Hey Mikkel, be a little careful when using stiff clay. I tried making a 40cm wide platter from stiff clay and was straining, huffing and puffing just like you in this video. Unfortunately I ended up with a case of tendonitis that prevented me from doing any heavy work for a couple of months. Remember we are getting older so understand your limits and leave the strenuous stuff to the young folk.
@deMibPottery4 күн бұрын
Its not as bad as it looks and the firmer clay makes it easier to do the wide shallow pots :-)

Do you find that the edges lift a bit on drying and firing?
@deMibPottery7 күн бұрын
Depends on the clay and how you dry it but generally yes, edges do raise a bit. But with very grogged clay and slow drying much less so

Thanks for the stoneware grog advice. I've been throwing with normal porcelain and consistently experiencing collapsed rims on my platters. Tooling the inside is also no shame IMO.

Thanks. Porcelain is more difficult for sure. But not impossible :-) Here is an example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hmHHqXShgdeInpYsi=pKapZXa3RUGN_8st

Thanks for another good video, Im moving up in clay weight but not up to 22lb yet. I liked the 3 steps you explained it well and once class starts again i will give it ago, the shape of the bowl is very nice. Lets hope this nice weather carries on, its still hit and miss in the UK so keeping fingers crossed, makes handling clay somewhat difficult, till the next video.,

Neat! I didnt know you could stack lumps of clay on top of the first one, but it doesn't seem to leave any weak points once the bowl was finished ! Will you be sharing the trimming/glazing firing of this piece? I bet it will look great!
@deMibPottery15 күн бұрын
Many of the other big pots, in videos here on my channel, is made the same way. I never had any problems with centering this way :-) This one is already trimmed, and did not do video of that. But check some of the other big bowl videos here. It's basically the same.

@deMibPottery15 күн бұрын
Thanks 🙏 Its not actual holes. Just some uneven carving. I soothed it a bit but for the kind of glaze I use its actually fine with some scratches like that. It just ads some extra live to it :-)
