You won't save money by making your clothes these days. But...it if you are well trained and practiced in the art, you will have better quality clothes, ones that fit, that suit you and that last. For instance, five years ago I got some gorgeous embroidered lace on sale at Joanne fabric. This was $90 a yard and I bought 6 yds with my 50% coupon so the lace only 270. With all the materials, pattern findings and work and time that went into it it cost in the neighborhood of $600. But not only was it my wedding dress, I've worn it to the symphony, the ballet, theater, another wedding (it is NOT white) and a murder mystery dinner. I could have bought a dress for between 150 and 200. It would not have been the superior fabric, would not have been as well made and wouldn't have fit (I'm 5" and a wheelchair user so the length has to be adjusted differently). I don't know if that frugal, it's about $100 per wearing so far but since it was my wedding dress, I feel like I really got good wear from it so far and it has plenty left in it.

I've never had success cooking fish at home, so that's what I often order when I go out. Another thing that goes along with the above, is buying some spice for a dish that you'll probably never prepare very often. I store my spices in the freezer, so they do preserve better than on the shelf. However, buying eg. fish sauce to make Asian food just isn't viable for me. Better to go to the Vietnamese or Thai restaurant once in a while, have it prepared properly, and enjoy it immensely.

I don’t have a garden in the US. I don’t do Coupons and I don’t chase deals; too much work and I buy what I don’t need. I don’t chase deals. I don’t have a car. I am a minimalist. No! I cannot do OMAD. I started Food Coop and didn’t continue. I don’t know what streaming is. I don’t always buy the cheapest item. I cannot cut my own hair - I’m laughing at this one. I love to make bread but I don’t do it anymore. Only because I eat too much when I make it. I love to buy a coffee. Yes Starbucks Frappuccino. I enjoyed doing this with you. I love supporting small businesses. Thanks for sharing.

I agree with this. There are times I try to save but end up spending more. I do go to garage sales though but not a lot. My sister goes all the time and her house if full to the rim with what she bought. She says----it was so cheap I just had to get it. She has way too much so I don't agree with that.

I struggle with this. Ooh clearance! It's on sale! Yet I don't really use/wear what I buy. It's the thrill of the sale for me. Sometimes I have to remind myself I can save 100% if I just don't buy it.

Frugal is using money to have a good quality of life.
@JoeSmith-cy9wj2 ай бұрын
You might find that as income sources change, time for frugality could become phased out. In the days of single earner and electric appliances the homemaker probably had time for coupon clipping and tending the garden. As more and more people are self employed or have multiple jobs, time for all the little things goes away. When it doesn't save money but costs it, frugality takes a hike. Unfortunate we couldn't be more frugal with pollution.
@robannmateja50002 ай бұрын
Making things from scratch... well, we do that- not to save money, but for health reasons. Ultra processed food is very unhealthy- packed with salt and other preservatives. We don't go out to eat for the same reason. Most restaurant food is prepared with salt. So while we don't go out and make all of our own food, it's not because of frugality. It's a welcome side affect that these habits also save money.

Thank you so much for all the helpful tips. Because of your videos I have been keeping track of the deals at my local Safeway. I’ve also learned a lot about stocking up and having a pantry. For some strange reason this week is $.99 week at my local Safeway up here in the Pacific Northwest. I’ve stocked up on black beans, rice pasta, and a whole bunch of other staples that were all $.99. If I had not been following your videos and listening to your tips, I might have missed out on this great opportunity to stock up on the staples. In addition, chicken was $.99 a pound I didn’t just buy one. I bought all three whole chickens that you could buy for $.99 a pound. My family thought I was a bit nuts, but , I frozen some and this will last us through the month. I really appreciate everything that you share and all of the helpful tips.

I haven't had much free time for youtube for months so i haven't seen you in a while and i was surprised by how your thinking has evolved, at least in this particular video. (This is my first recent one.) I like how the frugal community has been relaxing on things like recognizing the journey is different for everyone, and, as one of my favourite youtubers, Lydia Senn, says, we're adults who made our own money so no one can tell us how to prioritize our expenditures.

We have become low starch and low sugar but back in the day, I had oven use down to the type of scheduling science one uses to produce a holiday menu; but on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. The oven use schedule was like a day timer, appointment schedule which means the prep, mixing, and panning up for all the things was the same. It was a challenge I basically enjoyed at the time but it sure is nice to not be doing it anymore.

I think it's only natural, once you improve your finances by saving and being ultra frugal, to gradually increase, responsibly, your standard of life. I really appreciate you being real and sharing it with us. Sadly, most fin influencers that preach frugality are stuck repeating the same old ideas over and over as if they still live that badly with more than a million subscribers on KZbin. Minimalism is a tool we sometimes need to use out of necessity, not by choice. The whole point is, at least for myself, to be able to afford more now because I made enough sacrifice for long enough. We should also avoid "economia porca" (Portuguese expression, it means something like stupid savings / stupid frugality, when you work extremely hard to save a couple of dollars that don't matter in the end of your financial year in spite of the pain those savings cause you because you had to take care of a garden or bake bread or fix your own car when it breaks or live in the cold because you were saving gas, then dealing with a moldy house later).

I would prefer to either cut my own hair, or to have a trusted friend do it for me. I am a girl involved in what many consider a man's hobby, civil war re-enacting. and I need my hair short short. Enough that anyone around me thinks I am a man. Yes, there are expenses associated with the hobby-but many of those have been ameliorated by buying good quality equipment that will take longer to wear out than I do. I just started in Medieval re-enacting. In some ways it costs more; the entrance fees are higher. In some ways it costs less; there are people who will help you get patterns and cloth and a used sewing machine, either free or cheap, so that you can make your own garb. Re-enacting is something that, like a lot of hobbies, you can make expensive, or you can make inexpensive and affordable. Especially if your realize you don't need top of the line equipment starting out, but something that will get you through. I started in CW re-enacting wearing a cotton uniform. It lasted 7 years, and by the time it wore out, I could afford a wool uniform.

Wonderful advice as always dear Mr. & Mrs Ware. One thing I implore you to reconsider is replacing engine oil & filter yourself. Quick lube place all suffer the same problem as follow: 1, they never give enough time for the old oil to drain completely 2, as a result, your sump could be overfilled 3, replacing the oil filter yourself means you could fill it up prior to installation and that will greatly minimize oil starvation upon starting up 4, quick lube places often upsell you engine air filter or cabin air filter that you don't need 5, they most likely overtighten your drain plug & oil filter or worst not tight enough which would result in catastrophic failure 6, you will have no idea if the oil being used is exactly as specified in your owner's manual So please for your vehicle sake, engine oil & filter change should be carried out yourself because no one else will care for your ride as much as you do yourself.

One of the things I've given up is caring what other people think. There's no shortage of people telling you how you should live and how you should spend your money. Often these people are not in a position to be giving advice in my opinion. We're not frugal out of necessity as such, but in order to prioritise and reach our goals. OUR goals.

I see a lot of those extreme coupon people buying rubbish food like chips and soda. Why does anyone need 100 tubes of toothpaste. There’s a big difference between being frugal and being tight or a Scrooge. We enjoy being frugal but we don’t go without. We buy quality food and have a very nice car, it’s being frugal that allows us to save the money to do that. As you said, it sounds counterintuitive but buying quality will pay for itself in the long run.
@melissazabower3392 ай бұрын
The basic idea is do what works for your family. There are definitely things I buy/do that I could cut out, such as eating out. That said, with a chronic disease, I am willing to pay for convenience. Before my hand surgery, I couldn't chop vegetables, so I bought pre-cut produce. Expensive! But better for my health than the alternative. Same with paying a house cleaner. Some people would say it's a waste of money, but not for me. Figure out what works for you. 😊

I pay extra for grass-fed/finished, pastured, organic, A2, non-soybean-fed etc. foods and eat ketovore (some meals strict carnivore) - to feel much, much better than I have in years. A natural byproduct of this choice - I spend less on, and waste less of, produce! And I spend more on Dawn Powerwash on days I cook fattier meats. 🤷🏻♀️ But nothing tastes as good as feeling good!

It’s relaxing to me even when it’s a lot of work. I keep my car till it hits 300,000 miles, when I trade it in, it was till in good shape. I don’t do oil changes y more, let the garage do it. Hello to Larry and Hope. Love your videos. Of course I can make an instant coffee at home, but once every 4 to 6 weeks ( yes I am an infrequent coffee drinker ) I will buy a Kurig cup of coffee from the variety store close to our house. There's just me and my husband. By chance that coffee is only $1.45 , One coffee in other variety stores nt too far from us, costs between $2.00 to $3.00, and they are also variety stores. We arrived in this nice smaller city in summer of 2019, and the $1,45 cost was the same.- for a small medium or large. I gave a positive comment to the store owner, and he said there was no point in increasing the cost because the sales were so small that there was no point. We are living in Canada, so this is why the other hot or cold drinks are so steep. ( yup - most everything up here is more expensive than in the U.S. of A. - has been sinse forever ago. )
