Did I spy, what looked like, an old 12T ventilated van in the middle of the auto ballasters Leslie? Good location at Quintinshill !
@LeslieGilpinRailways6 ай бұрын
Well I spotted it but thought no, it can't be! Metal bodied but a lot of ventilation grills. I hadn't used that end of the loops for some time but will revisit it soon

I joined British Rail as an apprentice in 1971 and can well rember the goods train accident at Quintinshill where a class 37 was sitting on top of the brakevan of the train it crashed into. some places seem to attract accidents. Thanks for another great selection of loco's.
@stephendavies69496 ай бұрын
Yes, I've heard of that one too.

Its an accident that passed me by. I;ll have to look into it
@Barbarapape6 ай бұрын
@@LeslieGilpinRailways I think it was in 1972, i have had a look but can't find any details of it. But i can visualise seeing the Class 37 on top of the guards van thinking that anyone in there would not have survived. I had just started on the job training in the S&T Dept after 12 months at Carlsle tech college.

@@LeslieGilpinRailways I think it was similar to the famous accident The signalman forgot he had stopped a freight outside the box to let another train pass and let the 37's run into it.

Another great video Les some good zooming at Quintiinshill excellent location for it , has the Pullman lost a coach thought it had 9 on board ? that was a superb 12 hourer well done mate , top man, hope you managed to get some snap at some stage , lol thanks for sharing take care a t b Syd 👍
@LeslieGilpinRailways6 ай бұрын
Thanks. The Pullman was running short form, with only 8.

You noticed as well. Usually it runs 2 seating, 1 food prep, 3 seating, 1 food prep, 2 seating. I suppose if they don't have the custom, they can drop off a seating coach.

Interesting to see that - even after all these years - the infamous passing loops at Quintinshill are still in situ (although the singalbox is long gone), reminding us of how dangerous the railways can be.
@LeslieGilpinRailways6 ай бұрын
Not only are the loops there but also in use! Many though have forgotten totally of the tragic events there
@stephendavies69496 ай бұрын
@LeslieGilpinRailways It remains a grim case study on how a seemingly non-critical human decision between two colleagues that allowed a little flexibility on shift change times could lead to the biggest loss of life on the UK's railways. What fascinates me the most is how many opportunities were missed to avoid the disaster. So typical of many catastrophic events.

And despite all thats been written, I personally don't think the true cause has been established, just a little closer each time. What is for certain, the Caledonian Railway re-employed one of the signalmen and he retired from British Railways, although in a low grade.
@stephendavies69496 ай бұрын
@LeslieGilpinRailways Yep, that's true.l they did. I've watched and read a great deal about the event, and I'm inclined to go with the human error version of events, as opposed to the conspiracy view. But who knows?
