Because a lot of people are pointing it out. This video was made before the insane increase of used car prices. Some of these cars have creeped above the 15k mark. Some of the GXs are going for over 20k. These cars are still really good value for the money but just not that all cars have increased in price since I first uploaded this video.

WHAT ABOUT FORD AN DODGE HEAVY DUTY EX CAB SIX FOOT BED 4X4 ? I NO THE NEWER ONES ARE WAY TO BIG. BUT WHAT ABOUT THE OLDER ONES? THEYLL CRUSH EVERTHING YOU NAMED ON THIS VIDEO FOR OVER LANDING. FOR ONE THERE HEAVY DUTY AN THAT PRETTY MUCH MEAN YOUR GONNA HAVE TO DO A WHOLE LOT TO BREAK IT. YOULL PRETTY MUCH BE ABLE TO HAUL AN TOW WHAT YOU WANT. MOST TRUCKS AN SUV I SEE THAT ARE FOR OVER LANDING THERE PRETTY MUCK OVER LOADED. IF YOU SEE AN REALLY NICE OVER LAND VEHICLE IT PRETTY MUCH HAVE AN HEAVY DUTY DRIVE TRAIN. SO WHY NOT BUY AN ALL READY HEAVY DUTY VEHICLE? ITS WAY CHEAPER TO ADD LOCKERS AN BUY ALL THE OTHER LITTLE THINGS YOU NEED. NOW SUBURBAN ARE AWESOME THE HEAVY DUTY ONES ARE THE BEST. LETS NOT FOR GET THE FORD EXCURSION. WHY? BECAUSE ITS HEAVY DUTY. ALL THAT WELL THEYLL EAT UP A LOT OF GAS. IF YOU BUY AN UNDER POWERED VEHICLE IT WILL YOU JUST AS MUCH GAS AND BE STRUGGLING AT THAT.

This is a very good listing. I like that you weren't biased to a particular manufacturer or Import vs. domestic. These are almost exactly what I would recommend. Some might think i'm crazy, but I would honestly add in a Subaru Forester. Early 2000's model that is. They are so much more capable than people realize. It will never compete with a built larger vehicle for large obstacles, but with basic mods it is easily a top contender and extremely reliable vehicle. They are used in Australia very frequently, and I believe we can all agree that they have some intense terrain.
@OXFOOT

Yeah now that the used car market is going back to normal I want to do more lists like this. Forester might make its way onto one of the lists. I had a 2014 forester for a while and I could do a lot in it… just didn’t have that low range which is the main reason I went to the 4Runner.

I drive a 2005 Mitsubishi Montero Limited. I put on a 2-inch lift kit (Lovells springs and Bilstein shocks), and swapped out the 4.3 diffs for 4.9 diffs (rear Hybrid LSD) from a 2001 Montero XLS. Those minor enhancements along with its already great ActiveTrac 4wd system make it a beast off-road.

One of the forgotten offroaders? Isuzu Trooper and Rodeo/Amigo/P'Up. I had a 93 Trooper RS, and currently have a '02 Rodeo with only 74K miles. I paid $1800 for it, leaving me lots of cushion for upgrades. The primary issue with these Isuzu's are the automatic transmissions. But I only have the 5 speed manuals. If you are handy with a wrench then they are great budget builds/trucks. I've had XJs, Zjs, and AMC J10. I landed on Isuzus because they are abundant, cheaper than dirt, and the driving characteristics and interior remind me most of 3rd gen 4Runners.
@OXFOOT

I was going to say the same thing! I have had 2 Troopers, and they easily would get you there and back! I'm a scorpion biologist, so I really get into some crazy places! My 1994 RS was super rare, only 5000 built in a 3-year run! And I also had a '95 4dr LS. Excellent engines and off-road capability! I now have a 3rd gen 4runner that I love but not as much as the 2dr RS.

Love my 2005 Gen 3 Montero. $5k and you can find one with low-ish mileage and great maintenance history. Reliable, capable, and timeless design. Have to drive one to really appreciate it. View, driving position, and interior space are unmatched. Put an Elocker on, a lift and some tires, and you'll keep up with trucks 3-4× the price. Not to mention you'll be the only Montero on the road. Also, parts are surprisingly not too hard to come by for how rare they are. Best pro: You can drive JDM and avoid the Toyota Tax. Gen 2's are even cooler IMO. But, they are even more rare, and they are getting older so if you find one it'll likely need some love, but what truck doesn't.
@OXFOOT
@OXFOOT 3 жыл бұрын
I love the way they look. I have a huge thing for 90s/00’s styling, very much a 90s JDM guy from off-roaders to fast cars. I think that the montero really hit that styling on the head. Both times. Honestly the last generation is what I think the original 5th Gen 4Runner 10-13’ was made to resemble. It’s just a solid all around looking vehicle.
@OXFOOT
@OXFOOT 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t know why they are so rare though.
@MFRiley
@MFRiley 3 жыл бұрын
@@OXFOOT No doubt! The 3rd Gen is a pretty truck, even stock. But I have a lift, AT's, a bull bar, roof rack, and I removed the running boards.. Really takes it to the next level and I still find myself looking back to admire it months into ownership. The 2nd gen is just pure 90's rugged utilitarian. Plus the interior, while not as spacious, is equally as cool, with all of its gauges and knobs. They are so rare because they stopped shipping them to the U.S. in 2006. Poor sales I guess. They were still pretty popular in Australia and other places until they discontinued them this year. I bought mine mostly because they're so damn cheap, but I've grown to love it no matter how much they cost. Honestly the only trucks I'd consider replacing it with would be an older GX470, or Land Cruiser, and they are 2-3× the price.

I had a 1995 Gen 2 Pajero, the JDM version of the Montero with the 6G74 v6 DOHC and god it was a monster. All leather interior, lots of room, center locking diff and man I got it for 3K while stationed out in Guam with about 72,000 miles and in damn near mint condition. Unfortunately, a super typhoon rolled through and it got a ton of rust from all of the salt water so it wasn't going to be coming to the states. My favorite vehicle I've ever driven.

Throwing some love for the Nissan Pathfinder. It's a couple thousand cheaper than an Xterra. Has a 3rd row of seats but independent rear suspension which is the compromise. Still can be lifted easily, has a roof rack and a brake locking system like ATRAC. It shares the frame and front end with Xterra/Frontier. I live in Atlantic Canada where a good chunk of the vehicles on this list don't exist, because anything 15 years old is in the junkyard covered in rust, so when the choice was something 10 years old and $10k, Pathfinder was the only one to make the list.
@OXFOOT
@OXFOOT 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t disagree. I think even during this crazy price hike of most off-roaders there are a few that didn’t really go up too much and the pathfinder is one of them.

Nice to see the Sidekick get some attention. Hugely underrated off-road capabilities - short wheel base, relatively high clearance, narrow body, the wheels as close to the corners as possible for entry and departure angles, small 4 cylinder - but also very light. I had a (97?) Chevy Geo Tracker (built in parallel with Suzuki Sidekick). Underpowered for the highway, but it could go nearly anywhere. My daughter slid on ice and put into the ditch one very snowy day on her way to school. When I say “in” I don’t mean tires - the entire vehicle was sitting in the wide and deep drainage ditch. I got there about the same time as the state trooper who was getting ready to call a wrecker to pull it out. I told him I’d drive it out. He told me “no way.” I put it in 4W low and crawled up and out of the ditch with almost no spinning. He just shook his head. I always called it “the goat” - not “greatest of all time”, but because it would climb and go like a mountain goat without all the tire spinning and “momentum” attacks the bigger rigs use.
@OXFOOT
@OXFOOT 3 жыл бұрын
It’s honestly one of the best offroad vehicles made. It couldn’t be more perfect. I think they still make something similar in a ton of countries that aren’t the US. Like the Jimney or jimmy or something. The wheel base is perfect but yeah the engine with any larger tires just isn’t a great combination.

The first generation Ford Explorer is an excellent option for off road also. They're surprising off road even in stock form with 235 75 R 15 tires but adding 30x9.50R15's or 31x10.50R15's is a quick and instant upgrade for clearance.

@@OXFOOT I've owned 3, still have 2 '93's one stock XLT and one with 9" s of lift on 35's with 4.56:1 axle ratios and lockers front and rear. I also now have 2 Bronco II's which are unstoppable little beasts off road. They all sorta took a black eye over rollovers which were 95% caused by driver error. The 2nd Generation Explorer with the IFS with the batch of bad Firestone tires also didn't help but I really only like the first generation with the TTB axles as it's a good mix of IFS and solid axle and soaks up the road well on and off road.

Lots of Frontier parts are exchangeable with the Titan's stronger parts because they share very similar frames so everything like suspension bolts right up.

My incredibly biased vote is the XJ I own a 99 with the 4.0 it’s pretty damn good. I take it camping and even drive it around town a lot. It’s easy to maintain and I’ve been able to fix things with basic tools when I’m out on trails. Even on stock ride height with some nice AT tires you can do some fun things. My only complaint is the overheating living in California with the heat it did tend to over heat but there are some good kits available to fix cooling issues. Highly recommend the XJ for people not only getting into overlanding but also to learn working on cars.

@OXFOOT you should do tier list videos. They're mainly voice-overs and simple search video clips. For example, you can do tier lists of not just vehicles but also of equipment as well. Quick cash, in my opinion. And try to keep it at no more than 10 examples. A KZbinr named Yammie noob blew up off of top 10s. And all he talks about is motorcycles. Dont be yourself be a character. Maybe a goofier or more entertaining version of yourself. James Humpfrey from Donut media blew up from screaming "mo POWA BABY!!" and acting like a retard-hick-bro version of his self. Found a 97 Gen 2 Montero LS (no rearlockers just center) with a good maintenance record for 5k in the beginning of 2022 (had to drive 8 hours just to get it). These are still pretty cheapish but rare to find. Aftermarket isn't as big as the others but it is manageable. Even at high mileage (200k) I haven't ran into any issues. Engines will last about 300K if maintenance is upkept. I will say they are slow on road but man do the shine off-road! One of the best parts is you avoid that Toyota Tax. You also get that rare factor because I never see them driving around as much (I've seen 2 driving around and 1in the scrap yard). 100% worth the buy and would do it again.

A little insight on the monteros. On the Gen 2 monteros (92-97) you are looking for the "SR" model (92-97). You can tell them apart because they have fender flares. I would stay away from the early (92-93) SR because they only had a 3.0 V6 with 150hp. However, they still had the air locking rear diff with 4.63 gears and all of the interior commodities. 94-96 gen 2 is considered the most desirable gen 2 because of its DOHC 3.5l V6 that makes 215hp. They also have a factory body lift and kept the rear locker and 4.63 gears. 97 is a bit different although aesthetically the same as the other gen 2s. The 97 had a SOHC 3.5 that is much easier to work on than the DOHC but makes only 200hp. And while it still has the locking rear, it had 4.27 gears which limits you to 33s. Whereas the 4.63s are good with 35s and makes the rig a bit more peppy. Now onto gen 2.5s (98-2000). These all had 4.27 gears with the SOHC 3.5 but only the "winter package" of the 98/99 had the air locker. 2000s did not have the air locker option. No way to tell from the outside, but the winter package had heated leather seats and a big orange sticker located in the right knee area of the drivers position. Basically telling you how to use the locker. all of the gen 2/2.5s were solid rear with a torsion bar IFS. Now gen 3 monteros (2001-2006). All Gen 3s are IFS and IRS. 2001 and 2002 are 3.5 SOHC shared with the later gen 2s. The "limited" model of 01 and 02 had mitsus traction control system that is very good. 2003 and newer had the 3.8l SOHC V6 that makes 215hp and a bit more torque than the old 3.5. All 2003s and newer had the traction control system. Check My channel out for some montero action!

The GXs as well. Idk what Toyota was doing with their frames in the mid 2000s. Actually I do kinda remember they did something like C Frame or something that caused more rust but I don’t exactly remember. Almost bought a 1st Gen tundra but all the ones I saw in my price range were rusted.

I’ll personally vouch for the TJ though as I owned and wheeled 3 of those. I still miss my 2000 TJ which I had for 10 years. Also, people may look for the LJ (the longer wheelbase TJ that was still a 2 door) as that’s a sought after Jeep... but they’re not cheap and it’ll be hard to find one under 15k I think. Now ypu have people asking 18k for a 200k 4x4 that isn't even that nice. If you go to a 2015 or so then they want 20-25k. My brother needed just any truck and ended up spending about 8-9k on a 2wd Chevy with a V6. He had been looking for 2 months and ran out of time and it was the nicest one for the price that looked like it wasn't beat to hell.
