trade I never needed to break in a ratchet so it would actually "ratchet" instead of locking up and then slipping

Pat H I don’t have my tekton stuff other than their mini screwdriver set the work well but I have many different brands including snap on and really people who buy snap on because they “are the best” are really only wasting their money I have tools that should have failed years ago and they just won’t die for example harbor freight die grinders Pittsburgh pro ratchets some craftsman USA stuff from the 80’s I could go all day long point is all 4 of the ratchets they broke today in this video performed very similar and there are a ton of young mechanics entering the industry and they will need to maximize their dollars as this gentleman stated you can buy an entire 1/4 inch master set with 3 ratchets for the price of one snap on ratchet it’s just stupid to spend that kind of money on all snap on when there are many other options I do have about 8 of the snap on 14.4 power tools and love them but I’m not spending 700+ dollars for a set of wrenches or one set of 1/2 drive sockets that is just dumb

Project Farm just put up a video showing side cutter pliers that cost 1/3 of what Snap Ons cost and outperforming them, by far. It’s a common trend. Not bashing Snap On, just becoming aware that NHRA drag racing and Nascar teams are expensive. Being more expensive does not mean better, just means more expensive.

If I am using a flex head ratchet I prefer a locking head. I like the lock on Snap On but the Tekton with the indent is almost as good. Capri's warranty is no where near as good as any of the other three. Normal wear and tear is not covered, you must be the original purchaser and must have your receipt. Then you mail it back then wait for your replacement. Personally I do not want to deal with mailing a wrench, socket or ??? Plus lifetime isn't available on alot of their tools. Which is ashame, they have some good tools. Their impact sockets are excellent for the money according to many reviews. That's where Tekton shines, take a picture, fill out a quick form and hit send. A few days later you have a new tool at your door, never leave the house.
