I got a beginner wheel very similar to this one. I've just started getting into throwing and for me it's perfect: low cost of entry makes finding out if it's something I enjoy, and if it wears out that means i enjoy it enough to purchase an upgrade 😉. And it sure beats kicking a tire with your foot to spin manually. Oddly enough, they made it with 3 bat pins, instead of the usual 2, so I'll need to drill my own hole. Thanks for your review

I also have a Shimpo VL-Whisper, and I love it. I was thinking about getting a vevor for some smaller projects, and very glad to see such a reputable potter like yourself doing an honest review. Thank you for yet another great video!!

Third option for throwing on bats - use old vinyl records (you can buy them cheap at a second hand store) and stick them on by using an old rag. It works pretty well! I'm sure there are ceramicists who have videos where they show how to 😊

I've been gathering a bunch of materials for making my own home-made pottery wheel. I had the great fortune to be able to get ahold of a very old treadmill that was built like a tank. I took the electronics out of it and the electric motor because they have DC motors, which is a must for a pottery wheel to be able to control the speed of it as desired, and as I took it apart, I discovered that the motor is a 3.5 horse power DC motor! a very strong motor that will allow me to build my pottery wheel with a LARGE wheel head so because of the high power of the motor it will be a wheel that will be able to throw very large amounts of clay, in excess of 10 or 15 kilos or more of clay. So, it will remain useable and capable for a very long time as I progress through small amounts of clay to larger amounts for bigger vessels. The main thing I have a hard time on deciding on is the bearing type to use for the head. and to be honestly I feel that because of the power of the wheel motor, and my desire to make a stronger wheel, I might just decide to use a wheel bearing assembly from an automobile to that the bearing will last forever and be capable of ANY weight I might decide to throw at it. Plus, Iam a retired Mechanic so I have all the knowledge and tools needed to create a wheel for the ages, one that will easily last through my life and the life of my children and grandchildren. Since almost all of the items I have acquired, I got all of them for free, and the automobile wheel bearing and spindle assembly I will get from an auto wrecker and then I will do my best to build it like a tank so it can last a good long time.

I keep watching these videos when potters i follow, you included, are trying out these alternative wheels. with this one i think the clunking sounds would drive me mad. im not sure i would get used to and ignore. in my Adult Education Ceramic weekly class i attend, i use a Shimpo wheel, i like this as the foot pedal once set at a speed you can take your foot off and it keeps going until you touch it again. I am watching this as i have just watched the bigger wheel size, and out of the two i prefer the larger, not sure why, i dont plan to throw too large but i thing this is just too small. Thank you for your opinion, it helps this new potter to keep practicing, learning and loving clay. x

Thank you for sharing your review of this Vevor. It sure seems to work for the needs of even an intermediate potter. I like how you comment as you go. Was the louder clicking from the wheel or from your kiln?
@deMibPottery
@deMibPottery 11 ай бұрын
Thanks. There are some noise and clicking from the wheel but I think it got enhanced by the recording. All in all I think it was acceptable but off course not as noise-less as the Shimpo :-)

I've had my cheap wheel for a year now. 3 kg of not-stiff clay is about the limit. Still works fine.

There is a lot of noise, is it from the wheel?
@deMibPottery
@deMibPottery 11 ай бұрын
It is, as I also point out, a bit more noisy but some of it may also comes from a more roomy mic I had to use as my old one broke :-)

What type of clay did you mention in the video? Something like ………steiner from Germany with high iron and grog. Can this clay be used for Raku or low temp process?
@deMibPottery

Three informational facts: Is your Shimpo a RK3E? Then the motor is 400W, but this is NOT directly comparable with the power in the wheel head. Only partly related. The Vevor does not spin as freely when stoped. No of cause not. Vevor is belt driven, Shimpo is a direct dc-drive. But even that is not as free as my old RK88e now standing in the corner that would take 5-10 turns before it stops. To my knowledge Nidec Shimpo does not produce wherls with bat-pins. My RK3E bought half a year ago came in a box that had been opened and modified by a third party company. BUT Nidec Shimpo has pre-drilled holes in the back with the 'correct' distance of 10". Info to Danes: RK3E'en med pins blev købt hos Silica Nordic for samme pris som en uden bat pins.

Thanks. I also got my Shimpo with pins but dont know who drilled. The box was sealed, though :-)

Is that clicking noise the wheel or something else in your studio??? Otherwise I'll give it 10 out of 10😊

As I mention in the video there is a small clicking noise from this wheel. It sounds louder in the recording as it is but guess it should not be there
