I missed a payment once that was set up to go out automatically, even though I was nowhere near my credit limit. They charged me for the failed payment. I phoned them up and they admitted it was their mistake and refunded me the charge. A month later, I get a letter saying my credit limit is being reduced because I missed a payment. Phoned them up and they said they couldn't do anything because it's all done automatically. So I cancelled my credit card on the same phone call. Funny though that if I miss a payment, they can fine me, but if the bank misses a payment that I've set up, I don't get to fine them. In the UK, they introduced a law that they can't charge more than it costs them to inform you. So basically the cost of an automated letter.

As a person who saw the introduction of overdraft fees, I so relate to this story! I lost a couple of bank accounts because the bank charged overdraft fees and then more daily fees when I didn't pay in a specific timeframe! There were times when they even held deposits causing more fees! It was such a scam.

I knew a girl in college whose dad owned a Gas Station in Greece, perhaps more, I don't know. She didn't need a job because her father paid her tuition here, bought her a used car, paid her rent (but she had roommates). One of her 2 roommates was poor and didn't have enough money to (do whatever) so Maria said; "Just go to the bank and GET some money.".

Not to mention ATM FEES! My friends tease me about going out of my way to go to the bank instead of using the closest ATM. I don’t care. I refuse to pay any super rich, disgustingly greedy bank to make me pay to get my own money. Soon they’ll catch onto me and figure out a way to charge me even if I go directly to the bank. Oh well, I guess I’ll have to do the old mattress thing. The old folks know about the mattress. 😂😂😂. It doesn’t charge.

Exactly.. my bank app has this Widget that is supposed to make it easy to check your balance but it only updates maybe twice a day!. I had been able to get into my app via my biometic (iknow..) thumb .. but now THAT isn't working so I have to enter in my looong password which is a hassle. but I was told that I only get charged an overdraft if my balance is negative for 24 hours... but that is a lie.. cause my balance was in the positive yesterday all day until I went to buy something at the store .. It wasn't even 24 hours and I woke up with back to back overdrafts!!! I don't know what triggered that.. There are zero time stamps on my transactions (only a manager can see them).. They often can't figure it out... and get confused.. My boyfriend chastises me about not handling my money responsibly. Of course they are old school and do things totally non electronically.

even my bank manager can't figure out why a lot of purchases are pending.. My balance is supposed to account for ALL pending charges... so if it says $4.. that is after all your pendings are even accounted for.. but then he was saying that wasn't always true and retailers do strange things too. I think the online banking USED to be more straight forwardd and direct. NOW they are definitely screweing around a lot more .. holding on to charges.. if you return something they hold on to things.. it is a nightmare.

I thought that overdraft fees were normal and that the bank really didn't know how much money was in your account. This was 15 years ago. Then I moved to Asia and if the money is not in the account you can't buy something. At that point in time I realized it's a scam. If Asia can do it America definitely should be able to know how much money is in your account

You get charged both by the bank that actually owns the ATM as well as your own bank for not using theirs! The only reason I know this is I have an account that refunds them (limited time/amount per month), but it specifies different limits for each category. It's usually enough to allow 2 per month with no problem, but it was still interesting to find that out!

back in the '90s, I had an overdraft of 10 cents. I went to the bank, argued the charge. they said my "back up" credit card wouldn't accept a 10 cent charge. I said I was DONE - "I'm cancelling my account" (I _might_ have used more stern language in that moment ... but you get the gist, I think) they said I COULDN'T close the account unless I paid the 10 cents. I've been depositing a single penny into the account every fifth year - just to keep it from reverting to the state. it now exists as "minus 4 cents"

My bank will instantly process debit card transactions and so at any moment if I want to KNOW how much money I have, in order to not spend what I don't have, I can instantly check. The problem is "ACH" transactions which use the bank account and routing number and aren't done through a debit card. Those can take days to process and the bank totally knows it's happening but doesn't tell YOU it's happening until they randomly decide "okay it's happened." How in 2023 it takes days for numbers to move across the internet, I have no idea. If a debit card transaction can happen instantly, why are ACH transactions so freakin' slow? So you'll look at your bank account and see $100 but actually you only have $25 because a $75 transaction is 'pending' AND THE BANK KNOWS IT but doesn't tell YOU about it so you think you have $100 but you don't. Then you spend $26 and suddenly the entire world falls apart and you owe the bank hundreds of dollars more than you actually spent on anything. Overdraft charges should be illegal. You should only owe what you actually spent, and if the bank doesn't want to let you spend what you don't have on credit, then they should just refuse the charge.

so, my bank also does these advances.. and for a small fee you can advance yourself some money. The fee is actually not that bad.. highest was around 5 dollars. (it was a percentage). I mostly have the money to pay the big bills which always goes first but things happen. You need gas, an unexpected whatever... So what I would prefer to happen is to have the bank warn you, YOU on't have enough enough... do you want to advance yourself.. and you would advance the amount for a lower fee.

Used to work at a bank, and constantly got yelled at for this. If one kept a register of their account, it could be avoided, but because doing so is considered old fashioned, its easy to lose track. Banks are not responsible whether you track your balance or not. It is evil to tier your purchases, but it'd be a non factor if you stopped yourself from making a purchase you know you didn't have the funds for.

Edit: I did leave that national bank that has now been inhaled and destroyed by another national bank
@pistonhonda21
@pistonhonda21 Жыл бұрын
@AdrianneJH Part of what I did was handle disputes of your nature. If your teller receipt showed that you made a deposit without a hold (we were legally obligated to tell you if there is a hold placed) or an electronic deposit registered to your acct that same business day, I would have reversed all associated overdraft fees, as long as the ledger balance showed positive at the end of business day. In all my time there, never once had that proven to be the case. It was always either a small purchase or automatic withdrawal (for example, a gym fee) that snowballed the account. In the case of fraudulent charges, all fees were always reversed. If the customer deposited a check that bounces a few days later, and debit card purchases create overdrafts, that is on the customer. Your endorsement legally obligates you to take ownership of the deposited item.

In Europe you don't pay fees per "overdraft" but per how much you're over the limit ... it's interest. It's expensive, like 10-15% depending on the bank but it's not on a per purchase basis. That said ... how can you not notice you're spending more than you have. Just take a peek into your banking app and just get the basics instead of caviar and gold plated ice cream.

@dahhmlife It's not always called 'Courtesy Pay', it depends on the credit union. Most credit unions have an overdraft program. What they can't do is structure transactions to maximize fees. They also can't automatically offer this service. You have to opt in on a separate form, containing only the overdraft info (it can't be combined/ buried in fine print).

I stopped having overdrafts, when I stopped being an irresponsible 20 something adult, and became a dad. "Overdrafts," aren't small annoyances, they are mistakes made by the account holder. ("Floating a check" is a gamble the account holder makes.) Don't write checks you can't cash! And don't spend money you don't have. And KNOW your bank account's fees and benefits. Some banks deny a charge, instead of overdrafting...if you get the right kind of account. Some will cover the charge for a grace period. KNOW what your bank is doing for you!

Overdraft Fees can kick off a *brutal* chain reaction. There is a 2nd chance for Banks to try again, the customer can be charged (a maximum of) 2 times for the same check. THEN the payee of the check is charged for the returned check, so that's usually passed on to the person writing the check (if you're keeping track, that's 3 separate charges for one bad check). I worked at a Bank before college, I know how evil they can be and they do it to the people who usually don't have time to fight back or don't know what is being done to them. It's all about the profits.

Our credit union calls this ‘over draft protection’; the way they clear charges vs checks is criminal.

I had a credit union that started charging acct maintenance fees. So years after I opened an account, they added fees to my "paperless" account. If they informed me it would have been online and probably sent to a discarded email address. I had less than $300 in the account and I was just letting it sit. Long story short, the maintenance fees cleared out my inactive account and left me with a balance due. I guess I got lucky though b/c they closed the account "for inactivity" when the overdraft for maintenance fees reached $100. Fees they then wrote off on their taxes. I'd actually forgotten about the account until I drove by the branch one day.

I worked at a credit union where I was able to refund overdraft fees without a manager approval.. best believe I refunded every single fee I came across. I would do so many I’d end up getting written up but that didn’t stop me cause eff that classist ish

My Credit Union runs the checks and drafts through at night BEFORE the deposits (such as my paycheck) which is totally backwards and unethical.

I made the mistake of mentioning to a "Customer Service" ska*k which day I get paid, the money has never been in my account early ever since that day.

In the Netherlands the bank gives me credit for almost one month of fixed income.They do charge between 1 and 2% interest per month but that is less than the money I pay for using a ATM in a foreign country.

I had a bank do that rearranging trick to me in the early 80s so that's been around for a long time. Fortunately I went to the bank and got it lowered to one fee.

They took away my entire months rent as a student and when i asked them why they didnt inform me, they said i would lve been emailed (at a time when i didnt have a smart phone amd was traveling)..and the guy handed me a 10 dollar starbucks card..i wish i had the guts to fight it out..i didnt know i could have gotten them to waive it off.. i was just afraid to get in trouble while studying in a foreign land..

I was not surprised in the least to see Chase right at the beginning of the video. Years back when I was broke (I mean broker than I am now, like..broke, broke. Like when the leftovers smell " , close enough" broke), even when I received money the bank would process all of my out payments, charge me overdraft, and THEN process my deposits. I invented whole new curse words on days like that. Oh, and on top of that, they knew when I was getting low on cash. so they would keep payments pending for days until they piled up so they could get the whole $105. I miss ING bank.

Started a long time before 1990s; at least since 1970s. Now you can get charged for a negative balance. My bank of 25 years did it for 21 cents (and didn't pay the debit)

honestly though, if you really have to pay for something and are willing to pay the 35 fee, say like electric bill or rent, it's a small price to pay. because not having power in 100 degree weather is far more costly than 35$. that is of course till the banks get too greedy and charge you more than you can ever pay, so there needs to be a balance somewhere.
