I am a truck driver so I fully understand about having to secure my trailer from theft. And yes, brute force (cutting the lock off) is by far the most common way that trailers are broken into.

Well, that looks like a pretty good result for me. Took LPL some time to pick open, and cutting can be solved with a hardened steel version. And as always, real life situations might take very longer. It's the best feedback a product with potential could ask for.

Agreed. This is about the level of protection I have on my enclosed trailer. With a plastic roof vent and a RV style side side door, there isn't much use in beefing up the hasp much more in my case. Most of these transit vans also have front windows, may or may not have a passthrough, and a sliding side door for removing equipment. Sadly I have fixed a bunch of vans where the door skin was just opened like a soup can with a battery powered nibbler. Steel or aluminum, if you know where to cut it is about like the time in the video here. Some of the electric latches are a little better because you can't just pull on rods to open everything.

Actually saw the inventor and founder speak several years ago while I was in college. His daughter was in the class and she got something worked out for him to come speak, as the class was about entrepreneurship. He said that he was working out the patent for it, and it has been at least 5 years since that talk he gave. This leads me to believe that this lock may be one of the first models, if not the first. Another thing, the master lock model you showed was a direct response to seeing this lock. As I recall, he tried to sell to master but they acted like they were going to screw him on the deal, so he lawyered up and hurried along the patent as best he could to continue pursuing this himself. The main vulnerability you mentioned was actually something he brought up. At the time, he said of the fairly high number of locks he sold (I don’t recall the number) that only one had been breached like that, and he said the owner of the van even admitted that he’d left the van somewhere he shouldn’t. Cool to see this come up all these years later!

Gotta say, this is not my first encounter with these locks. I do have some history with them. Driving home from college, I used to see a van with one equipped on the back door every day for about a week. And from the next car back, the logo looks like it reads SUCK LOCK. Both the picking and sawing attacks would be considerably more difficult "in the wild". With these types of security devices, you 99% of the time you only have to have better security than the lower hanging fruit in the area.

I read a couple of comments where it was said that with the lock installed on the van, it would be more difficult to cut through the hasp, it sounds like some do not realize that most hacksaw blades can be rotated 90 degrees to the handle, that means the handle would be at a 90 degree angle away from the door, the pin or wingnut on some might still rub against the door but I don't think thief's are too concerned about scratching the paint.

That's true, but it's also awkward and more difficult to apply pressure on the blade and easier to snag or get twisted. In any case it's going to be more difficult installed than in the comfort of your workshop in a vice.

@@DragNetJoe Not at all, I have worked in building maintenance and construction for over 35 years and rotating the blade does not make the saw more difficult to use, you can still put as much pressure on the blade and maybe even more because you have a tendency to use both your hands when the blade is rotated (holding the handle with your dominate hand and holding the end of the saw frame with your other. All that being said, you are correct that it would be easier in a shop but its still not difficult at all on the vehicle.

They do serve the purpose though of taking extra timer to open, so are going to make the thief look for another vehicle first. Yes a hardened plate, or one made out of a tougher steel, or with a spot welded in extra high tensile plate, to deter the cutting, will still be a benefit. Easy enough to add in to the existing lock as well, just needs a suitable piece of high strength tough steel, wiyth the hole punched in it, and a spot welder to attach it to the existing bracket. After all the steel of the vehicle is the softer option, all you need is to make the staple 5 minute resistant, as if they want in they can bring along a can opener, or a nibbler, and simply cut out the existing steelwork anyway, or a cut off disk and angle grinder to do the same.

Same goes for Door locks. Youre looking at roughly Three Minutes average time. Five minutes is of course even better. In highly frequented areas, thieves/robbers always go for the quickest and sneakiest option.

Took roughly a minute with a specialised picking tool, that's pretty good. The fix for the hasp issue is pretty simple - hardened steel plate. Probably wouldn't add much to the overall price of the poduct. A really well thought out product. The reality is thieves would probably steal the vehicle and go at it at their leisure. But that's not the slicklocks fault

I use slick locks. I've keyed mine up to offer pick resistance and made sure a comb pick will not work. As shown, anything is pick-able with skill. My hope is that it will deter a burglar long enough to make them move on to something else.

They should make the hasps more custom-shaped to the van and extend out to the outer edges of the puck, and wedging outwards into the newly convex backside of the puck, making the hasp look like a flattened pyramid if you viewed it from the top or bottom.

Thank you for making me believe in myself to actually pick a lock in dire need. I was able do get an (old) Abus-lock open. Then I found an old key that had no bidding lower than the real key and was able to produce a useable key after the original key that was broken. Before this, I only had luck with a very simple training lock, and yet, after about an hour of fiddling, I could feed the neighbour's cat again... :D (and yes, I informed him about the mishap, and he agreed to my approach beforehand).

The most important part to mention about said vulnerability is that it makes a ton of noise cutting through the steel, drawing attention to the thief. There have also been cases of a thief attempting to twist off the lock and once doing so, the brackets twisted together re-securing the doors. Would also love to see a video on their sliding door model as that is what most vans on the market are!

Thieves are not afraid of a little noise, they often use angle grinders and saws alls to do their dirty work and those are MUCH louder And you are wildly overestimating the real world noise of a hack saw based on how it sounds with a mic pointed right at it in an enclosed room

These hack saws are not very noisy. This was done in a garage which reflects noise and a microphone pointed directly at it. Outside you hardly hear them even a couple of meters away, nature sounds or city sounds especially will drown it out easily. Also, it takes some time to notice unusual noise and this is so fast, that you probably overhear it even if you could physically notice it.

Had a work van with these hasps, thieves were successful at breaking/ cutting one side of the hasp. Banged in the sheet metal pushing the puck lock back and forth. Also tried torching the door too. They must have been scared off before they could get the factory lock defeated. The cab of the van was also broken into (thanks automakers with your genius engineering for putting locks inside plastic handle assemblies, real secure there, definitely toddler proof😁). Portable power tools make things easier than the should be.

Adding some hardened pins to the hasp that mate into the lock body would both make sawing and grinding a lot harder and might also prevent the lock from rattling and maybe wearing the hasp enough that the lock hits the van's paint job.

I've had these locks on my work Transit 150 since 2016 and LOVE them. They stop the smash and grab. The door jiggler looking for a quick score probably isn't carrying a hack saw. Its the guy with a spark plug who can take out a window with ease. Speaking of windows my van has window grates also and having installed them myself, they wouldn't be that hard to pry out. Just trying to slow the scoundrels' down.

With some hacksaws, you can rotate the blade 45 or 90 degrees from the frame. You could also use the blade without the handle, or even use a cable saw or a coping saw. Those would be slower, but not that slow. I think the point is, sawing this lock is not all that hard.

Nothing is perfect, even guarded doors with RFID readers and biometrics. LPL did a collab with penetration testers a few years back and it's stupid easy to get into even "high security" areas. At the end of the day, it's all theatre to make bad guys look for an easier target.

I've seen that kind of lock on a storage pod that has a latch system with a recess for the lock. There's no getting a saw behind it. You get access to the side of the lock with the keyhole and the front. I've often wondered how you'd get into it.

In my city there's a rash of catalytic converters being stolen. Thieves roll up at 2am, on city streets with dozens of residential houses lining both sides WITH CUTTING POWER TOOLS. It takes 2-3 minutes per theft. No one cares.... no one calls the police, no one does anything. Happened literally outside my window at 3am. The cutting woke me up and I looked outside to see. I did call the police, after an exasperated sigh from the 911 operator, a care was dispatched. The cop did a drive by w 35 minutes later...... You drastically underestimate how little people care when they hear 60 seconds of sawing.

I truly enjoy watching LPL's videos. Until now I have not commented on the control environment the various locks are picked. Some locks I would imagine would be more difficult to pick under field conditions, but still vulnerable to picking. To cut the hasp as demonstrated in this video in my opinion would be very difficult if done had the lock been installed against a flat surface such as a rear door of a van it was intended. Still enjoy LPL's videos and will continue to watch.

Hacksaws often have rotatable blades, enabling fairly easy assault even against a flat surface, and most burglars will be using something like a Sawzall, which will have an even easier time of it

That wasn't the point of the video. The lishi demonstrated how tough the lock was to pick. Those who watch this channel will appreciate some of the security in the pins. The video was about how bad the flaw was in comparison. If a real thief would take 20 mins picking that lock or more like a couple hours, 18secs with a hacksaw would be a real letdown, right?

I'm going to call a real world vs. bench inconsistency on this. A thief hacksawing these on an actual van would have the saw and their knuckles against the plane of the van door, not out in the air as LPL did. Not that I don't want to see these hardened, but in the real world with a van also in the way sawing is going to be significantly more difficult (keeping in mind that 3x as long is still under a minute). Now we just need to wait until covert instruments makes a 90º handle hacksaw rig and it's sold out forever, right?

A cordless sawzall is already the tool of choice for thieves with a long flexible blade perfectly suited for such real world plane surfaces.

@@ButterfatFarms Rotating the blade on a standard hacksaw leaves two tips extending behind the blade. A cheap plastic handle bolted to the end of a disposable hardened blade lets you move the blade at will. Another common tool will protect the thief's knuckles.

I have grade 125 Chain around the seat bases in my van with a half inch thick cargo ring thru a slot in the door panel. Can only open the front doors 4 inches. The rear doors have a ratchet strap holding them closed. The slider has a lock thru the top rail. The slider wont open more than a quarter inch. There is a morse cable operated battery disconnect switch and a kill switch on the fuel pump relay coil ground wire. I have about 20 grand worth of tools in my van. Parked every night on the streets of los angeles. I don't even worry about it. It was so bad before I carried a spare steering column to swap in when they destroyed the ignition housing.

Would it be possible to bypass the spinning case by sliding a thin metal sheet between the lock and the housing (like a shim), so that the generated friction locks the mechanism?

If you are planning to rip the lock off the door by brute force, a shim isn't going to generate enough friction to allow you to tear metal...

We got these on a lot of our cargo vans at work, in our case, they are there to thwart the smash and grabs. Last time we had a bunch of vehicles broken into overnight, they smashed out a drivers or passenger window and hit the power lock button to unlock the vans, and instant access to the cargo area, so this slicklock is there to make them work to gain access to the back. Not that it would stop them if thats their plan... they stole 30 cat converters over the previous christmas holiday break, so making noise isn't something they are afraid of doing. Zinging a battery grinder through the slicklock hasp would be like butter in comparison.

@@clion520 easly fixed by bending the hacksaw blade into an L and holding onto the blade to cut. Adds mabey 10 sec to cutting it and works great for all flush cutting needs.

a fluke normally refers to a quick open. This one took 66 seconds. You know any lock that takes LPL more than 60 seconds is good pick-resistance to an average joe.

I wouldn't even bother with the install units and i'd just "massage" the metal so i can install hardened steel bars, considering the extra space that the lock affords you. I've done this in the past with puck locks and it's the easiest method to piss off a burgo. They'll dull blades upon blades until they make it work. Also, the metal is not removed from the van, just slightly bent, easily fixed with a hammer and dolly and a smidge of bondo.

A dozen work vans outfitted with Slick locks on the side and back doors resulted in no access by two thieves and other thieves accessing other company’s vehicles instead of ours over the past 7 years. I’d say these locks have served their purpose well protecting $100k worth of equipment. Easy for garage department to install and maintain. This product is well worth it.

I have two Slick Locks on a Ford E body van (AKA) Econoline. I'm fairly certain that the hasps could be sawn in just the manner you've shown. As most people will acknowledge, locks are just a way to keep honest people honest. Given enough time and equipment, no lock will resist. The point of a lock is to discourage folks or to render the time needed for removing the lock too risky.

Thanks again LPL! My thought was what if you made a plug with a key blank to locate it, the plug will jam the body and the spinner so you can get leverage for a pipe wrench. The plug would also act as a sear so the wrench jaws don’t just munt the spinner case. Quieter than a hacksaw but admittedly a specialist approach. Just my immediate thoughts 😁

A trick to stop the hacksaws I saw someone using for a lock like this securing a door was to add a rubber or plastic washer looking thing or even some string/ wire to fill the gap. It doesn't completely remove the vulnerability but if you have ever tried hacksawing a piece or rubber or a ball of twine without pinning it in place, it isn't easy.

There is no space for rubber washer. And you will not wrap and unwrap the wire around every time you open and close the lock . 20 times a day.

I agree about not wanting to wrap wire or twine 20 times a day but if that is the case you are not leaving the van for more than half an hour during your 10 hour day. These locks are usually used for people who do long van journeys or who need to leave the van overnight for some reason (like small moving/ storage companies etc.) so you would only need to lock it once every 2-3 days. I will clarify it wasn't actually a washer just something that kinda looked like one
