@@donovanulrich348 Crows have something owls don't. Numbers. There is a reason why a flock of crows is called a murder. A murder of angry crows can attack, harass, peck, mob, and even kill an owl if the owl mistakenly comes out before sunset, and the flock of crows spots it. Diurnal crows cannot tolerate nocturnal owls during the day.

Hi, I'm from Nigeria, live in Abuja and I can confirm that the sounds of an owl can traumatize you! Having lived with a female huge white owl (don't know the species) who lived in my bedroom ceiling of my new house, proceeded to lay eggs and hatched 7 chicks! I can honestly say that they have deprived me and my husband of our sleep for 3 months. Yeah traumatizing to say the least

My friends dad who passed away several years ago was a MASH Medic during Nam and every few days the MASH he was stationed at would get several mag dumps thrown at them by the Vietcong, no-one was ever injured though, the mag dumps were only aimed at the perimeter and was purely a scare tactic and every time he heard a burst of gunfire on TV even if it was a documentary he'd completely shutdown due to him associating that burst on TV as a mag dump being thrown at the MASH.

9:04 as someone who likes bones and makes bones into jewelry, I adore owls for giving me a way to get ethically sourced small mammal bones for surprisingly cheap online (especially if you buy in bulk from somewhere that usually sells to schools as they are often at a reduced price). That point at 8:27, where he says "if you know, you know..." For those of us who don't, he's referring to a event that happened in the early 2000s, where a man spent (I believe) eight years in jail for the murder of his wife. The stairwell pictured is where her body was found. The wounds were found to have Micro feathers in them, a feature common to owls legs. It was later posited by several doctors that the woman was in fact struck in the head from behind by an owl. If you've ever seen the talons on a great horned owl, you'll know why she didn't survive. This is the most well-known example of owls attacking people, but there are other instances recorded, mostly because those people inadvertently strayed too close to their nesting sites. Owls are exceedingly territorial, and will take it personally if you get what they consider to be "too close".

One more fact about owls: While the specialized feathers of owls allow for silent flight owls pay for this feature by sacrificing waterproofing. Owl feathers are not waterproof meaning that if an owl gets wet the feathers absorb the water. And this can make the owl so heavy that it temporarily loses the ability to fly.

3 other fun facts about masked lapwings: 1. The females have no idea when their eggs are about to drop, which is why the birds nest in seemingly ridiculous places (rooftops, nature strips, backyards... anywhere the bird happens to be grazing when they're due). 2. They can run. Fast. I remember chasing one across the oval in high school, and the fucking thing was running faster than I could before taking flight. 3. Their eyelids are transparent, so they're always aware of their surroundings, even whilst sleeping. This, along with sharp eyesight and nocturnal behaviour, make them virtually impossible to sneak up on.

4. They're commonly referred to as plovers in australia. While closely related they actually belong to their own subfamily
@JohnGardnerAlhadis
@JohnGardnerAlhadis 3 жыл бұрын
@@thomastailby7926 Plovers are a family of birds divided into two groups: dotterels and lapwings. Dotterels are the small, cute variety (e.g., the piping plover), while lapwings are the larger ones (e.g., the infamous spur-winged plover). But yeah, we typically just call 'em "plovers" for short, since Aussies hate extra syllables. 🤣
