Great video and informative. I've been there a few times as a young teenager spotting. I'm into aircraft now but I still look into what's happening railway wise. My preferred British weekender with the missus is the Sidings Hotel in York, took many a picture and noted some registrations in my head..........could my passion as a young teenager be returning? I'm 50 this year just for the record 🙂

Very clever of Northern to run empty coaching stock back to Newcastle when dozens of people are on the platform. As the WCML is closed due to the landslips at Carstairs do we have freight coming down the old GSWR via Dumfries ? Excellent viewing as always Leslie !
@LeslieGilpinRailways Жыл бұрын
Thanks Euan. I have to check - I suspect not because of the strikes - no signallers in the manual boxes. I've a funny feeling they might be heading up the East Coast
@johncherrington6080 Жыл бұрын
I imagine that they had a driver but no guard and so it could only run empty back to Newcastle for its next working (assuming thst there was crew at that end.

@@johncherrington6080 That was my thought - not only units but also crews mislocated

The poor old Tyne Valley line has really been through the mill in recent months. Add to that the effects of strikes and it doesn't bode well for the future of the railway. Having spotted on the news this morning that the WCML was closed between Carlisle and Scotland, I had a look at RealTime Trains to see what diversions might be operating down the GSWR but nothing was showing and I didn't fancy spending endless hours in the cold by the River Nith just on the offchance that something might appear. Keep up the good work!
@keitheglon Жыл бұрын
Yes I agreed there with you. I used to work on that line years a few ago and when it goes wrong it does! Usually end up being stranded as the bus service was poor then if you do get stuck.
@andrewmcguigan8039 Жыл бұрын
Network rail and Northern really need to give their head a wobble, even if a level crossing was damaged surely the trains could be cautioned over it with the assistance of a local route manager.
@LeslieGilpinRailways Жыл бұрын
Tim, don't forget the number of manual signalboxes on the route which would need to be manned by managers during the strikes. Puts any thought of even a token service out of the window. No idea where the washed out embankment and culvert - I think it happened on Sunday. On that day NO - I repeat NO trains ran into Carlisle.

Hi Les Northern not doing well at the moment, terrible service to the travelling public, its the same around Manchester, since the new TT the service has changed but causes more problems than its supposed to cure. As always though your videos of the events make good watching. Thanks
@neilcrawford8303 Жыл бұрын
Yes the new timetables are a joke. The Liverpool to Manchester Piccadilly via Warrington Central is now TPE, EMR. The Northern services are an hourly that terminates at Oxford Road or only as far as Warrington Central from Liverpool. The TPEs are nearly all cancelled. Same with Southport trains, the Stalybridge via Victoria services still run, but the former Alderley Edge services now terminate at Oxford Road. This can mean a wait of around twenty minutes just to get to Piccadilly, two minutes up the line. Many of the connecting trains being non existent TPE services. It is a total mess.
@LeslieGilpinRailways Жыл бұрын
Peter, its a total mess from Government through the Dept of Transport to the management at Northern. At least it makes good video!
@roderickjoyce6716 Жыл бұрын
Neil and Peter, I feel your pain; but at least some of the Northern trains in Manchester and the North West are new. All the northern trains on the North Eastern and S&C lines are ex-BR refurbished on the cheap and particularly unsuitable for lines like the S&C and the Esk Valley where a high proportion of the passengers are leisure travellers.
@peterjackson-cheadleheath1182 Жыл бұрын
@@roderickjoyce6716 Agreed Roderick, the North East area of Northern ops are indeed 'not fit for purpose', as it were. Although I've recently seen news of new stock coming to Northern, maybe even the NE area??
@LeslieGilpinRailways Жыл бұрын
@@peterjackson-cheadleheath1182 that would be great but I'd like to see what they have that is suitable for the Cumbrian Coast where even 158s are out of gauge.

Never seen 158 in P2 before, does the wood train always go down the WCML now as it was using the S&C prior to the derailment.
@LeslieGilpinRailways Жыл бұрын
I can't say it was a unique event especially as it was quickly moved over to Collier Lane and Heaton transfers 156 to and from the Coast lineare via platform 2 usually. The log train has been via the WCML since Petteril Bridge.
@johndrew3202 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for that Leslie. Amazing how Northern expect its passengers to cram onto 2 coaches along that line, even when there is seemingly a spare train available. But perhaps there were problems with drivers/staff hours etc. Surely they could have connected 2 sets together to make 1 train to Newcastle? I was told some years ago that that line cannot close because it is now the only cross country route between routes via Leeds and via Edinburgh/Glasgow, it carries a lot of freight traffic. Happy New Year and great videos!
@LeslieGilpinRailways Жыл бұрын
Thanks! I think what Northern did to recover service is pretty much following the book. Staff were misplaced. stock was at the wrong end etc. In fact there is very little freight over the Newcastle & Carlisle line - often just a departmental train for Network Rail each way. However LNER use it as a useful diversionary route from Newcastle to Edinburgh.

Although the incident on the level crossing caused a delay, speaking as a passenger of Northern, there is a culture of shoulder shrugging and "not our fault" or "not my job" attitude in the rail industry. Instead of everyone making every human effort to get back to and maintain the service timetable after the problem is cleared, they sit back blame everyone else and let everything unravel around them. If I had that attitude at work I would find myself unemployed very quickly.
@LeslieGilpinRailways Жыл бұрын

My daughter has to travel on that line 4 times a week. I've tried suggesting that the train is a decent option. I have to admit, once she passes her driving test, driving to college will be the way forward. Northern Trains and Network Rail provide a ridiculously poor standard of service. It looks to me like government just want the railways to fail completely!!

As you said a typical banal afternoon in Carlisle station got turned into one of high drama, desperation and disappointment just becasue of one damned stupid motorist! That 1454 to Newcastle was just about empty when it departed. I presume those later cancellations were part of the knock-on effect of the previous incident. By the way, do you know why there is that 10mph restriction at the start of the Workington route?
@LeslieGilpinRailways Жыл бұрын
Thanks Rob. The cancellations were the knock on effect of the incident as you say. The curves from the South Junction round to Currock Junction involves a tight S - two very tight curves.
