#15 Ferguson TVO Ultrasonic clean of the Carb

Using an Ultrasonic cleaner for the first time to clean parts of the Zenith 24-T carburettor off the Ferguson TED20. This carburettor is a replacement one and some of the parts were quite mucky. The primary reason for using an ultrasonic cleaner was to get into the tiny passages and ports which are otherwise almost impossible to clean.

G Day Perrys, I use a bead blaster on my carbs and use the fine glass beads. I had wondered how those ultrasonics worked. To make sure the surfaces on the main adjoining bodies are smooth I sometimes rub them in a figure of 8 pattern on some fine, 400 or 600 wet and dry on a piece of glass like an old window pane. I dont think I have shown that on my videos but it works well. It does give nice smooth and true surfaces. The ventury should just pull straight out so you can do the surfaces.

Thanks Lance. I was wanting to do that, but don't seem to be able to get the venturi out no matter how hard I pull! It's the same on both carbs, which is odd. On the first I thought maybe someone had used some form of adhesive, but now the second is proving to be as difficult. I will try one more time and see if I can coax it out, because it would be good to get those surfaces nice and true.

I've only heard of Ultrasonic cleaners fairly recently Gordon. A friend took his chainsaw carburettor to have it cleaned. Then I heard they are relatively inexpensive and people are getting them. As you say, the best use is for the hidden parts, like the small inside jets of carbs, especially small modern ones. But all in all, I think yours did a fairly decent job and certainly made the hand cleaning easier.

Based on my experience in the oil and gas industry, ultrasonics does an excellent job of cleaning inside the ports that cannot be cleaned by hand, and therefore huge cost savings when overhauling valves coated in bitumen. The industrial equipment is much larger and expensive, but it works the same as your little GT Sonic unit. I would suggest placing a sheet of fine screen in the bottom of the basket to hold the small bits; the ultrasonic sound waves will easily work through the mesh.

Hi Charles, thank you for this. I now only use it for that type of application - cleaning small channels etc. I originally hoped it would help to loosen surface dirt, which it does do in small part probably mostly due to the heat, but not enough to justify the effort. So now I have a large heated tank which I use to soak dirty parts in and then it’s just usual elbow grease and wire brushing etc. of course some items can be sand blasted and that works quite well. Any how the ultrasonic has its purpose and I don’t regret buying it. It works particularly well on carburettors which I seem to do a lot of! 👍😉

@@WaterhouseForde I soaked my Marvel Schebler carburetor in CLR for at least 24 hours. After a rinse in solvent and spray with brake cleaner it was like new. Waiting for winter to go away before continuing on my TE20 project. The past few days in western Canada has been extremely cold at -37C overnight and -28C daytime temperature. Better weather is coming.

Damn that’s cold! I complain when we get down to just zero degrees!!
