Resident Evil 2 was supposed to get a Saturn port back in '98 but they canceled it since the system was pretty much dead by then, but at least the Dreamcast got the definitive ports of RE2+3.

Reloaded also got cancelled on the Saturn. It was nearly completed and there was even a playable demo that appeared on a cover disc on a issue of Saturn Power magazine back in 1997. Syndicate Wars, Heart Of Darkness, Abe Oddysee were also cancelled on the Saturn too.

Yeah, makes sense that they would want to port it to the Saturn. I know an N64 version was cancelled as well. The original design document (when it was still called Race 'N' Chase) says it was planned for DOS, Windows, PlayStation, Saturn, and Ultra 64.

Then now GTA 2 is ported on the Dreamcast and it's the First GTA game being ported on the Sega gaming console. GTA 1 would be the first original GTA game ported on Sega console Saturn before the Dreamcast.

Being able to experience levels from Sonic Xtreme today through demos is awesome. It's great to see what could have been. Some really interesting games there that sadly never saw the light of day. I remember Shenmue starting out on the Saturn, it looks really good. Sonic the Fighters is a really cool game and it's great that we were eventually able to play it on the PlayStation 2 via the Sonic Gems Collection. There also was a port of Virtua Fighter 3 that was reportedly completed, but was cancelled by Sega just before it came out for duplication, probably to keep the exclusivity for the upcoming Dreamcast. There is no demo or whatsoever in the wild, but there are a few videos of prototypes that can be found of it.

I'm surprised to hear about a few of these, some seemed pretty cool. I was definitely anticipating Sonic X-Treme and Sonic Championship back in the day, though. I was drunk on Sega kool-aid as a kid, and even during the Saturn years they could still do no wrong... I was holding my breath for a bunch of first-party titles that never materialized (Scud Race was another, along with my hopes of a Dreamcast home version of Daytona 2), and it's even more frustrating to think of "what could have been" all these years later :c
@onaretrotip6 жыл бұрын
That's awesome. Sadly the Saturn completely passed me by back in the day - I didn't know a single person who had one, so never played on one. I'm making up for it in recent years though!
@AGwolf20976 жыл бұрын
Nice. Tons of people out there will say the Saturn was only good for imports, but there were still a lot of great games that were released here in the US and in Europe. I'm not a big fan of shmups or fighting games, so I suppose there "shouldn't" be anything I actually enjoy on the system... but my 80+ USA collection says otherwise. I WILL say, if you're just getting into Saturn now, do NOT pay the exorbitant prices some high-profile games are fetching (Burning Rangers, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Magic Knight Rayearth, etc)... some just aren't worth it unless you're absolutely dedicated. Learn how to do the CDR swap-trick (easier on newer models, tougher on the older ones), flash a gameshark or InterAct memory card with Pseudo-Saturn, install a CDR modchip, or hold out for a Rhea/Phoebe SD card adapter... the Saturn does have a lot of great games, many of which are in the sub-$30 range, but some of the more expensive games aren't worth the price if you don't know whether you like them in advance.
@onaretrotip6 жыл бұрын
I have a psuedo-flashed AR cart, but I still buy the games despite the high prices. I do shop around a lot though. Some of the shooters are silly though, as I begrudge spending over £100 on a game, so those are perfect for just burning copies. I'm not a huge fan of RPGs on the system as I don't have the time to play them, so it's generally shooters, fighters, and arcade games for me.
@VOAN6 жыл бұрын
I know that a lot of original Sonic games developed for the Sega Saturn were cancelled, my only complaint is why they decided to port Sonic 3D Blast to the Saturn instead of Sonic CD? Everyone I know who own a Sega Genesis also wanted to buy a Sega Saturn at the time and had Sonic CD were port to the Saturn, that would had kinda help the Saturn a lot since not many Genesis owners that I know of own a Sega CD and had never play Sonic CD before. As we all know there were a few Sega CD games that either got ported or remake for the Sega Saturn such as Lunar 1 & 2, Snatcher and Corpse Killer, Sonic CD would had been a great addition.
@onaretrotip6 жыл бұрын
That's a great point. I only knew one person at school back in the day who had a Mega CD (and his parents were rich). A Sonic CD port would have been in high demand if it were to have a Saturn release.

Alien Odyssey from Martin Piper : Alien Odyssey. Yes I was working on the Saturn port alongside porting MAD video compression to the Saturn from the PC. MAD Video (Martin and Dave Video) compression was something a colleague and I had cooked up in out spare time while sharing a flat. It started life on the Archimedes and then ported to the PC at which point we sold the technology to Argument. It produced better visual results than AVC used on Creature Shock. This was in the day when typical home PCs couldn't decode MPEG in realtime so that's why other video compression systems existed in software. Anyway, it was about 50% complete when the plug was pulled. Don't recall why exactly. I was moved onto BRender projects at the time. This was when Argonaut was working with SGI to produce Firewalker which was a games development suite. Now that is a piece of gaming history and a whole story in itself.

Reading through an old interview with Capcom, (around time Sega had just annouced the Dreamcast) and it threw up a few interesting points: 1)Saturn Resident Evil 2 (or Biohazard 2 in Japan), Capcom said it WOULD'NT have been impossible to do, nor would it needed the 4MB Ram cart, as Ram was'nt the issue, 2 key things stopped it happening: The 1st, Sega annoucing the Dreamcast and that they (Sega) were no onger working on Saturn games-Capcom felt that people would stop buying Saturn games as it was seen as being a 'dead' console and also retailers would start clearing shelves of Saturn games, to replace with something else (this also meant Capcom would'nt be converting any more CPS II games to Saturn). The 2nd issue was that Capcom were struggling to get the top performance from the Saturn's CPU, (something they admit Sega's own internal team had managed) and as a result, the CPU speeds they were getting, were too slow to handle the 'graphics calculations' Res Evil 2 needed, as it was on PS1. So, they were'nt going to re-code Res.Evil 2 for Saturn, when Sega had just pulled the plug on it
@themeangene Жыл бұрын
Good post. The Saturn technically has more memory than the Playstation so the 4 MB cartridge would have honestly been pointless unless they were planning to add more to the Sega port. The Saturn has 2 MB of RAM and 1.5 MB of VRAM and you could find even more space on the 6800x and SCP. The Saturn is slower if you only use one of its CPUs. I imagine Capcom was consulting with Sega on how to get the slave processor to perform some tasks. The original Resident Evil was ported directly to the Saturn without trying to optimize it. It could have definitely been done especially since Capcom had to squeeze the second game into 64 MB of cartridges for Nintendo. I realize the N64 had the fastest processor (around 90 MHZ) but games like Nights and Burning Rangers prove the Saturn can handle complicated code. Burning Rangers had REAL TIME LIGHTING.
@Swordslinger-hb1ns7 ай бұрын
There was supposedly a Sega Saturn port of Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls Arena that was cancelled. That’s insane considering the scope and size of that game. I don’t think even help from the 4 meg RAM cart can run that game.

@themeangene Жыл бұрын
I love this video. Resident Evil 2 would not have needed a memory expansion. I realize that was discussed but that's mostly because the Saturn loaded from the disc slightly slower. Even officially the Saturn has 2 MB of RAM and 1.5 MB of VRAM which is 0.5 MB more than the Playstation. And unofficially you can use the sound chip and the SDP for a few more kilobytes of memory. Capcom was just unfamiliar with the architecture. On the first RE port they didn't even try to optimize it for the master-slave CPU. Hell they didn't even change the character models into quads which would have saved memory and allowed more transparency. It really sucks that the Saturn was being abandoned in 97-98 because so many 3D optimization tricks were just being invented.
@onaretrotip Жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yeah, it's a shame that developers found the Saturn's architecture so complicated.
@thefurthestmanfromhome11489 ай бұрын
@@onaretrotipCapcom also stated how frustrated they were with Sega keeping the latest development tools and libraries for themselves, so in-house Saturn titles looked better than third party titles, which didn't make for a great realationship between the 2.

@onaretrotip6 жыл бұрын
As far as I know it was planned for PC, Amiga, PlayStation, Saturn, and Jaguar, but was cancelled for all.
@ObscurityCentral4 жыл бұрын
1: Witchwood was indeed most likely cancelled because of Ocean's doubts of its appeal rate, for I can't find any other sources for other reasons. All I did find was that the only game they did release in 2246 RE was X2 for the PS1 (Another Cancelled Saturn Game). However, Ocean only had the rights to publish that in Europe. While Capcom acquired the publishing rights for Japan & Acclaim got the rights for North America (For both versions). However, Acclaim refused to release the game in the region because they withdrew their support for Sega & just thought that the PS1 sales were lucrative & the reviews for the PAL release were absolutely negative, harming Ocean's reputation & Acclaim didn't want to sink with the ship. 4: Rollcage's cancelation is indeed unknown for all 3 systems in mind, but I got my hunches. The Panasonic 3DO console was cancelled in 2246 RE (Suck It Christianity & Islam! How come yes for your calendars, but no for everyone else?) for obvious reasons, which would make it no surprise for the 3DO port to be cancelled. So why didn't the PS1 & Saturn ports make the cut? The Saturn Port was most likely cancelled due to Ocean's disdain for the system or Sega being morons once again. (For Ocean did publish every Team 17 game released in 2246, so it's a fair assessment that it would be them publishing it & in the year 2246 (3DO) & 2247 for PS1 & SS! As for Sega, they're notorious for their mishandling of their marketing strategies in the 90s) Now the PS1 port on the other hand was the closest to being released, but was most likely shot down by Sony for being too boring & uninspired for the 90s had an oversaturation of Racing Games, which was usually hit or miss sales-wise. It's also possible that either Team 17 or Ocean just gave up on the game either out of boredom or due to some setback. 9: Scud Race's Saturn port was cancelled in favor of the Dreamcast in a similar fashion to Shenmue & Sonic Adventure especially since the Saturn was a lost cause by this point (Sorry Saturn but it's true). The Dreamcast port was cancelled simply by Sega's stupidity again for the only conclusion I could forsee is them not seeing value in the Project. At this point, I feel like this trip down memory lane is wearing itself thin. Makes me lose hope in Sega as a Company *cough.... Genesis Mini... cough*. 11: According to a retrospective interview with Yojiro Ogawa circa 2265, Sonic Championship was cancelled for the Saturn for the system couldn't handle the Arcade cabinet's CPU engine & it would have to be watered down drastically (similar to Virtual Fighter 2 on Genesis) just to release it there. They tried this, but they came across various development issues along the way that would cause the project to crash during testing. It also didn't help that only Sega of Japan was willing to move forward with its release, for the port was delayed to July 1997 with an international release during that fall season. 1997 was the same year Sega of North America chose to abandon the Saturn, with Sega of Europe following close behind them. They thought about trying again for the Dreamcast, but decided to wait & see how other Sonic titles & fighting games performed 1st. The green light was later given, but development switched over to the Gamecube & PS2 upon the Dreamcast's discontinuation! That version is a complete converted emulation of the Arcade, while any work done for the newly developed Saturn port was immediately scrapped! As for why only the Gamecube version was released in North America? Simply because of an exclusivity deal Sega had with Nintendo for certain titles in the region, for Nintendo bribed Sega to keep non Nintendo ports of certain Sega games outside of the region. Microsoft did something similar regarding Shenmue 2. The game was later enhanced & re-released for the PS3 & 360 in 2262 with PS3 getting the PS2 port (No Duh!) & 360 getting the Gamecube port. By this point, the exclusivity deal Nintendo had with Sega had expired for the games in question especially since the Classic Wii didn't get the enhanced version in favor of the 360. 12: Fighting Force's Saturn port was indeed completed & Eidos had the rights to release it, but felt burned by Sega & refused to release it to the public. Sega of Europe managed to buy the Publishing rights to the game & tried to release it in November 1997. However, they changed their minds when Sega of North America chose to ditch the Saturn & thought it was a better idea to move forward with the Dreamcast too. Also, it was Core Design's parent company "Eidos" that pushed for the game to be released on PS1 & later N64 & not Core Design themselves. They wanted it multi-platform really badly for money, but like you said... Sega refused & stripped the rights from them. But what you didn't say was that Sega then chose to continue SOR4 for Dreamcast.

There was a painfully huge amount of Saturn games that never made it out. I bought Saturn Fan from the July 1995 issue through to 2002 when it was Dreamcast Fan. I saw many games in those mags that never made it. One of the one's I most wanted back in the day was an awesome looking RPG from DATA EAST called Dragon's Heaven. Damn it looked nice. Like a beefed up SuFami game and kinda Dragon Quest-ish. Last time it was shown, it was 25% complete and then it just disappeared, never to be seen again :(

Another gorgeous looking NEC Interchannel game from around the same time as Monster Maker was a Saturn port of Dragon Knight IV. Those MM pics are frim Saturn Fan. ELF also announced a Saturn version of Dragon Knight and Words Worth, but only concept art for Dragon Knight was ever shown in Saturn Fan. Words Worth never even got a feature article. I always thought that the Saturn Dragon Knight became Words Worth but I coukd be wrong.
