I agree as a GS main it isn't good for players who are easily frustrated. Especial new players who haven't experienced how combat flow in MH works yet. They may try GS one time and think all the combat in MH is slow or *clunky* and never come back. I've met 3 people in collage who tried, but their main complaint was clunkyness. They tried the GS and Lance as their first weapons without understanding the combat structure.

@@TheCatslock THIS. I just played 3 hours of MHR, my first MH game, and I am so unbelievably frustrated by the clunkiness - good to hear it's just the weapon! I had tried the insect glaive as well, but it wasn't too much of an improvement. I've crafted some dual blades, and I look forward to seeing if they're any better! The default weapon really should've been the easiest weapon to use, not one that gives the impression of clunkiness~

@@mishkarae Wait, you probably tried the “Longsword” as that is the MH Rise default weapon. The great sword is the heavy one. That's weird the Longsword has been my main since 3rd portable. I wouldn't call it clunky it's one of the easiest to master especially in GU and Rise. You should go for a sword and shield or bow. Bows are pretty sick in this.

@@jacobkingsley5929 Yeah, after posting that I realised it must've been the longsword. But no, it was very slow and clunky, a terrible choice for a default weapon. I ended up going with Dual Blades, which were way more useful for me ^^

If you want to improve in MH and learn how it is played optimally- i.e. you are serious about learning the flow and not just play casually forever- then GS and Hammer are arguably good "teacher" weapons. They are weapons that demand patience of the player and show you that the game is not a mash fest.

Greatsword is the single most punishing weapon in the entire game. Taking it out and putting it away is slow, you move at the speed of glacier when holding it,even uncharged attacks require massive commitment when compared to other weapons and in order to make most of it you have to learn how to time tackling. It's the worst weapon for beginners. Good beginner weapons are bow, sword and shield, dual blades and insect glaive. A lot of people also recommend longsword bit due to relying so much on parrying I honestly disagree. Sure it's easy to learn but it only gets really fun once mastered or at least mastered to the point where you're parrying almost all the time.

For me when i see people upload their game is to early and to late on things when battling monsters. Like never go to early when the monster is in rage mode to start sharpening and eating make sure you have room to eat and resharpen your items and overall learn how the mosnters move also even on easiest quest just eat every time cause the more you play the more those easiest quest like gathering will become a bother wants boss monsters joins in. Also fun fact well i don't know if they do it on this game but past monster hunter games if you joined an online lobby the boss monsters gets more powerful then you playing solo.

It's just recommended to start with just a few weapons so you can get really familiar with how they work and you'll be proficient with using them. That will make the more difficult fights later on a little less difficult. Of course you are free to use all 14 weapons equally, but focusing on 1-3 at first and then slowly branching out and trying the others will probably work out best.

The great sword is a good starting weapon? I'm not sure about that unless you want to expose all of your bad habits and teach good behavior. Between the huge recovery times (that you need to know to roll out of) and incredibly slow combos that require forethought and positioning it's not like you can just go out there and get smacking. Did you mean "long sword"? Even that's not super beginner friendly with its gauges and reactive gameplay but it's a lot more friendly than the great sword. I'd have said that the LBG is far more beginner friendly, and the option that players that prefer ranged combat will want to try out first.

Just ignore unhelpful comments. There are people stuck in the old days of Monster Hunter and can't understand that they were a newcomer once upon a time. Most hunts can be completed with on-level gear in less than 20 minutes, so the 50 minute timer should be more than enough. I would expect you're missing out on something simple. If you're melee, are you sharpening your weapon when it gets dull? Do you spend a lot of time healing, or simply not in the same zone as the monster? Are you getting lost or have trouble using wirebugs to get around? Different parts of the monster take more damage from certain weapons (typically, tails are weaker to cutting weapons and heads are weaker to blunt weapons). This is indicated by the color of the damage numbers when you got the monster. Orange means you're hitting in a good spot. White means there's probably a better spot to hit. Arrekz and Gaijin Hunter usually have pretty good weapon guides (though I don't know how many they have out already), so if you're struggling with knowing what attacks to do when, those might be a good resource. It might be helpful to watch someone on Twitch play, and see what they're doing that you're not. If none of that seems to help, I'd be happy to join you in a multiplayer hunt and give you tips based on your play.

@@dinolover Another video I watched emphasized the importance of using the whetstone during hunts. Total game changer for me. Now I’m plowing through hunts. I knew my weapons would deteriorate over time but I thought I had to just deal with it until I crafted better gear. Nope. Just keep my weapons sharp and ready. I do firmly believe in getting gud because Dark Souls games are my absolute favorite games to play, but I’m very ignorant to Monster Hunter. VERY ignorant. Like I know nothing. But that little pointer helped me push ahead.
