I use heavily diluted (like 4 parts distilled water to 1 part 'poo) Suave Clarifying Shampoo and rinse, rinse, rinse, rinse again with clear warm water. Occasional spritz with rosewater and/or aloe vera juice depending on the weather. Occasionally massage and/or seal with jojoba (or sweet almond oil), vitamin E, and argan oil mix. Spot treat any itchy scalp with tea tree oil when needed. I did a loc detox with ACV and baking soda earlier this year for the second time in 4.5 yrs of being locked. I was surprised how little gunk I had after all that time, but I guess I am so low maintenance that there wasn't much build up. I do keep my locs covered most of the time when I am at home.

Interesting. What do you use to cover your locs?
@ncegbu

Girl, I use the Dollar Tree special! LOL! It is their $1 "multipurpose bandana". It is essentially a stretchy tube of material. It is stretchy enough for my big head so no headaches and very lightweight. I usually just wear it as a long tube around my locks, but you can get fancy with it. Search "dollar tree multipurpose bandana" here on YT or on the interwebs. They put it out in different prints every season. I cover my head at home to keep out dust/cleaning mishaps, cooking smells, kids' fingers, getting it caught in doorways, cabinets, and my lunch, etc. I usually sleep on a satin pillowcase, but my hair is starting to get long and heavy/hot, so I have been wearing the bandana to bed to keep it off my neck and so I don't rip any locks out when tossing and turning at night.

Thank you. I'm pretty active myself and struggled with finding a routine for washing and maintaining proper moisture until I found your channel. Washing your locs often can be a pain but it's totally worth it to maintain a healthy scalp. A year into my journey I've noticed my priority has shifted to the longevity of my locs , not the aesthetic. Products: I switch bw diluted Dr Bronners Lavender and Trader Joe's Tea Tree Oil Shampoo (scalp)

my main stay is Kirkland (costco) environmental etc. dish soap. I dilute about a tablespoon per cup of water. my locs always feel so light and soft after. my second wash is Shea moisture yucca and something. with this combo my moisture level is excellent. my locs are almost 8 years old and I wash every few weeks.

I'd be interested in knowing more about the daily upkeep/routine with locs. Like getting ready for work in the morning or prepping for bed.
@hallease
@hallease 7 жыл бұрын
Prepping for bed is just going to bed, I don't cover my hair at all, I sleep on a satin pillowcase. When it starts getting longer I'll probably put it in a bun or something. I work from home so aside from spritzing it with water in the morning so I don't have bedhead that's about it. If I am going to a business meeting or something I'll style it in a roll tuck and pin style. I made a video showing it in the Dreadlocks playlist

I'm training for a marathon and I just can't stand when my scalp/hair/head sweats.( I use Shea's moisture retention. I've also done an ACV/baking soda spritz to deep clean occasionally. Castor oil or wild growth for my scalp. Rosewater with some essential oils twice per day.) Do you use a head tie/scarf when running? I need more moisture wicking. Your locs are definitley growing by leaps and bounds!

I love Shea Moisture's Jamaican Black Castor Oil STRENGTHEN & RESTORE SHAMPOO w/ Shea Butter, Peppermint, & Apple Cider Vinegar. I use it for mine and my son's locs. It's sulfate free and consciously produced. It is sooooooo cleansing but not drying at all. You must give it a try...doesn't have a peppermint scent either :-)

I am so thoroughly enjoying your content both here and on Instagram. You can feel the thought that goes into this creative space you are cultivating. And you have such a lovely voice 😊. I am locing for the 2nd time the first set was 6yrs ago and it wasn't the best experience. this time around I feel a lot more confident and clear about what my scalp needs and how I want to nurture my hair. I have sebboric dermatitis so I had to scrap the whole not washing thing smh and the products she used were so sticky. I had to remember what works for others isn't necessarily what's going to work for me! I wash with Dr. Bronners Peppermint too! I am thinking of trying shampoos made by two small business owners I found out about. one is Buttersnbars.com who makes a shampoo that has neem oil in it which is great for sebboric and the other is SixahweNaturals.com (she makes amazing natural deodorant) I also may try just buying neem oil and adding it to diluted Dr. Bronners. you have shared so many amazing tips! thank you. your hair is beautiful but I love that your focus is health. 💞

Hey Hallease, I use castile soap too, but I'm South African (so i kinda live here too) and we don't have Dr. Bronner's so I can't really say anything about it. The castile soap I use is fragrance free, but I do add peppermint oil to it, because, like you said, it's really great for locs and I've noticed that it's a great ingredient to have for growing my hair. Maybe try African black soap (but if I can recall you might have been down that road already). I've seen other youtubers use the Dr. Bronner's with tea tree - have you tried it? Anyway, I'm not sure if I've been of much help, but I will say this - you have BEAUTIFUL locs - I love the way they're so full on your head, my hair is fine so I can only admire from afar. Please check out my channel and support if you like what you see (and hear). Take care and thanks for all the awesome videos.

Sorry if this comment double posts. Auto play ate my last comment. Anyway, I'll cut right to it: how have you gotten flakes out of your locs? You've spoken of scalp issues and frequent washing. What did you do to rid yourself of any flakes you got? I'm 7 weeks in and this past week my scalp has been revolting. I washed again and I still see some flakes here and there. Particularly trapped in the loc bed. I rinsed for a while...I'm not sure what else to do.
@hallease
@hallease 7 жыл бұрын
+xandria20 I'm not a loctician or cosmetologist but you might need to just soak your hair in warm water while washing rather than using a shower head. I find when it seems like I can't get my hair clean enough using the sink or a large bucket to clean my hair helps. Also maybe clarify with an ACV soak?
