In this episode of Cancelled Games we're looking at ten of the many unreleased arcade games that have disappeared into the ether over the years.
If anyone knows of any more that have any media (videos, images, etc) available, then please let me know. I'd love to do a follow-up.

Here's a little side note about Albegas. It was also supposed to be part of the Voltron continuity. When Matchbox and World Events announced the toy line, they had three versions of Voltron based on the universes they were in. The most well known version (Lion Force) was Voltron III (of the far universe) while the lesser known Vehicle Voltron, based on Dairugger XV, was Voltron I (of the near Universe.) Albegas was to be known as Voltron II, or Gladiator Voltron, but due to the poor reaction of Vehicle Voltron compared to Lion Voltron, plans for Albegas were eventually scrapped, so it wasn't just the laser disc game where something Albegas related was scrapped.

I had an opportunity to play one of the Dredd test cabinets in Chicago, at an arcade called Dennis' Place for Games (RIP Dennis). It wasn't all that bad, tbh. Hit detection was rough and it definitely needed better animation but with some fine-tuning, I think it would've been decently received. In some regards, it reminded me a lot of NARC. And as rough as the digitized graphics look, it's important to keep in mind that games like Pit Fighter were still in arcades back then, so that presentation wasn't bad for its time.

A note about Albegas: In the United States, World Event Productions, the company that had the cartoon and toy distribution rights to Lion and Vehicle Voltron, had been eyeing the Albegas anime as a third season of Voltron. The Judge Dredd game isnt too bad, with some work it would have been fun. Primal Rage 2 IS finally playable, albeit on a custom MAME build. Plays like a bit clunkier Night Warriors with special canceling, and if it too had work, it'd had been a worthy rival to Darkstalkers.

I find myself fascinated by this one arcade game called Asylum. It's clear the creators must have thought it was going to blow the doors off the arcades since it offered secret codes for Asylum merchandise upon finishing it - it just didn't get released for whatever reason. Besides how weird and violent the game was I don't know why exactly, also it was to be released at a time when weird and violent games were prevalent. The unreleased game had some really obvious bugs, weird hit detection and was curiously short. It's a hell of a ride while it lasts.

The latter kinda hurts, because that means that we would've a full 3D model of Demitri. Also an odd choice, in crossovers, Demitri is the last choice, possibly because of Midnight Bliss... Leo from War-Zards, 20. Ran from Nekketsu Seisyun Nikki 2, 21. Batsu from School Rivals, 22. Biff from Muscle Bomber, 23. Kyo from The King of Fighters '94 (exclusive Arcade character), 24. June from Stat Gladiator, 25. Black Hayato from Star Gladiator 2, 26. Ryu from Street Fighter, 27. Vega from Street Fighter II, 28. Cammy from Super Street Fighter II, 29. Rose from Street Fighter Zero, 30. Sakura from Street Fighter Zero 2, 31. Karin from Street Fighter Zero 3, 32. Alex from Street Fighter III, 33. Urien from Street Fighter III 2nd Impact, 34. Twelve from Street Fighter III 3rd Strike, 35. Demitri from Vampire, 36. Donovan from Vampire Hunter, 37. Bulleta from Vampire Savior, 38. Hero Trojan from Tatakai no Banka. 39. Nintendo's Sky Skipper. It didn't get an official release aside from a Atari 2600 port until recently for the switch. Apparently Factor 5 were instrumental in the preservation of the ROM. There's also video footage of Sunsoft's Vs Lionex for Nintendo's Vs arcade machines, but no ROM has been preserved. There are bits of Flea Pit preserved on the Pickford Bros.' website, a project that eventually became Plok for the SNES. Then there's Universal's Mrs. Dynamite. Nothing known exist but an arcade flyer with screenshots on it. It looks similar to Namco's Warp-Warp or Hudson's Bomberman. I assume it held some connection to Universal's Mr. Do franchise based on the name.

I remember a few of those being featured in Magazines. Especially that Judge Dredd game. I think I assumed that had come out to no reaction at all. Tattoo Fighter looks kinda abysmal. It started as an arcade game, Street Fighter EX, then they released an upgraded version called Street Fighter EX Plus. Plus Alpha is essentially the console version of that. Overall a nice collection of unreleased games, including a few I hadn't heard about. As for your Tattoo Assassins footage, the game doesn't play that sluggish on the arcade cabinet, and should run at full speed in MAME. As for unreleased games, check out Last Odyssey Pinball Fantasia for the NeoGeo. It's one game that I have always wanted to play. There are a few prototypes known to still exist out there, but they do not want to share the ROM.
