Douglas Trumbull’s 1972 directorial debut film, ‘Silent Running’ is still such a powerful story and the four bilateral amputees (three men and one woman) who portrayed the little drones Huey, Dewey and Louie did an absolutely fantastic job. The final scene in the film, with Dewey, the one remaining drone, using a battered watering can to tend to the plants and trees of Earth’s last forest in the last remaining biodome as it drifts silently through space still puts a lump in my throat just as it did the first time I saw the film in the 1970’s. With no cgi existing at the time, practical models were used and the model of the ‘hero’ ship, Valley Forge was a stonking 25’ / 7.6m in length, requiring some serious kit bashing utilising the parts from something like 800 model aircraft and tank plastic construction kits as well as the custom built sections. The 6 months effort to build it certainly paid off as it really looks the part in the film. In fact, Valley Forge can also be seen as part of the fleet in the original ‘Battlestar Galactica’ 1978 tv series.

I once wrote a short SF story for a HS English class about the two drones that were left and how they encountered an alien ship who recognized and appreciated their mission. I thought it was very touching, but my teacher hadn't seen the movie I based my short story on and gave it a C.

Loved these movies. For a child of the 70's watching them 1st on a Black and White TV then Color they were profoundly thought provoking. Especially late at night sneaking in a movie when you were supposed to be asleep.

I saw Silent Running in the theater, too, and was blown away by its message. The one remaining robot taking care of the plants made me almost cry. He looked almost sad when left alone, but he continued doing his job. Bruce Dern was great in the part. It was probably the only sympathetic hero role he was ever allowed to play.

You failed to list Fantastic Voyage and the classic Russian Sci-Fi film Solaris.

I get so tired of videos asking me to like, subscribe and notifications. Every single one. And your video does it over and over again. Do you realize how long my subscribe list would be if I did it every time and how many notifications I would be getting?

I will add another one from the late60's/early 70's whose message still resonated; James Caan in "Rollerball". As for the list, I think the fact that so many of them have been remade, some of them several times over, and/or copied in one form or another, is testament to their importance of message. IMHO by the mid to late 1970's people were no longer interested in seeing thoughtful Sci Fi with meaning, they were more interested in brainless "Buck Rogers" entertainment [ala Star Wars] and more Pablum of the same ilk. I still believe the late 60's to early 70's was truly the golden age for Hollywood, one I'm afraid we'll never see the likes of again.

And Omega Man itself is a remake. The original was Last Man on Earth starring Vincent Price.

'Silent Running' is in this list: look at timestamp 5:16 and following. I agree that leaving out '2001: A Space Odyssey' is a major mistake.

I'm not familiar with "Sunshine", perhaps you can give us a synopsis? As for 2001, although I would agree it is one of [if not the] most important SciFi movies [certainly of it's time], it's "message" is not necessarily something that translates into modern society as some of the others do. JMHO

@@landiahillfarm6590 Sunshine is a 2007 movie by Danny Boyle. About a mission to reignite the sun after it starts to die. It mixes space drama with profound stuff. I'm not sure it gets the balance entirely right but it is very good and well worth a look.
