The 16“ MBP 2019 is simply the most stylish laptop (besides the 13“ MBP 2020) Apple ever made. No notch, no odd design choices…just stylish and practical. Wish we had that design today with maybe smaller bezels and the M1 / M2 series inside 😟
@aculturedman.9172

Can’t really say practical as its biggest issue is overheating due to how thin it was (plus the pretty questionable cooling system for the higher end intel chips) and its lack of ports.

@@aculturedman.9172 Well the overheating would not be an issue when decked with M2Pro... in that case design really was way ahead of the tech.

Something about that design I love too, but overall would rather the build of the newer pros. The square design is special, feels newer, and space is minimal because of the notch (even though it’s fatter, because, well, it has to be).

I own the 2019 i9 1 TB. It keeps up with my M1 MacBook Air without any issues. The size is cumbersome to carry but as a desktop with an external monitor it makes for a perfect setup. @@jesvinjaimon1535 the fans tend to be fairly silent. Once you start doing intensive work, it sounds like a soft waterfall (best analogy for how I hear it). The system will get pretty warm so I have it sitting on a laptop stand so the bottom can get max airflow to stay cool. My typical VM configs are 2 cores dedicated to the system in question 4 or 8 gb of ram and what i think is the right amount of storage for it. With a Linux vm running, the system gets warm and from time to time the fans throttle up and down but its not bad. Using a laptop cooler under, or setting it in a position to get good airflow will help you keep it cool.

So six months ago I finally moved on from my 2015 15 inch MacBook Pro and purchased a 2019 15 inch MacBook Pro. I knew that new M2 15 inch was coming out but got a deal for the 2019 2.4 ghz i9 32gb ram 1TB SSD Vega 20 graphics for only $550! I know the M2 15 inch is a little better in almost every way, but the deal was too good to pass up and this laptop really is amazing. The i9 with 64gb of ram handled my motion graphics and video edit work flow with no problem. Other than high CPU temps when the fans were on blast, it was really quite on par with the m1 max 32gb in my work case. Now on my m1 Max i often get low ram warnings. which i never got on my intel. But it goes without saying that the m1 max is still the better overal computer. But the 2019 top spec 16 inch is still not a bad computer at all.

I just ordered a 2019 16" MBP, for two reasons: 1. I want to connect two external displays, so for Apple silicon, I'd have to order at least an M1 Pro (50% more expensive refurbished), and 2. I want to run x86 VMs. I know it's kind of possible with UTM/QEMU, but it would be very sluggish. And I might want to dual-boot into something different than macOS, which is not possible at all on Apple silicon. But because I still want to run macOS as my primary OS, I ordered pretty much the best Intel MacBook Pro I could get, which was still a lot cheaper than any Apple silicon MacBook Pro with a comparable RAM/HDD config. But I have to admit that I envy the efficiency and power of the Apple chips. And things like the function keys and MagSafe.

Until the Crossover support is just a *little* better the gaming is better, plus there's eGPU options. Some of the game benchmark channels still show the Intel MBPs pull ahead... if there's a good eGPU attached.

I just love the deisgn of the 16 inch MacBook pro 2019. Nearly no bezzels without the stupid notch, the amazing touchbar, the gen 1 magic keys which are much more like the butterfly keys which I love so much than the magic keys we have now which feel like the old MacBook keys from pre 2015. Finally absolute style

As a pro model it has more connections and properly not the (software?) limitation of only one external monitor plus it is plenty of power for most people, so people take it over the M2 Air. Also speaker grills might be visual appealing to some people.

The M Macs are better overall, but if you go to specific users, maybe you find a LOT of people that get a better use with the intel. Mainly with lower price, some programers to use linux, and go on.

Probably VM’s, or bootcamp. lower cost to “get a mac” for people where latest performance isn’t needed. Other specific hardware/drivers/software that don’t (yet) support Apple Silicon. Multiple monitor support, more ports.

"...and it works perfectly fine." I have to use one of these intel macs as my daily-driver for company-related work. I wish every minute that I was on my personal M1 Pro instead. Boot up time is measured in epochs and it's just plain sluggish in everything that requires any swap.

The main problem with this comparison is that apple will have all but abandoned any further optimization for intel based macs. They will beat it out of consumers hands through lack of optimization and bug fixes long before the cpu is the issue.

@@DrMacintosh For sure. Im considering an i9 as locally, there are tons on CL in great condition for CHEAP. For a machine that will sit on a desk most of the time, its a hard argument against them.

They start already doing that by removing 2016 and 2017 macs from supported macs on sonoma, so probably 1 or 2 years updates remaining for intel macs before they forgot about them forever.

I've got a mid 2009 macbook pro that's still hanging in there. I don't use it for work anymore and if I did I probably would've upgraded by now. But for just web browsing and light work stuff it's perfectly fine, even though it won't let me upgrade the OS. Given the reliability of macs and most people not needing a ton of power I can definitely see why they would opt for a refurubed one that's $400 less than a new one.

I use a 2017 15inch MacBook Pro and tbh I feel no need to get a new laptop. It plays games great on windows 10, runs my software great, plenty fast. Yeah new stuff is more up to date software/hardware, runs faster, and better battery life BUT is that it? Do y’all’s really need a 4k video exporter in the amount of time you pee? Honestly I just hook up external graphics and BOOM better performance. Laptop is a desktop on desk and it’s mobile when I go to friends house. Am I wrong?

So you are testing the weakest of the GPU options on the 16" MBP 2019, as there was also the 5500M and the 5600M. Regardless it is impressive that the M2 beat the AMD in graphics but I'm not sure the same would hold for gaming and that was not directly tested.
