Hi! Norwegian librarian here, and just thought I'd add that a lot of places also have libraries where you can borrow tools, musical instruments, seeds, sport's equipment, and so much more. (And don't be afraid of asking "stupid questions" in libraries. We've heard pretty much everything before, we're there to help first and foremost, and most of the times the "stupid questions" are in fact not stupid at all. And also often quite commonly asked)

I strongly recommend a library card. Saves you money, saves you space, motivates to really read a book not only to purchase it. And makes you visit a place where all kinds of social events take place what also makes you meet new people of all ages and all walks of life. I have renewed one this year and I have to admit, best decision ever. Plus reading is really relaxing and teaches you a lot and when you explain to others you have a deadline on finishing a book since you have to return it to the library somehow people who never get why you need more free time for yourself find it understandable. So if anyone struggles with asking other to accept they need time alone, a library card is also a good solution.

For screen protectors, at least in the US, just make sure to get them online and not from the phone carrier store. You can get 3 for $5-10 versus 1 for $30-40.

Yeah, I've noticed the same thing!
@ace00909

On the flip side of this, those $30-$40 ones are usually higher quality and come with a lifetime warranty if you pick right. So instead of having to replace something that cracks if you look at it the wrong way you get a more solid product that will guaranteed last the life of the device. Sometimes picking your battles is important and cost vs value really comes into play!

@@ace00909 counter argument: it's better to buy them for $1-3 each and break or screw up installing them 4 times (for a total of $5-15 after your 5th), than to spend $30+ on 1 and have to fuss with a warranty which might not be honored (even if they break less often), and might not be delivered for a few days after you get a response. keep in mind that a broken screen protector usually means an intact screen. I've always gone with buying a few cheap ones at once, and while I have cracked a bunch, I have yet to see anyone with a case and a screen protector damage their screen regardless of price.

‘Loop’ earbuds are amazing, they’re comfier (and safer) than those cheap disposable earbuds and you can customise them to block out more sounds, depending on your preferences. They come in a little box which can be attached to your keyring, so mine are always with me 😊 There’s different types of Loops buds, but the cheapest ones I got were around £20, so not ridiculous.

1. Notebooks - I love notebooks. But my favorite sustainable notebook is the disc bound system. You aren't throwing away a bunch of coils and laminated covers that have questionable effects in landfills. You can fill them with simple blank paper, simple lined paper, repurposed paper whenever you get something in the mail that has a blank side to it, old financial papers that are ready to be shredded often have a blank back and can be repurposed one more time, even printed on with a printer to create planner pages, lists of any kind - especially the kind that get updated frequently. The discs can be made of either plastic or aluminum and they last pretty much forever. You can make and replace cardboard covers if you want, maybe use glue and decorative paper to finish it off.…or you can buy a nice cover set for it. With a simple paper trimming tool, you can make these to be any size you want, and cut paper to match. Your local office supply store can cut stacks of paper to any size you want. You don't have to print or use any more pages that you want if you use undated versions, and it is very easy to learn how to create and Print your own pages Until you figure out what works best for your current season of life. 3. Blackout Curtains - in the United States, these are made of toxic materials that offgass. But the benefits of sleeping in a perfectly dark space are huge. So I love the idea, but be careful of the execution. 3. Library Card and Library spaces - 👍🏻 - absolutely. And my library gives me access to libraries miles in miles in various directions to my house, and if I request books from five different libraries, they are brought to my local one for pick up. I love a good audiobook For car travel. And it's nice to take a break from everything clamoring for my attention just to sit at the library to read for a while, or I will bring a portable keyboard that lets me work directly on my phone or tablet. No distractions. 4. Inexpensive Trips, including trips where you barter work for accommodations and cultural experiences. Car camping is also a cool way to travel. Combining a fun trip with picking up and an expensive piece of secondhand furniture that is solid wood and non-toxic… Win-win. 5. Luggage scale - I also find these helpful, as do my guests, Who shop a lot when they come visit me. 6. 2nd Hand Furniture - watch out for cockroaches and eggs, but otherwise I agree. Furnishing your home with less furniture is also a cool idea. Learning to make slipcovers out of fabric that is not covered with flame retardants is another good idea. 7. Smart phone screen protector - I have found that the right phone case is just as good, but the point is to protect it mindfully 8. Networking - but there are free options 🤷🏻‍♀️ 9. Quality 2nd Hand clothing - making your own high quality, non-toxic biodegradable clothing is even better, if you want clothes that also look good on you and fit properly. 10. Mental health apps - It is a sad testament to modern society that people have so many mental health problems. BTW, the more time you spend with screens, the more health problems you are likely to have, And time on social media is linked to anxiety, depression etc.

Lovely video! Some comments: 1. Notebooks and journals. Absolutely, I use mine every single day. An online approach is not that satisfying for me. I love feeling paper and the act of moving a pen across a page. 4. Affordable trips. For me I use hostels, family stays, camping. Avoid renting cars. 5. A small backpack is all you really need. I wear clothes that are sturdy and do not require frequent washing. Wool underwear are a game changer, you can wear one for 4 days and and are easily cleaned at the campground spigot. 11. A toolbox and a sewing kit save you a ton of money. 14. Books, cannot live without them. Books are my to go mental health therapist, escapism, and mental stimulation. I cannot imagine life without books. I have an iPad with some books stored but love the tactile feel of holding a real book. I once rejected a potential boyfriend because he did not have a single book in his home.

For everyone who does a lot of cycling or wants to: a good standing pump. You want to get one anyways because even if it's not a flat tyre you need to fill up on air with temperature changes etc. So at least get a good one. It makes a huge difference in caring for your bike and ultimately using it.

I bought the cheapest bike pump from Action for 2€ and I can confirm. The pump still works. But it feels imprecise. I have to force the pump to get my tire properly inflated, otherwise it's soft. I am pretty sure that my tire is over inflated. There's no pressure indicator.

1. Rice cooker. If you eat a good amount of rice, quinoa, or other things that can be cooked in a rice cooker, it'll save you time, effort, and even money (think utility bill). 2. Electric kettle. It makes heating your water for tea or coffee easier, cheaper, and less time consuming. 3. Water bottle. Save money and be less wasteful. You've got to find one that's enjoyable to carry around though. 4. Supplements. Get a blood panel done to see if you're deficient in anything. If you can't incorporate it into your diet, supplement it. My stack is simple and affordable: Daily D3+K2 and creatine, and weekly B12. These three simple things have solved a few important issues for me, all because I didn't know my levels were low before.

Mine are: a foldable reusable bag, handy for when you buy more than what you can carry. Fountain pens and bottled inks, they’re better for your hands and less costly in the long run, depending on the model of the pen of course. A small good thermos, to keep drinks warm, I always forget to drink my tea when it’s still hot, or it’s handy when I want a hot drink on the go, like a walk or on the train. A small tin with emergency painkillers, band aids and stomach aids, especially handy when you get carsick or get migraines, also helps others out when necessary.😊😅 Wireless earbuds: handy for on the way, not only for the music, but also to protect my ears from wind and excessive noise. 😊

I enjoy fountain pens and bottled inks too, but mostly for journaling and writing letters. They‘re too impractical for my everyday use to completely replace ball point pens. Can’t keep one in my pocket for risk of damaging, they dry up if you keep them open whilst researching and just occasional note taking every few minutes. But they‘re great. I don’t see how they’re cheaper though. You can buy pens with replaceable cartridges in any price bracket or cheap disposable pens.

This gift idea for a kid might not seem cheap, as it has to be of quality for life-long use, it is frugal, though - and I never regretted that I bought a tool-kit for my son to his 2-year birthday, starting with assembling myself in the hardware-store their smallest real hammer, a small saw for metal (it does work for wood, too, but is safer), a handdriven drill with a set of drills, a small set of screwdrivers, a fun measuring tape that has a button for winding it in, and an assortment of woodenblocks with nice surface. Of course in the beginning he used them with help and supervision, but very playfully. Later his toolbox could be completed. His children have also had fun with it. Many things are useful still in his adult life, not to mention the skills. I think you deserve such a gift yourself, if you never have had one as a child. 😍 It's never too late to have a happy childhood!

I would add also magnetic charging plugs for phones (if your phone doesn't charge wireless) 1) Avoid breaking the connector even if you snatch it. 2) the part the goes into the phone fits several connectors (USB C, Mini, Lightning). So you need one charging cable for all. 3) if the magnetic part is round, and you buy a cable with the head that can move, then you can move the device in any position without unplug it.

Yeah, it's not cheap, but if you want an easy way to take notes on books you're reading, it's hard to beat the Kindle Scribe. I also use it for journaling and drafting out fiction ideas and it's so nice to have everything saved in one place vs searching through half a dozen paper notebooks to see where I wrote down the thing. But full disclosure: I own way too many e- readers, they are a weakness and I'm not a good model for e-reader minimalism.

Dale Carnegie says in “how to make friends and influence people” something very similar to what you said about it being better to reread one book than read many. Quality vs quantity (consuming entertainment). He suggests we take notes on the book, and highlight passages. He also suggests we revisit it often to remember the advice and guidance, so we may actually apply it and become better at those specific things he suggests, which are life changing imho. It’s not just what the title suggests, it’s a guide to life, in a way. Earplugs and a sleep mask, yeah!! But while camping alone it makes me afraid. I once almost shat myself 😂 here an anecdotal story: a leaf fell on my tarp and I heard it gliding down it. I didn’t think of that because it was an urban area but it somehow must have gotten there. I was enclosed in my sleeping bag, and because it was a tarp I was visible to outsiders while not seeing or hearing them well. I laid there for a minute till I realized I had to move and I did so quickly. Saw no one near me, only someone running in a field nearby. I assume and hope it was a leaf… my bicycle with most my gear was next to me but since it was a tarp it wasn’t really enclosed. Scary stuff!

I totally agree about the luggage scale. In New Zealand and Australia there are often very strict carry on luggage weights, commonly a 7kg combined weight limit for personal item and carry on together. And the cost of an overweight carry on can be quite unpleasant.

Duct Tape! for less than about 5 bucks a roll is golden and worth every penny. We use it for so many things around the house and yard and dont go camping without it. It can mend a torn tent (temporarily), tape boxes for re use, tape together loose chords, makes a thin rope when wound you get it! Always have this around oh and even held together some car parts at times ,...LoL

5:00 with an older personal scale (so you don't screw up the history on a smart scale) you can just step on the scale holding the luggage, then weight yourself and subtract it. It's not super accurate, but you would want a buffer anyway

You can probably use a library app to request books etc that you’d like then just pick them up you don’t have to hang out. Also, there’s nothing wrong with sharing space with the unhoused in our communities.
@1122redbird
@1122redbird 26 күн бұрын
@@ecogurl39 Even in the parking lot I get asked "hey man can I get 5 bucks", "hey man you got a cigarette" (I don't smoke), "hey man can I use your phone", etc. Inside it gets old when I am unable to use the rest room because they are camped out in there. It's rampant where I live and this "unhoused" terminology is really just a term to soften things to be politically correct, they are homeless and many by choice (often camped out in front of Walmart with panhandling signs yet Walmart and lots of places have "HIRING" signs begging for people - liquor store right next to the Walmart and they just take handouts and then go over there). I sympathize sincerely with those who have mental problems and legit need help, it's not their fault. But others are living this way by choice and don't want jobs and it's wrong to just enable that and tiptoe around it and come up with new politically correct terms like "unhoused". I don't want to share space with people who don't want to take responsibility for their own lives. Sorry but we have differing opinions.

I'm a bit sceptic, too. But if an item is from relatives or friends and similar I'm all for it. To start with I was happy for second-hand shops, too, when every thing sold was gifted and sold for charity only. Now we have scams, people rob other people's clothes from community and house-cooperative laundry rooms, and even from shops, and then sell them profitably second hand, making money in a way that leaves no trace. A huge no, no for me is UFF, because of several scandals. All their unsellable clothes are trashed, and might land in open landfills and in the ocean even, and acrylic, polyester, etc are kind of plastic as they are made from fossil fuels, so if I occasionnally have to handle such, I dispose of them as hazardous materials. I try to be frugal by mending and using classic style clothes from clean materials until they are beyond repair - if they can't be used as plaided rugs and "ragrugs", I try to dispose of them responsibly.

Work yourself into it gradually. Most of the furniture in my home is stuff we've gotten as hand me downs from relatives. I've bought clothing, handbags, kitchen items in thrift and consignment stores and overall it's been a great experience. And if it doesn't work out, I donate it again and look at the money I spent on it as a donation to the cause.
