The problem I see with suggesting a newer player add these powerful heat scores to their pre-cons is unless they also have a deck to back up an early Mana Crypt or Smothering, they'll put themselves on everyone's radar to their own detriment. There is inherent risk to stealing power from the table with these cards. Alternative video suggestion: 15 cards you can add to your pre-con that do work under the radar.

I feel like this list is more for Cedh and high power playgroups rather than newcomer edh players. These cards are the pinnacle of mana curve refinement when you absolutely need to have as many answers as possible with the lowest curve possible. Don't get me wrong, these are amazing cards and great in high power decks that want them, but not necessarily great for upgrading precons if that is where you are at in your magic journey. I'm fortunate enough to have played for many years and have all of these cards in multiples, but I'm not going to put them in a deck I know I would be playing at a lower power/beginner table. Some better examples might have been- counter spell Beast masters ascension Fellwar Stone Signets and talisman's Pyroblast Veil of summer Craterhoof behemoth Seedborne Muse Sign in blood Noxious revival Eladamri's call Grim tutor Archeomancer's map To name but a few. Edh rec doesn't differentiate between edh and cedh as far as the rankings go, nor does it consider power level. I would always suggest to new players that they look to broaden their collections 1st before dropping $1000 dollars on the 15 most powerful cards, some of which are incredibly situational. I would also suggest the look at the meta in their lgs/playgroup, see what is commonly played and take that into consideration. But keep up the great work. It's not often I'm not totally on board with your ideas. ♥️

Meanwhile, in CEDH the card is a powerhouse as games tend to end before the life losses even matter.

My suggestion is this--talk with your group, seriously, about allowing proxies of cards you already own. Almost any group will go for that; very few will go "open season" on proxies, but the consideration that moving cards between decks is a hassle is usually enough to win them over. Then, pick up powerful cards one by one. Pick up or make some proxies of each as you get them. Then you can amortize the cost, you didn't buy ONE card, you bought "infinite" copies of a card! It's like an unlock code for the game. It's how it works on MTGO, if you also want to use that argument to sway your friends.

This video is so wrong in many ways. New players do not need to waste their money on those cards there are cheaper staples. Begin with those...

If youre just getting into the game, do not fucking spend 1500$ on these staples. Get some signets and other land ramp for your colors before this lmao

I just think that cedh is ruining the spirit of edh and ppl cannot self govern their decks to stay edh instead of high powered or degenerate; thats the issue. To say these “should” be in your deck or collection is really a loaded term. Why should ppl play cards that aren’t healthy for the format, price players out the game, make for feel bad games, and the list goes on.

I very much disagree here. CEDH isn’t “ruining the spirit of edh” because it is part of the spirit of edh. EDH is the place where you do that degenerate stuff, you play cards you cant play anywhere else. They’re simply different ways of playing the game, nobody is forcing you to play these cards, nobody is forcing you to play cedh. Play the game the way you want to play. CEDH on the whole is very proxy friendly, so “pricing your opponents out” is much less of a thing there. There is no such thing as “staying edh” because cedh *is* edh.

@@possiblypigeon cedh is what happened when modern players came to edh and didnt like how slow it was, or its ppl that are too competitive for edh and want to make it a format it wasn’t intended to be. Edh isnt about playing cards that are banned in other formats; its a one of format meant to be less consistent and have more and longer interaction. My main issue is players who want to have fun, cant afford expensive cards, want jank combos, like to play budget, want to use unique commanders, want to use bulk to build decks, and so on, cannot show up for a normal pod and play since the base power of most deck is now an 8 or borderline cedh. That’s not right and especially not to new players; ppl want a fun game and normal pod of 5-7 (precon to optimized strategies). Also not everyone agrees with proxies and especially not everyone agrees ppl should be able to proxy a $5k deck amd invest nothing in real cards in order to win and make others have a feel bad game. That’s not the spirit of edh; if you like cedh thats fine, but dont force it on the format of edh or expect others to pod with you. I would definitely blame someone for bringing only high powered decks vs someone who has casual deck and no 8s and up; to expect ppl to want to play into that is bs.

@@returnoftheduelist9790 Nobody is “expected” to play edh in any way. Believe me, i play both sides of the format. The default deck isn’t an 8, it just may feel that way. Decks aren’t, by default, “borderline cedh” - it isn’t even close. The normal pod is casual, always has been and always will be. I believe your perception of things have just changed slightly. New players, and there are many currently, are allowed to play the game anyway they want - this hasn’t changed. I’m a relatively new magic player, started playing in 2020 and have only played edh. I’m not a modern player, i’m just someone that likes to combo sometimes. There is a very very very small minority of people who want to stomp people at a casual table, there’s nothing you can do about them unfortunately. You can still play budget, can still put as many restrictions as you want on regular play as you want. There is literally nothing stopping you from doing this.

@@possiblypigeon i too only play edh and since last year, i came from yugioh and i know broken when i see it lol. Just when mana crypt is in a normal pod along side mana vault and cards clearly for strong decks, then it’s definitely being power crept above an average pod. I co created a budget format called Warlord where its any commander but $100 restriction on the 99 besides basic lands. But this also showed optimized and fun decks can be made without those fast mana, free negate, or the worst...drannith magistrate like cards that make ppl feel bad. I have 2 decks id say are a 9, 1 deck at an 8 and then like 4 solid $100 budget decks. I have more fun and the pods are better when we play Warlord; when i see cedh players at a $100 table then i have a big issue with that and this is what goes on by me.

100$ for a card? Proxies are 1dollar.

15 cards to homogenize your deck building and make your deck into boring value piles. Instead of encouraging new players to play blatantly strong cards, I'd encourage new players to make decks with cards they like.
