This was a very nice video! There are actually two different night trains between Stockholm and Berlin. The compartment you were travelling in is called couchette (not sleeper). The other night train run by SJ has also sleeper compartments with 1-3 beds where you don’t have to make tour bed yourself. They are actually cheaper if you want to have your own compartment as a solo traveller. A few compartments even have WC and shower.

@@kovie9162 The prices depend on when you book and when you travel. I looked now at 15 August Stockholm 17:34 to Berlin 09:25. It costs 3157 SEK (About 300€) for your own sleeper compartment with a small breakfast and a basin(in the compartment) but without WC in the compartment. They also have more expensive compartments with WC and shower in the compartment.

The coaches in themselves seem to be of the same quality as when I travelled around on a euro train card in 1974. Aww my partner and I took this train from and to Stockholm last year so we could bring our dog with us on holidays comfortably instead of taking the plane. So a big plus is that you can travel in this train with your pet, the only condition is that you need to book the whole cabin (just like you did) for you, no matter the size of your party. There was a special code we were able to use to reduce the price of the cabin, something hidden in their website and related to travelling with a pet, but I can't remember what it was exactly. Overall it was quite comfortable, the dog had time to do lil pee breaks whenever the train stopped. We bought a lot of snacks and drinks and just enjoyed the ride, staring at the beautiful view :) (super nice to see you in Europe, I started following this channel last year to help me plan my trip to New Zealand and your advice helped a lot, we had the time of our life in NZ earlier this year :D )

As a Swede, having to reserve a table in the restaurant car is a huge culture shock to me. Never heard about that practice before, and it's definitely not the norm... I know that some SJ-trains in Sweden require you to book meals in advance if you want to be served a warm meal by your seat in first class (on trainrides up to about 3 hours travel time), but never having to pre-book seats in restaurant cars on longer routes.
@chloeandludvig4 ай бұрын

As far as I know, it is specific to Snälltåget, since their whole concept is running classic old-style trains. (The whole company concept is running comparatively cheap trains using old surplus rolling stock they bought from SJ.) (For comparison, SJ's restaurant cars are much simpler, you still get decent quality food but all the warm meals are prefab microwave meals.)
@Newbyte2 ай бұрын
I get why they do it. Last time I travelled with Snälltåget the restaurant car was packed. There's no chance it would've worked if people could just come and go. The space they provide is just too little.

Hey Chloe! This was a fun, and informative, but also puzzling vid. So nice to see an old-school train car still doing good service (though, another commenter, 57thorns, did an excellent assessment of your not a/c probs to which I would only add that a multi-lingual sticker (saying, "no A/C, only heat -- open the flerkin' window!) would have been helpful?) And the whole dining car thing IS ON THEM! They did NOT seem to include this MOST important page 1, but was on a later page? Not your fault. And I thought it was telling that you had to take a nap halfway through deploying your bunk!😂 The reason bunks are deployed by stewards in North America and elsewhere is that if you accidentally crush a finger, or fall out of an improperly set-up bunk -- it, esprin the US, would lead to mucho dinero in injury compensation. Apparently, the Scando-Germanics are employing a "Midsommar" style of self-survival?🤔 Still loved the trip and the vid, and Ludwig would have been sardined in one of those bunks!💕

You always make your own bed in couchettes, pre-made beds or attendants making the bed is generally reserved for the more expensive sleeper cabins rather than the couchette cabins, and they also have softer dedicated beds rather than seat benches made into beds at night. None on Snälltåget, but there are sleeper cabins on the SJ Stockholm-Berlin night train. The downside is that the SJ train doesn't have a restaurant car, which Snälltåget does while in Sweden but not in Germany. Also SJ runs year-round unlike Snälltåget.

I love overnight trains, so long as, of course, I have a lie flat sleep situation. The only two downsides to it are that it can be hard to fall and stay asleep and get a good night's sleep, and you miss all the scenery you pass through at night, assuming that there is any as some routes are pretty ordinary. Otherwise, there's nothing quite like an overnight train--especially if you have your own compartment, even better if it has an en suite!

For many Europeans its completely normal to share a compartment with strangers, just like staying in a shared room at the hostel. Several generations grabbed an interrail ticket and crisscrossed Europe that way. I never did that, but my family always took the night train to visit relatives that lived far away. So I guess it takes some getting used to. Whenever i take the night train i share couchette compartment with strangers. And wouldn't you know: strangers are nice and always have interesting stories or a beer to share. I guess I would fit right in on a Indian or Russian style when one trainwagon is just one big compartment with tonnes of "beds".

Then i tried to order for 4 more people since the compartment fit 6 people, and the price was still 500 euros. If you travel with sj second class where you would need 2 compartment for 6 people as they only room 3, the price would been 1200 euros. So its all about how many travels. But there again it would be cheaper for a solo traveler since you would only need 1 ticket and compartment. A solo traveler saying snälltåget it expensive is understandable but also missinformative, as you could include 5 more people for the trip and they would all basically travel free.

Oh, and if one can afford it, definitely a private compartment, but ideally not like the one here which is basically a 6 person compartment that has seats during the day and couchettes at night, only all to yourself. Rather, one with at least a wash basin and hopefully an en suite bathroom with toilet and shower, meaning a real sleeping compartment. I mean if you're going to splurge and spend close to $500, you should get all that for it. In this situation I probably would have gone for a regular couchette because that IS a lot of money to spend just to have a couchette compartment for yourself--all the more so given that they attendant didn't even make up the bed. But I have no idea what deluxe compartments cost on overnight trips in Europe these days. They're a small fortune here in the US and no way could I afford one these days.

There's currently an issue with availability of new sleeper cars being low, because the demand for sleeper trains have gone up again in Europe. A lot of countries thought the era of sleeper trains were over, becaue of cheap flights and high speed trains. So they just kept holding on to old stock, expecting service to be cancelled. But now the popularity and demand is increasing again, and rail companies are ordering a lot of new stock. In Norway our sleeper trains are starting to quite old now, so we are getting brand new replacement trains starting in 2026.

Sadly you can do this on a back of a freight train at no cost. Cross border freight trains are almost non-existent in Europe.

As a Swede, I am almost embarrassed by the non-existent service and low standard of the Swedish train network. One would therefore think that the ticket was cheap at least, which I don't think it was.
@chloeandludvig5 ай бұрын
I don't think it was that bad :) Still a very fun experience!

at the price they are charging I won't be using this train ...it's like a legalised form of theft.

The room I had would be much more affordable with a group or family :)

Interesting but i dont think you can really moan about people being noisy . Most people do not go to bed at 9.30 or 10pm as adults.They could make the walls better sound proofed though in a lot of places to be fair

The private compartment is meant for 6 people, it's not that expensive if you actually use all the spots.

$500 US didn't even come with meals or turn-down service?! 😳 No, I would not book that train.

@@chloeandludvig for the price of the ticket, or an extra charge?
@meatytraveller5 ай бұрын
The price is also exactly the same if you travel with 2 people, 4 people, or 6 people. I took this train from Berlin to Stockholm in a private compartment as a group of 4, it was still $500 total, but now split into 4.
@rowaystarco4 ай бұрын
The money is for the entire room, with capacity for 6 people, hence all the water. So about 80 freedom bucks per person (including VAT of course).

It's expensive considering what you got or experience in this sleeper train. No shower, cabin is full of dust. It should've atleast came with breakfast
@chloeandludvig5 ай бұрын
Yes, pretty expensive - although I am sure these cabins are usually shared between larger groups/families :)

Not good accomodations, poor service, food selection sad considering what you would expect from either country. You couldn't do your work. So, it was an experience for a first-time, low-income individual. Would have been more constructive to fly or even to rent a vehicle.😊

Instead of being sarcastic and judgemental you could've done you're homework and have a table for dinner. If this their policy, you should've known, don't patronize them.

I wasn't being patronising... I even say in the video, It must be something ' I' overlooked when booking. It was my fault and I'm very clear on that.
@kovie91625 ай бұрын
I didn't get that at all from her video. Maybe it's a cultural thing. People in the English-speaking world tend to be more informal and snarky, which is not sarcasm, more like its funny cousin.
