♥️ Knoxville! Such a beautiful venue! Knoxville holds a special place in my heart, it’s was my mothers home town! My grandmother used to play the organ and piano for silent films back in the day and she’d put my mother up to sing and entertain the audience during breaks. Somehow they were put on tour and ended up settling in Los Angeles when my mother was around 9, and this is where she finally met my dad and so it goes! I don’t think they would have had silent movies there at this venue but I wouldn’t know. Wish I knew more about those old theaters where they were. Thank you so very much for this tour!

The Tennessee Theater reminded me of a 1958 Cadillac Coupe de Ville with fins and chrome as seen next to a 1958 Porsche 550 RS Spyder. Each has their place and appreciation as a tribute to craftsmanship and principles of design, but is is when the lights dim, it will be the music that we have come to enjoy that will leave a smile as we go on our way. I am finding the walks though the venue with all the wandering off the main path accompanied by narrative informative. The view today of the men’s lavatory with the rows of urinals and sinks to wash hands all in such a small area was a pre covid19 design. The walk around the theater was the most enjoyable part for me. Walking around the old grave markers is what I might choose to do as well. Leland you are a remarkable piece of performing art. Wether it is music, sculpture, art, gardening, or video documenting with a quarter million visitors in-tow, it is all a remarkable piece (peace) of work.

Cathedral feel to this, elegant, built for kings and rock stars. The fanciest "Restroom" sign I have ever seen. Although super beautiful and very elegant, I kinda like the older, rougher looking and feeling venues, love seeing the graffiti and signatures of all the previous performers in the bowels of the basements and backstages. The cemetary was different, unexpected, but very cool. Thanks for another great vid. Loved the interview with Rick, had a lot of good deep belly laughs. Love both you guys. Old cemeteries like the one you see here display the conditions from industrialization. Many old marble headstones dissolve due to acid rain that grows from pollutants emitted during the industrial era before emission controls were imposed. There is a cemetery near me that evidences the same conditions among its 100+-year-old headstones. The oldest ones are nearly impossible to read. Newer grave markers are made from granite and do not exhibit the degraded appearance as their marble counterparts.

Knoxville’s First Presbyterian Church, the city’s first church, was organized in 1792 and is still located on its original site. James White, Knoxville’s founder and a devout Presbyterian, came from North Carolina to the Fork of the River, where the Holston and French Broad Rivers meet to form the Tennessee River. He later moved downriver and settled near First Creek. He built a fort and a mill and planted his garden - for turnips in the fall and corn in the spring. When he asked his son-in-law, Charles McClung, to lay out a town, part of White’s instructions were “to reserve my turnip patch for a church and a burying ground.”
@Mark_Brooks
@Mark_Brooks Жыл бұрын
In 1791 surveyor Charles McClung staked out 16 blocks containing 64 half-acre lots that would become the frontier town of Knoxville. An additional survey in 1795 established 56 more lots, with two of the new lots designated as the site for a graveyard. By 1812 this acre of land also became the location of First Presbyterian Church. Although 1800 is the earliest death date inscribed on a tombstone in the cemetery, the site may have been used by the pioneers as a community burying ground as early as 1786 when James White’s fort was built. Among those buried in the church graveyard are James White, the founder of Knoxville; Rev. Samuel Carrick, our first minister; Hugh Lawson White, a candidate for U.S. President in 1836; territorial governor William Blount; and Col. John Williams, a member of Congress. The graveyard is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The graveyard at First Presbyterian Church was used to inter the citizens of Knoxville for 79 years. The oldest grave is that of territorial governor William Blount who died March 21, 1800. Although an 1857 city ordnance prohibited further burials, the last interment in the graveyard was for James Bell who died April 29, 1879.

The magnificent Tennessee Theatre first opened its doors on October 1, 1928 and was hailed as “the South’s most beautiful theatre.” When the first patrons stepped inside downtown’s “movie palace” to see their favorite stars on the silver screen, they paid only 40 cents for matinees and 60 cents for evening shows (children paid only 10 and 15 cents). Designed by Chicago architects Graven & Mayger, the Theatre has a Spanish-Moorish style interior that incorporates elements from all parts of the world: Czechoslovakian crystals in the French-style chandeliers, Italian terrazzo flooring in the Grand Lobby, and Asian influences in the carpet and drapery patterns. It was one of the first public places in Knoxville to have air-conditioning.
@Mark_Brooks
@Mark_Brooks Жыл бұрын
Its 95-year history includes highs and lows, from when movies reigned as the chosen form of entertainment to the decline and uncertain future of downtown. Periodic closings in the late 1970s gave way to glimpses of a brighter outlook when the Theatre was purchased in 1981 by James A. Dick. The Theatre then began its gradual shift in programming from a single-screen movie theater to a multi-use performing arts venue, which prolonged its existence but exaggerated its many shortcomings. In 1996, the Historic Tennessee Theatre Foundation, a non-profit organization, was founded with the purpose of preserving, maintaining, and operating the Theatre. The Foundation's Board of Directors was responsible for overseeing and raising funds for restoration and renovation of the building, which began in June, 2003. The former movie palace reopened on January 15, 2005 as a world-class performing arts center-the result of a $25.5 million renovation and restoration project funded through public and private donations.

Listed in the National Register of Historic Places and honored as the Official State Theatre of Tennessee, today's Tennessee Theatre has something for everyone: classical music, vintage films, dance, Broadway, and stellar performances by today's hottest musicians and yesterday's favorites. Local arts organizations such as the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra and Knoxville Opera use the Tennessee Theatre throughout the year. The Tennessee Theatre has a full-time operations staff of 21, hundreds of part-time staff, and uses Knoxville-based employees of Live Nation for booking and marketing its concerts and Broadway productions.

Wow this place looks like something the Vanderbilts would have commissioned, pure opulence. I guess there'll be no Black Flag or Circle Jerks shows there anytime ever!. Have a great show.

Russ has a fisheye mirror attached to his set. I've never seen that before. I'm guessing he has to look in too many directions at once. When you interview Russ, ask him about it.

not many old movie houses looked like that. Must have been a very important theatre to the city. In Toronto we had the Eglington which was a Famous Players theatre. It is now offices, what a loss.

Stunning would fall far short ! Contrast that with a local hall . The movie theater was abandoned and left to rot for years . The roof leaked and destroyed the interior . It was built in 1927 . They gutted the building . The " new look " is exposed brick walls , exposed corrugated steel roof and exposed mechanicals in the ceiling . Basically on THE CHEAP ! At least the sound is reasonable .

Magnificent old theater from top to bottom. Are there other band members who enjoy checking out the venue? We saw Amy and Mace touring the Ryman, but, yeah, it's the Ryman. Rick posted your interview. Thanks ❤👍❤👍
