A fixed (non rotating) cone would reduce rotating mass and offer performance improvement. Boundary layer effect will cause the air to rotate at the surface of the cone robbing energy from the blades (spoons). Think jet engines .. .

I see what you are getting at, and it probably would, but I also imagine if there was an outer cone [not moving] to funnel a larger area of air into the blades could increase the amount of air and in turn the output.

You can twist the cone, creating micro blades on it as a orange squeezer, adding efficiency to the construction. I think some folds on the sheet brings you the result.

Also, an update on the wind turbine with a bowl rather than a cone. I found what I believe is a very good shape for the cone replacement. The bottom half of an plastic easter egg. The giant hollow eggs that pop apart so you can fill them with stuffed animals, toys, candy, ect. It appears to be very well shaped for this application. It's not too pointed nor too shallow, yet also not a perfect half sphere(a full half sphere would cause crosswinds to not flow across properly). Two of those and you can make a back to back turbine for almost full wind range. Cheap and maybe even free if you know someone that has kids around easter time. Just a thought.

@@KhalidABDxB In the US and some other places there are giant plastic eggs that you can buy that are filled with toys and candy. To use that as your center of turbine would work very well. Since the cone that they are made of is not spherical, due to fluid dynamics laws would make air flowing across it behave differently than with a sphere half. As the air works it's way across the conical shape it would pick up speed and force it's way across the blades being a possible improvement over other turbine designs. Thank you and stay curious, questioning everything is how new things are developed.

Love this. Having this as a ducted fan would create a further increase wind speed over the spoons. also having the ducting around the spoons extend beyond the spoons a reasonable distance with a cone on the back would ease drag behind the blades and also improve negative presure behind the blade to help pull air through the blades. I reckon this set up would work well as small sale hydro with low head water if housed inside a pip

I think if you ducted more wind in using a large cowling on the outside of the turbine to duct even more wind in, perhaps we could best the Betz limit? Then again, that might be cheeting. :)

@@ThinkingandTinkering Your always ahead of the game, answering my questions before I ask. Lol 25% increase! Nice 👍. I think it was GE who made a sort of thin shroud and built the generator into the outer shroud allowing greater power output at lower wind speeds for smaller scale turbines.

@@ThinkingandTinkering What would produce more power, wind blowing perpendicular to the spoons or coming in at an angle? Like when you test with the hair dryer and change the angle of the hair dryer. If it makes more power when the wind hits the spoons at an angle, then would designing the shroud or cone or whatever to redirect the wind to hit the spoons at the optimal angle work?

@@AORD72 the best possible efficiency is 59% for a wind turbine. He got 55% efficiency for his turbine, which is 93% of the best possible efficiency. Watch the video again carefully before you start calling people names.

@@AORD72 wind from the fan gets dispersed. Energy is also lost as mechanical inefficiency in the fan. You can't just take the fan's power consumption and use it like that

Found this video interesing and believe that it can be improved on quite easily. By introducing the cone you have increased the efficiency by directing the air towards the spoons, however you are also introducing a drag coefficient by having the cone also rotating on the axis being attached to the spoons. I say this because when the pressure of the air hits the cone the rotational surface friction is trying to change the direction of the air flow perpendicular to the direction of travel. (The same surface friction caused by air pressure that is used to power the tesla turbine in an air powered version). In this design I would still adopt a cone to direct the air for greater air pressure on the spoons, but I would have the cone stationary and not attached to the spoons. Then I would aso add some short vanes to the edge of the cone to help guide the air into the spoon faces again to improve efficiency. Another loss is introduced by the added weight of the turbine by attaching the cone as you are also having the use available energy to rotate this mass. The increased weight will also add friction to the bearings. Now, combining this design with the low friction magnetic bearing you shared would also greatly improve efficiency in the system. This would then allow a greater amount of the air pressure applied to the spoons to be utilised and converted into usable electrical energy The only negative impacts in the system would then be the air friction on the spoons and the back emf caused when the magnets are passing through the coils. As we are minimising any losses that are found elsewhere in the system. This is from what I can imagine is happening in this system. I hope this is all something to consider if you fancy doing an upgrade video on this subject. 😎 👍 Your thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

I do fancy doing an upgrade on this mate based on what you have said - I think you make very good points - I don't agree with the magnetic bearings they are tricky and can be expensive but the rest I think is awesome thinking

Something else I would do is (when using a static cone) is to add paper/cardboard/plastic face plates to the spoons handles as internal turbulence will also introduce drag into the system. Then also if possible (yes I know I'm making a lot of work - sorry) add, a say 2", ring of card behind the spoons (Again not attached to the spoons) that is of same diameter as your cone. Hopefully this will help reduce drag by turbulence caused behind the system (maybe longer if needed). Just some more things to try out. 😉 👍 I have more ideas in which to further gain small efficiencies in the system one which involves making a cut in the spoon to aid in reducing the angle of attack and keeping a laminar flow around the spoon instead of getting a turbulent stall point. But these only really need to be introduced when upscaling) Have fun and I hope these contributions make at least a small improvement to the systems efficiency. One thing I wonder is if any of what I have suggested does anything for the rotational torque in the system and not just rotational speed. If there is an increase then this could be utilised by introducing more/larger coil packs for a greater output. Yes I could keep going on.. but that's the fun of experimentation. Take care mate. And I look forward to what you come up with. I also have an idea for a very cheap zero friction magnetic bearing (yes it does not require a point of contact) but I need to try it out to ensure it works as planned and there is not any magnetic flux buffeting or internal eddy currents affecting its operation, or any stability issues. All being well I will share this soon.

Liked the video. Back in the day, many jets had cone shaped structures on their respective intakes. Maybe that is where the viewer that commented on the orginal show got their idea? A pretty good demonstration, though.

The cone was added control the airflow. Early jet engines were pure air breathers, so you couldn't get to supersonic speed as the air mass flowed too fast inside the engine and shockwave stalled the turbine blades. This is why if you look example first jet fighter that Germany build in WW2, and compare it to MiG-15 or F-86 fighters, they all have fixed inlet. The fix for this problem was adjustable inlet design. Some fighters that had inlet in nose, had a cone shaped. But some had inlet aside and so on they got a extending ramp doors that made inlet smaller faster you flew. This way the air was directed to the mouth of inlet, and extensive air was directed outside, but most important was that air was slowed down. Example MiG-21 there cone automatically adjust so that while flying at supersonic speed from Mach 0.8-2.05 (it max, and air turbulence that happens at Mach 0.8) the cone starts to extend forward so that air hitting the tip is at Mach X, but further air travels forward, slower it becomes, so that when the air finally gets in the mouth of inlet, it decelerate to subsonic speed in the final 3-5 cm distance. And now you can run the turbine with clean air and compress it for power by heating it and pushing it through narrower outlet. Some fighters like example F-16 has fixed inlet size, what makes it so that you need to fly at high altitude like +15000 feet to get thin air enough and you maximize the power higher you go. But going lower altitude makes you suck more dense air and your performance is negated. With AV-8 Harrier it is other way around, it is pure air breather engine, and has highest performance at low altitude, but going higher and thinner air can't be collected enough and performance is lost. Why harrier has time to climb altitude record from start to 9000ft and does it faster than record breaking F-15A that accelerates faster after 15000ft. But comparing those to absolute speed monster MiG-25, it is crazy. The F-15 and MiG-25 are faster to climb than space rockets all the way to IIRC 60'000-80'000 feet, and then the space rocket goes by. So thinking how major effect a adjustable intake really is... You could probably improve that performance by adding a short ring around the spoons and being slightly "opening" to concentrate all the area air through the spoons.

Not at all, remember the rose turbine, exactly the same thing. We use a cone in our unusual turbine. It focuses the wind. Makes things coherent. Got the idea from the rose. It is a game changer

Now, put a bell cone around the spoon tips. Have it start atleast half way to the tip of the cone and extend at lest as far past the spoons and put a cylinder on the back side of the cone. Now your in the jet age.of wind turbines. Very nice work. I enjoy your easy going style. Please co ti ue.

Definitely way to go.... even an off-the-shelf plastic bowl would give a worthwhile improvement as they are nicely radiused at the rim.

@@ThinkingandTinkering Thanks.... as I may have mentioned previously, flow over the outer portion of the blade is far more significant for power generation than the inner. As you suggested in an earlier video, designing a smaller domestic turbine requires a completely different approach

Future idea. Cleaning rain or river water silt using a broken dyson vacuum vortex. Spinning the partials out. This will extend water filter life.

Make the cone long enough so when you point the big end at the sun it will concentrate heat at the small end to run a sterling engine. Wind over 5mph causes small end to point into the wind and run engine. When wind dies, weight of engine causes device to roll against a disc angled to point big end at the sun again. Notch the disc so 5mph is needed to escape the notch.

Have a suspicion that this is effectively a Dyson fan in reverse by which I mean the fan blows are by a ring of impellers which wind then probably pushes forward focussing into a cone of air which you don't see. I had wondered whether such a fan could be used as a wind turbine but even 'old' ones are too expensive for the experiment, this answers the question and shows one would need a cone to direct the wind out to the ring of impellers.

If you want the ultimate, use a fixed double cone (to eliminate trailing vortices) and a shroud. Shroud is changing the wind direction towards the center, whereas the cone is redirecting it somewhat away from the center. Thus they add up to axial flow and you need not do any spoon bending.

Hi Robert love all of your ideas and energy thankyou 👍👍I am developing a device and I am very excited but a little confused and I wonder if could help me out please? My last test of a turbine system showed us an efficiency of 99.3% this was 1119 rpm input via a belt drive and a measurement of 1112rpm on the shaft 👍😎😎 we also measured an air velocity increase on the output port which was significantly higher than what we measured on the input... It would be cool to have multipple turbines like this mounted to an array or a structure that could potentialy make them more efficient individually. Maybe a spinning structure... Maybe parabolic shaped or spherical/pyramidal array. Maybe an array with "wind guides" or a giant funel... Vortex funnel or vortex windguide... Lots of ideas here.

Can you build the Zagari windmill, its a cubic frame with a central vertical axle with 4 panels attached, the cubic frame has half a panel on each side of it, its to shield the wind but lets the wind go through the other half, so the vertical axle can spin at elevated speeds when the wind blows, its scary but it wont move due to the centrifugal force.

IDEA: build a ram pump, make it create a loop of constantly running water from a reservoir tank. Collect energy from the water fall back in to the tank. Bam. Free energy. You’re welcome.

Being an old tinkerer, i love your videos. i wonder if you could improve the effiency even more by puttin a raised ring, mayybe cardboard or plastic about 2 inches high around the tips of the spoons, that woud keep wind from sliding off the end of the spoons and help produce more rotation. I wonder if a fixed cone on the other side would also help. You might be able to replace some of the vertical wooden section with a flat piece of 6mm steel so that you only need to cut a narrow slot in the cone. This one can evolve a lot, I keep thinking of more things like putting the hole thing in a tube with reversed cones to catch more air take and take advantage of the Venturi effect.

Perhaps In addition to the cone, wing tips to the fan blades, preventing air flowing off the blade ends should make a substantial improvement to overall efficiency.

Can you put a large bottle on the outside so that it catches air from say 3 feet out in the circular area in focus is it you will also have to incorporate some way to aim directly at the wind with all that extra funnel around it.

If a cone and a bullet have the same base circumference (C) and height (h), the bullet will generally have a larger surface area. The surface area of the cone is given by the formula SA_cone = (C/2) * (C/2π + √((C/2π)² + h²)). The surface area of the bullet (a cylinder with a hemispherical tip) is given by SA_bullet = Ch + C²/2π. The difference comes from the second term of each formula. The bullet's surface area has a term C²/2π, which will be larger than the term involving the slant height in the cone's surface area, given that both shapes have the same base circumference and height. Lo and behold on the front of almost all commercial turbines you will find a bullet… or more accurately oblate spheroid or even more accurately "cylinder capped with a hemisphere." It was in your face all the time I have even seen stacked bullets with a gap which are hollow, I’d be very interested to know what this does to efficiency?

Loving these videos and channel, wonderful resource given freely & I appreciate that greatly! Did Robert mis-speak on this video regarding the amp measurement. I’m wondering if the display was showing 6amps as oppose milliamps? I’m not familiar with reading lab equipment like that so forgive me. I’m just comparing the screen/reading versus the wind / vibration artificial-muscle one when it display around 270 milliamps I believe. Thank you for your time and help!

You've built a Pelton Wheel for wind. I wonder what other optimizations you could make with that in mind. Like a venturi tube inlet before the cone like a jet engine. This would actually be more practical than it sounds if installed in a place with very constant wind direction.

On suitability upto a size. The cone diverts a certain volume of air for a given wind speed which tends to speed it up a little at the spoons. But i suspect that for a given length of cup of spoons, much larger diameter of cones will tend to accelerate air at diameters furtherand further outside the sweep area of the spoons. While larger diameters with spoon and cones will certainly work, at some point I believe they'll provide diminishing returns.

Quite interesting. One could argue that low energy production is better than no energy production, so it does belong on every house. As I’m watching the test, I’m thinking that the cone increases wind velocity towards the spoons, so conditions are not really equal. But it certainly shows how design tweaks can have some impact. There are plenty wind turbine designs out there for cruising sailboats. They are not huge and not as high. Many are rated around 400 watts. Perhaps look at those for design inspiration

If you add a cone to the inside to deflect the air to the bowls of the spoons. Would it help if you had a stationary outer trucated cone around the outside to make a larger area of wind be guided to the spoon bowls? i.e. side on cross-section / - outer cone O - spoon bowl \ \ centreline / / O \ -outer cone 22/03/2022 - update: I just saw your video on your other channel where you did exactly this. Glade to see it did make a slight improvement... I'll get me coat.

With the cone all the way out the the spoon bowl, maybe cut 30° slats into the cone for the spoons to fit into and not worry about melting the spoons and twisting them? Would the cone make the water model more efficient? Or would it throw the water everywhere before it hit the spoons? There's probably some magic combination of water speed and cone angle that generates a smooth shear of water aimed at the sweet spot of the spoon bowl.

I will have to investigate the water model - I think cutting slots in the cone would add tot he complexity of the build and getting it true so it didn't wobble all over the place might be difficult to do in practice - one of the other good attributes of this build is the ease that it can be replicated

Great video and channel. Would a shroud fixed around the moving turbine make any improvements? Also, as mentioned by someone else, would fixing the cone to the axial to reduce the moving mass improve efficiency too?

Im wondering how much better it would get with a cone on the back covering the generator and smoothing the flow out the back? Of course it would be mounted solid to the framework, but l bet it would decrease the turbulance and create a draught type effect to help pull the air through the spoons.

Adding a second row of spoons with a vane in between with maybe a set of spoons to catch the air and turn it much in the way jet engine fans use stator vanes to redirect the air onto the next airfoil

I wonder if a reversed cone that allows air to pass through would increase the theoretical area of wind hitting the blades as wind that would normally pass by the blade would be directed onto it.

I bet if you had a ring of nozzle cones around the edge angled less than 45 degrees it would raise the air pressure instead of resist it. Or one big one around the whole thing, that’s probably what you meant anyway.

would adding another ring of spoons half way up the cone increase efficiency or just create too much turbulence & drag? i've always been curious to know if multiple blade rings of smaller & larger blades would make any meaningful difference

A non-rotating cone would increase the efficiency of the turbine as the current set up is driving the mass of the cone as well as the rotor for electricity generation.

You can't ignore the cone. It also have wind hitting it so it's included as swept or wind exposed area. Nothing goes above Betz.

I wonder if the cone should have ogive cross section instead? AFAIK, this would exploit the Coanda effect where it only works on curved surface. If I understand it right, having an ogival cone would maximize the flow through the turbines instead of the momentum where it tries to flow past the turbine.

Could you use a fixed cone with fins spiraling in the same direction as the spoon's spin? Currently the cone has the opposite effect as it's boundary layer will be dragging the airflow in the same direction as the spoons which would decrease the airflow's force on them..

Put spiralling flutes on the cone so it acts more like a drill bit, wouldn't that make the wind further compress the air prior to it hitting the spoons?

@@ThinkingandTinkering I could be wrong, but I thought the turning action would aide the air to increase in speed. Like when you take water from say a 5 inch channel and step it down to a 1 inch channel the speed increases. Maybe do lots of cones, but the other way around with spiral tubes directing the air to the spoons. I feel that would not work too well as the additional weight of the tubes with multiple cones would more than cancel out the increased air speeds achieved.

what if the cone flared a bit like a wing, creating a lower pressure zone along the cone's slope? It would still come to a point at the front, but rather than a straight cone, the cone contour would look more like a wing profile...???

As you were speaking, near the end of the video, I was imagining the air flows near the spoon cups with the attached larger cone. I think the greater volume of air would be moving up the cone and hitting the spoons at a sharp angle. It would also be deflecting the perimeter airflow from hitting the spoons at 90 degrees to their rotation access. I wonder what improvement, if any, you would get if you bent the spoon cups so they were 90 degrees to the air flow coming off the cone? Another thought just occurred to me. What if you cut the spoon handles to the length of the spoon cup and glued them to the disk as before. Then you glued a second set of modified spoons to the backs of the cups of the first row of spoons increasing the diameter of the turbine. You would have to reduce the number of spoons at the shortest diameter but by every third or fourth row out from the center there would be enough space between the cups to add a spoon thus doubling the spoons per row. By the time you reached your current test models diameter you would have many more spoons interacting with the air flow and possibly a greater efficiency.

I think mitigating the side wind impact will be easy, just put a tube around the blades. But i doubt that would make any difference in these lab conditions.

The cone improves efficiency as well as it does because it's redirecting that narrow wind stream out to the more efficient cups of the spoons. In a real world situation and presuming the spoon handles also can contribute if they are angled right, I bet you would do better without the cone. Also, how are you measuring the wind speed?

@@ThinkingandTinkering Ok good. Thanks. At what point are you using the anemometer? At the outlet of the blower nozzle or just before the windmill? If it's at the blower nozzle, are you using the area of the nozzle to determine your calculations? That would be the most accurate determination of air imput power, but unfortunately, the calculation of output power gets muddied by how well the wind is distributed across the larger surface area of the windmill. I suspect the cone efficiently distributes that narrow airstream to the most efficient parts of the windmill. However, when comparing efficiencies in an airstream that would be large enough to cover the entire windmill, like natural wind would be, the cone may not be as beneficial and may even rob some useable blade surface area because the spoon handles would otherwise catch some wind as well.

A flashing LED is not really a suitable load to use to measure power output. Firstly it is not a linear load wrt voltage, and secondly the rapidly changing load as it flashes makes taking readings difficult. In practice, the output from the turbine will likely be fed into an MPPT (maximum power point tracking) charge controller which takes the maximum power it can get, and you would get the best results using one of those and measuring the power it delivers to a discharged battery. As the battery voltage will not change much in a short period of time, a current reading will be directly proportional to the power output.
