This happened to me when I was in college, i had $450 in the bank, wrote a check for $430 for the rent, then the gas station charged 2 purchases from a couple of weeks back that I had forgotten about because I only used the banks webpage to check the balance instead of me doing it manually and was charged an overdraft fee for each gas station purchase and sometimes gas stations charge $1 before the entire purchase, so I was basically paying an overdraft fee for the overdraft fee. I had to go to the bank and beg for a refund which they gave me and I actually learned my lesson.

Waive/ Opt-out of having overdraft "protection" on your account. Some banks will allow you to opt-out but, they're not going to go out of their way to tell you about it because charging fees is how they make money. It's better to get a "decline" at the register and have to put something back than to get hit with overdraft fees. Pay your rent/mortgage check from a different account than your everyday debit purchases. This way you KNOW that rent/mortgage check is going to clear and not be mixed in with a bunch of little miscellaneous purchases. And of course, whenever possible pay with CASH. You can't overdraft cash money! You have it or you don't.💸

Don't forget to ask for account spending limits. Perhaps it's because I have been the victim of "Prime Time " special levels of ID Theft, but I self imposed a lower spending limit on my account and any transaction above that and I have to call my credit union for them to issue a one time approval for a specific merchant and amount. It can be a bit of a hassle, but I would rather have to do that, than deal with the headaches of cleaning up after ID theft. Which, I'm still going through and I first caught it when filing my 2012 federal tax return. I also did everything right on keeping my ID safe, so don't think that's going to keep it from happening. Please folks, take heed and just put forth the small effort now and save yourself tons of time, money and stress later. Prevention is worth more than you think.

Many Banks do not support and parts of the banking system so not support preventing overdrafts and many that operate a work around to simulate that they do operate a buffer, which forces you to have an overdraft any way, charge you fees and also force you to have at least so much in your account which is bad for a vulnerable or disabled person that someone else is trying to help with money and independence. None really understands how out of the arc and inflexible for the vulnerable the banking system is!!

An nsf check has a higher fee than overdraft. (ACH payments can also come back nsf. Not everything gets a decline.) AND the merchant will also charge you a fee for nsf. They also try to run it through again... Another nsf fee. You also still owe the merchant for the item you didn't pay for. Obviously the best thing is don't write the check. 2nd best option is overdraft protection because it's less fee than overdraft, and the item is paid for.

It’s really unfortunate because for some ppl they just think of getting what they want at that moment, some can’t even be bothered so they aren’t aware and wld just look at it as they will get a paycheck soon so it will cover it and the negative disappears. But then such can lead to a pattern of it repeating itself and then those unnecessary fees add up.

I bounced a check once when i was 19. I paid for school books and miscalculated around $10 with a small local bank. I got a phone call from a collector who worked for the bank who acted like i robbed them. I was so embarrassed it never happened again. Bottom line is you need to plan all your purchases. If that means bringing lunch to work or making coffee at home verses going to Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks then that is what you have to do. It's your responsibility to budget, otherwise the banks make more money

I used to be that way a while back. I literally was doing that every week being stupid. My bank would charge $35 every time. Doing some quick math, that was costing me $140 a month, $1680 a year. That's $1680 that I lost in one year, just for being stupid with my money. That's $1680 that I could have used else where, in buying a "new" used vehicle, investing in my retirement account, to go on vacation, to have on the side for a rainy day. Makes one think when they do the quick math.

The last time I paid a monthly bank fee I was 19 years old. Since then I keep the minimum balance. It used to be $1000 now it's $5000. I have a seperate emergency fund too. The minimum bank balance is the emergency fund of the emergency fund. Anything above that I pay off my mortgage early. In 2 years my 25 year mortgage is now a 16 year mortgage. And in those 2 years I lost my full time job, then got laid off several times and I have been doing temp work/ temporary contracts and still made triple payments on the mortgage while also renovating a rental property. I have done pretty good with some of the temporary contracts though, they just don't last and end quick. Currently I need $1000 a month income to pay all expenses and comfortably buy what I need. Above that is disposable/savings/investment real estate.

There is more than one reason why that number is high, there are basic things like shelter, food and warmth that cannot go unpaid that are actually to blame for the vast amount of overdraft fees. Not everyone in this country is middle class. There are millions of people living in the brink of deep poverty and medical bills, medication expenses, even gas is enough to make people's accounts bounce. What's the other choice? Just don't buy the medicine you need to live? Just don't put gas in your car to get to work where you can make money to pay for rent and food? Just don't be poor, that's your reasoning? These commonsense ideologies shared here are what the system already operates with and they are the reason why every year the working class is paying more and more for being poor. Listen just breaking your foot can cause a person to owe thousands of dollars and having to miss work, and paying for medicine which gets more expensive every year. You live in a bubble and assume all people see the same situation. When you have to pay rent, you send the check even if it is going to bounce because the only other option is to be homeless.

LMAO. . .I used to play "beat the check" or "work the float" (the time between the pending period and when the item is a hard debit to the account)...I used to do payday loans as well until they were outlawed in my state. . .when reality hit me on the amount of money just being thrown away I had no other choice but to strive to get my act together. . .and just a FYI... some banks will as a courtesy refund some fees if asked and the activity is not chronic..let's get some of our money back...God Bless and Enjoy! ! !

This is why I always opt out of overdraft protection on my checking account. I don't want a safety net on my bank account, because it would be too tempting to take advantage of it. Which I have done in the past and I spent two months where my entire paycheck wouldn't even cover the negative balance in my account. When your bank account is overdrawn by $750 and your paycheck is only $600 and you've still got to find a way to come up with $800 to pay all your bills before the end of the month. It's one of the worst feelings in the world and I never want to go through that again.

I totally agree with Dave here. Overdraft fees strictly apply to checking accounts aka CASH. They are charging you money for them allowing you to go into the negative to purchase whatever.... and part of their money (the bank) is used to complete the transaction so they have a right to charge you an overdraft fee. Bottom line... be responsible.

I figured I cant spend money I dont have without a credit card, not a debit card. I quick the bank soon after. Transferred to Wells Fargo, and shockingly enough they waved the first 3 overdrafts for free, fallowed by canceling the possibility of spe doing over in said account. Odd banks dont have such a simple option.

Yes Dave we do need a class. I know a girl that whined about doing a budget for over two years saying that it won't make a difference in her life. She is always cash strapped while making 56k/yr now 72k. She finally listened last week guess what she discovered? She going out every month for the past 3 years she has been passing $150 every month in over draft fees.

This is why you cannot rely solely on online banking if you're going to bank with a bank that charges overdraft fee$. If transactions don't post on time, they disappear like magic and then reappear days later. This makes it easy to spend money you already spent without realizing it. Only keeping a written ledger of all your transactions remedies this!

I’ve been changed two overdraft charges in 8 years (at $40 each) I was able to have both reversed however both were my fault for stupid oversights as I don’t normally use my debit card at POS so “assume” the money is there for my monthly withdrawals.

Don't people balance their checkbooks anymore? I don't have anything on autopay, so I know where my money is coming from and where it is going to. I keep tabs on my balance to the penny - every month and often every week or day!

I have certainly had my share of overdraft fees. Although I have the app on my phone and check it constantly I can't seem to understand why the balance is never true!! If I am watching everything get deducted .... and it shows I have $8 left and I spend $5 ..... how on earth do I check the next day and I am $6 negative?????

The reason why is because when you swipe, some places take up to 3 days to go through with the charge so you swipe, the money doesn't get taken out, and you think you have that money and then they take it out. That's how you overdraft. I bought an app called My Budget Book. About $3 and I put in the charge to my account when I swipe so even if my bank says I have the money, my budget book tells me different so I'm at least more cautious. It's not connected to your bank so you have to keep up with it.

I really dont know if people who overdraft like this truly understand. It seems like a simple concept but my very short stint as a teller I saw this first hand. Education is important whether it's from the parents or the schools.

I never bounced a check in my life because I tried to understand how banks operated and made sure I beat the system. Meaning I always made sure I had some money in a savings account that was linked to my checking account so in the rare chance I did go over it would be a small fee (if any depending on the bank). You can also opt into having the transaction canceled entirely if you don't have enough balance to cover it. Talk to your Banks ppl and understand how they do business. Knowledge is power and will save you tons of $$$

Bounced a "check" to myself by accidentally transferring money between my two checking accounts in the wrong direction. Them adjusting my accounts to reflect my actually funds ended up costing me 3 days of hardship because they accidentally "adjusted" an additional 5000 dollars from my checking account.

There was a time when you had “float” the time between writing a check and the time it clears, could be a couple of weeks because it was done manually at check clearing houses. Now it’s done electronically. I wrote a check to a contractor that cleared the same day, we used the same bank. Be careful

It’s all about keeping track of every transaction. I hate banks but their online banking apps allow you to keep track of every transaction. Usually there’s one or two transactions that haven’t been sent through to the bank yet so you still have to match the tally you have in your head with what the online app says your balance is. The tally in your head should match or sometimes is less than what your online app says it is. Go with the smaller figure. And always remember that little BS transactions at convenience stores every day add up and don’t spend any money you absolutely don’t need to. Watch everything you spend

It's not that simple. You balance your checkbook, everything checks out. You double check by stopping by the ATM machine and checking your balance you've got $101. You use your debit card to gas your car $20, buy a can of dog food $2, buy a hamburger $1. You just racked up $70 in overdraft fees because the gas station put a $100 hold and won't release it till the end of the week.

Rule number 2 Banks are for profit. Credit unions are for people. I go to one bank and they are not trusted with more than one job.... Holding my money in my savings account until I come in and withdraw it. ALL my normal transactions go through credit unions. The sooner you accept that banks cannot be responsible enough to handle your money for ANYTHING more than a savings account, the sooner you will get your mindset right about how to handle your finances

I wonder how much of this would go away if banks were honest and didn’t have intentionally slow and non functioning methods of keeping track of your money... but of course the week long and Holiday delay transactions never seem to work AGAINST the banks favor... so strange

I feel terrible watching my dad swipe 3 cards that get declined, I saw his debit card statement once and he had 6 overdrafts on the first page. The thing is if he suddenly had a million dollars, he would soon be broke again so I figure best I can do is save my money and take care of him when I'm older and wealthier.
