That is one of the most beautiful theaters I've ever seen.

One of my best concert experiences ever was here on June 6, 1986 for Metallica. My friend and I had very high balcony seats but before they took the stage we noticed there were a couple of seats in the first row of the balcony so we went down and sat in them. After the 15th song (second encore) we were still in those seats. I had already been to numerous concerts, mostly metal, which were mainly general admission on the floor for me which I preferred because I loved being in the middle of the action and as close to the stage as I could be. But, sitting in a balcony first row seat for the duration was a welcomed "relaxing" experience even for a metal show. Plus we got to meet the band in the alley afterwards. Still have pictures!

This theater was a part of my childhood in the 60s. My family lived in California but always took school holiday trips to my dad's hometown of San Antonio. I remember seeing many movies here. In 2017, I went back as an adult to see Lindsey Buckingham and Christne McVie perform and it all came back to me. Thank you for sharing Leland.

Very majestic, feels so 1920's, strange to see the old architechture, with modern metal detectors scatterd about, gave me a bit of sad feeling. Love the pillars and spiral columns, woodwork, so colorful. This reminds of an old video game I used to play, called Bioshock, I swear they had inspiration for their background from this Theater. With the ceiling and the facade Its like the audience is sitting on a stage, not watching the show, but are a part of the show. This is my favorite venue so far, it gave me an ethereal feeling. Thank you Leland for another very cool video.✌🤍

Hi, I decided to finally pay a comment after 3 years of watching your wonderful videos. Thank you so much for sharing all of this with us. The recent ones have been esp interesting because (even though he doesn't appear to be touring with you guys at the moment) I thought I'd share that I went to high school with Ray Herndon! And our mothers took turns taking us to our orthodontist appts, we were in the marching band together and many classes. Also my grandmother lived and my mother and uncle grew up rt by where you live!! Small world!! It would be SUCH an honor to meet you someday. Although I doubt that will happen. I don't even know if your read these. I hope you do. Take care and stay safe!! Btw, I am so sorry that I missed your at red rocks this year. I live in Denver now and used to be one of the paramedics that did the medical stuff for red rocks. Good times and what a great experience!! Your video of backstage this year was wonderful! Maybe someday I'll have the honor to shake your hand!!

I had the worst case of food poisoning I've ever had in San Antonio back in the late 80s. The EMT folks asked me if I'd ever had Mexican food before. "Yes", I said. "Ever had our Mexican food?" 24 hours of misery in the hotel next to the Alamo. But San Antonio was great. I've been there three times and loved it. Terrific tour of the Majestic. A concert in a venue like this is more than a concert, it's an event.

My uncle was manager of all Interstate Theaters across Texas. Because of this, I got a job at one of the theaters just north of downtown. During our lunch breaks, we'd get on a bus and go down to the Majestic. It wasn't open but we were allowed inside. It was so wonderful being there during the day when no one was around. When I was a little girl, my grandmother would often take me to the Majestic. I was so confused by the sky painted on the ceiling. HAHA! But it was always such a treat being there.

Each of these theaters have their own resonance, some emphasize wealth and status while others the workmanship and craft as its note. The Majestic Theater appears to do both. The lighting of theater does a wonderful job of showcasing the detailed work and design of the theater. The video being shot here with no auxiliary lighting show the very good blending of light with form. The finding of those narrow hall ways and stairs with railing folding into shadows and then into bright color could be a scene from a Fellini, Wells, or Hitchcock film; Leland always finds locations for great scene locations. The grandeur does seem dissipate by becoming overwhelming and borders on becoming a critique of indulgence which might even be a sample of a prevalent American era. That closing comment about Phil Collins is a great tribute to a passion he had to delve into a subject and its fulfillment. But I am no final judge, I am the person who feels most comfortable at a coffeehouse with conversation or a coffee bar with live music in cozy small setting. ✘

Majestic Theatre Located in the heart of downtown San Antonio, Texas, the Majestic Theatre was built in 1929 and was designed in a Spanish Mediterranean style by John Eberson for Karl Hoblitzelle's Interstate Theatres. The Majestic was intended to be the most modern building in South Texas and was the first in the state to be totally air-conditioned. It remains one of the finest examples of atmospheric theatres ever built, receiving National Historic Landmark status in 1993. The Majestic Theatre is an example of Ambassador Theatre Group's ability to work within public, private partnerships - in this case the City of San Antonio as owner of the theatre, and Las Casas Foundation, a local non-profit organization, in a successful effort to turn the historic movie theatre into a landmark, modern performing arts facility. During the 1980s and 90s, $9 million renovation and stage expansion costs were raised by Las Casas Foundation, with substantial investments from the City of San Antonio and local philanthropies.

Las Casas Foundation Founded in 1988 by local philanthropist, Joci Straus, as part of the effort behind the restoration of San Antonio’s historic Majestic and Empire Theatres. Las Casas Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the development of the performing arts through education, scholarships and the restoration and preservation of historic theatres Spanish for “the houses,” the Foundation’s name reflects San Antonio’s cultural diversity and originated from the idea of the venues serving as houses for the performing arts.

Charline McCombs Empire Theatre The Charline McCombs Empire Theatre was built in 1914 on the site of the former Rische's Opera House in downtown San Antonio, Texas. Designed in the style of a European palazzo by architects Mauran, Russell & Crow of St. Louis, the Empire operated as a vaudeville house and then a motion picture theatre. The Empire's grandeur was prematurely concealed by inappropriate repairs due to extensive flood damage in 1921. After a long, slow decline, the vaudeville house, turned B-run movie theatre, closed its doors in 1978. Redeveloped as part of the neighboring Majestic Theatre project, fundraising efforts by Las Casas Foundation, a local non-profit organization, restored the forgotten luster of the interior of the theatre, and the venue reopened as the Charline McCombs Empire Theatre in 1998 after $5 million in renovations. The Empire is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
