The interesting thing about mics like this, where the obvious goal is to make it LOOK like an SM57... but not necessarily trying to clone the sound of an SM57... is that they end up being compared in all ways to an SM57. Which brings up both inherent biases as well as reasons that the SM57 will win out (like build quality, reputation, known warranty, and that predictable sound). But what if the Weymic WM-57 opted for a less than 'copy' look about it? Maybe even getting rid of the '57' in the name too. Essentially, making itself stand more as a budget mic compared to other budget mics. Even compared to other more expensive mics. Let's face it, making mics in 2024 isn't rocket science. Questions about build quality might still be raised, but they'd be in comparison to its price. And in context of its sound. Many budget mics these days don't sound bad, just different. Nothing I heard in the review made the mic sound bad, just different. But by the same token, since it doesn't sound like an SM57, if you want an SM57, this is NOT it. So, they kind of set themselves up for a comparison they're not going to win by cloning the looks of the SM57. I suppose there's an easy aspect to marketing by just making a mic look like a more well-known mic, and hoping that by sounding 'fine' either users won't compare to the real thing, or not care if it's not a sonic clone. And then it can sell on price and looks. But I wonder if a bit of uniqueness in the looks, and some influencer marketing, and that budget price (with a tightening of QC issues (read: soldering) would actually sell a lot of mics where the comparison would simply be price vs sound alone. And where being 'different' than an SM57 wouldn't actually matter if it wasn't trying so hard to 'look' like an SM57...

I bought some and there’s some of the best mics I’ve ever used. All I did was buy resistors and put them in there tore the other Mika apart that he has all are the same inside. He is right it does not have a resistor. I recommend to buy themand modify them for half the price.

Shure does manufacture the SM57 in China. It may not be counterfeit in the sense that it's likely built in the same factory minus the transformer. It's rebranded essentially. At $100 Shure is definitely making a profit on the device. We all know that electronics don't cost as much as their retail price. Nothing out there is "ethical" per se. Shure isn't conforming to a Christian ethic. I don't think that we should be calling an amoral thing as potentially sin. If there was something unethical about it, Shure would've shut it down by now by pursuing legal action.

Yeah, I feel you on all that. I’m certainly not expecting Shure (or any other company for that matter) to act with any particular ethic. I will say though, I think it creates confusion and ultimately harms the audio industry. I’m sure that Shure would be perusing legal action if it were possible to do anything about it, but unfortunately in oversees patent litigations, there’s almost never a way to actual get any action taken against an infringing company. I would also say that this mic and other clones definitely don’t have the same quality that the real thing does. It’s definitely not from the same factory. The solder joints were AWFUL and one actually fell apart the next time I opened up the mic. My best advice is simply to not waste your money haha! 😂

@@WorshipSoundGuy I haven´t heard a big difference on low volume drums test i in this video, but I´ve heard a lot difference during voice test. There is one other guy testing another "brand" fake SM57, but he did test it on high sound pressure sound sources, too. There was a huge difference since the fake had definitely much lower maximum undistorted SPL....

Can't speak from experience on this mic but just bought my second Behringer 58 lookalike, again for

Durability is the hallmark of Shure. I've used SM-57 and SM-58s without any issue. I mean, they were subject to intense SPL for years, had their windscreen all dented up from drops and yet still performed. I'd invest in them anytime.

Absolutely! I agree 100%

There's more noise floor on the SM57. 😮

Isn't the transformer used for creating a balanced audio line?

I mean... besides the concerns of quality, the differences are fairly nuanced. I would rather someone on a budget pick up that mic as opposed to some terrible other choices at that price point. At the end of the day though, the SM57 is pretty darn cheap to begin with.

What if someone can’t afford to pay $100 for the SM57?
@ComradeTrotsky101715 күн бұрын
SM57 has better high end - and sounds louder, but you can adjust that in the mix. Honestly, for the price, the WM isn't bad at all. I'm actually amazed at the sound of that little thing. All of its "problems" which are subjective in the first place, can be handled in the DAW. I find your corporation worship troubling. Shure doesn't need the money - and we don't need your capitalist brand worship. I can imagine you saying, "You shouldn't steal from Walmart."

I had the real thing of this copy and it died on me for no apparent reason. I didnt drop ot out of a helicopter. Lol. I bought this weymic and to tell the truth, i really like it. I like the open sound on it as compared to its cousin. Ive tried it on snare, toms, vocals, and electrical guitar and may be getting a few more for my toms. Im no expert but i have been mixing and recording for 20 years so take my opinion with a grain of salt. As far as ethical/moral views....I guess I will burn in hell.
