These two sisters were loved and the owners didn't try to squeeze every last penny from their sweet lives and brought them to HP. You two are the epitome of love and kindness. End of life is terrible for owners and vets who have to give that euthanasia to the animal. I dread having to say goodbye every time but always know its the right thing and can't let my beloved suffer for my weakness. Its the horrible reality to pet ownership that we will usually outlive our four legged family members.

I work at a shelter that supports cats and dogs and there are some truly heartbreaking stories that test your ability to cope and can make it hard to keep going. One thing we do that helps combat this is have a “warm fuzzy stories” binder full of the success stories that really touched us and bring us joy to remember. A dog who lived at the shelter for months and was adopted and returned multiple times but ended up finding the perfect family, a cat who was so stressed in shelter, misunderstood and overlooked but one day found a loving family and truly blossomed in their home. On a day when something really heartbreaking happens we take a look through the “Warm fuzzy stories” binder and it lifts our spirits and remind us of the ones we’ve helped, the ones we’ve saved and gives us the strength to keep going and help another one in a hard situation. I recommend this to every shelter!!

For the Love of the Hoof uses a sham supposed "equine chiropractor" Sierra, in the videos showing her, she uses a rubber mallet and by barely tapping on that rubber mallet she "realigns" a horse's spine, she then makes presumptive and highly speculative "diagnosis" without the aid of either radiographs or a DVM present. I have been telling this rescue they're wasting their money on this quack that could go to more rescues or proper vet care. This individual "Sierra" gives legitimate equine chiropractic medicine a bad name. One of the videos is called "Rescues need help on Warrior Wednesday" dated Apr 13, 2023, pay attention to timestamps 1:29 1:39 2:12 2:39 (2:39 where "Sierra" speculates "he has a lot of calcification", this is a presumptive "diagnosis" on her part, at 2:50 she also says (paraphrased) if not too bad calcifications can be broken up over time with continued use of chiropractic). Dr. Mike Adney who is a legitimate and world renown sport horse chiropractor on YT, I recently messaged Dr. Adney during one of his live shows and he had a bit to say about these sham people that parade as equine chiropractors, it is the live called Sport Horse Chiropractic, Dr. Mike Adney is live! dated two weeks ago (as of 2/21/24 it's the last live) and the timestamp is 29:10. I have commented several times on FTLOTH videos with valid concerns and was basically blown off by FTLOTH stating that this person was "highly qualified", anyone can sound qualified but that doesn't make them so. I feel this is a gross waste of donations and negligent to donators, it also eats up funds that could rescue more horses. I assume this individual is still there as she can be seen in the latest video called 'A Lady Saved.'

I really appreciate the end of life commentary. I had to say goodbye to my heart-dog 2 months ago and I wrestled with the decision for so long. He made it 16 years and we were able to have the vet come to my home to make his passing as calm and comfortable and as peaceful as possible. I know in my heart it was the right call before he got any worse but it was so, so hard. It still is. Ultimately I had to recognize and admit that he was only hanging on for me at the end, and gave him my blessing to rest. I miss him so much.

So true Dr. Lydia when it comes to being OK with talking about end of life for your pet I for the first time in my 48 years experienced the horrific grief by putting my 24 year old Chihuahua to sleep two days ago he probably should’ve been put to sleep a year ago to be honest But he would show signs that he was himself again. I didn’t feel that I should take the initiative like God and put him to sleep although now as of two days ago, he clearly told me he was ready and so I needed to be ready for him. Also thank you to all the veterinarians out there and especially to you too beautiful ladies. One more thing To Tawnee your message at the end has me crying my eyes out! I had to make this decision for my mare this year she was 30, and I had her for 28 years. I wanted her to go with some dignity. She suddenly started to lose weight. I had her tested for cushings disease and insulin resistance, and her bloods came back within normal range, but she then she became lame in her pelvic/hip area, it was a hard decision to make but it was the right design for her I'm grateful that I have her son reuben.

I wanted to add my 2 cents in on the last act of kindness. I have been down that road many many many many many many many times. Your heart bleeds only because you know that you cannot do anything more for that animal. I volunteered in a rescue for parrots for a while. One of the hardest cases that I had to say goodbye to was an Congo African grey named Mister. Mister should have been a pirate's parrot. His previous owner had taught him words that should never be spoken around a bird that mimics. In basic words he had a potty mouth. He was not fed a proper diet nor was he given proper care. When he came to the rescue his previous owner knew that she could no longer care for him. He had a multitude of internal problems, from kidney damage to liver damage to a broken wing that had never been healed properly. He was so sick, but such a fighter. We did everything humanly possible for that beautiful bird, to make his last days to his best days. The avian vet removed a stone/ mass from his kidneys. We all thought that he would do so much better, put the pain meds could no longer cover amount of pain that he was in. We all laid our hands on him as the vet gave him the last act of kindness. Rest in Peace Mister fly over the rainbow bridge. Dr Lydia breaking up is what I am doing right now. 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 and it's ok.

Then sad again when the dog had to have his eye sewn shut (so glad he didn’t need the more extensive eye removal). I pray his nose sample comes back benign. I can only imagine what it must be like for all of you to have your emotions on a roller coaster everyday. I pray that you are all able to destress when you have time off. What a difficult job but what a need there is for people who do what you do and who love each one of these animals. Blessings to all of you…………………..

I used to rescue parrots but h no good deed goes unpunished, ( people who want the pretty one.. not the bald one , but the pretty one was bald a year ago. Or you're " selling" birds, not free adoption.( No my adoption fees or donations were made out to the avian vet, the feed store, for meds, and my doctor bill when I had to get stitches from taming,. No money went in my pocket, I had each parrots story, from intake, and to when they were adoption ready . totally transparent had all vet , food and rehab cost that they could see what cost went into that animal. I had them rated into experience levels, had " educational classes" on how to feed and care, and size of cage..or you could buy one from me .yes I sold cages.they didn't just come in the adoption fee unless specified. I made them come visit their " parrots and bond, did home checks..a lady decided she wanted a FREE scarlet macaw or an African grey ( my two personal birds) I told her she could maybe adopt a similar one but would have to volunteer to gain experience..she didn't want a bald bird .caused problems, so..I decided not to do that anymore. Too heart breaking to rehab, then have one pass..etc. my grey is almost 30 now. They just don't mimic..he makes his own conversation..lol. they are so smart.

It’s sucks but we know our only goal is for him to be happy and functioning basically normal up until the end. And then say goodbye at home on a good day

Thank u for all that u do. I love Dr Lydia's way of explaining diagnosis so we can understand. End of life is tough I have a 20yo maltease x kelpie who is amazing for her age. She helps move our cows and sheep and is happy to supervise most jobs lol I have had her almost half of my life. Last year she tore the cartalidge in her knee. We were advised to operate but at her age it was risky and the pure rehab and time to heal I thought would be too much. We had that tough talk. Where to from here. We discussed about keeping her pain free and mobile and what it may look like. I decided not to put her through the op and give her the opportunity to tell me what she needed most. I allowed time to heal and ensure she was not in pain. Thankfully she bounced back well. I truly believe that all people and animals have the right to die with dignity. And not linger and be tortured. We discussed that should this not work it would be the last act of kindness. My little rockstar is going strong. Sleeps a bit more but is so good. I hope I have many more years but her needs are the priority. Thank u to the vet team it's heartbreaking and the fact u show emotional is such a positive thing for u and them.

I know I wish my vet had said something when my cats were getting near the end of life. I remember being so mad when it came out of the blue that it was time for them to go because my cats never acted like anything was wrong with them, they didn't act like they were getting old and frail. The one cat had kidney failure and then 5 months later we took the other one to the vet because she was getting extra clingy and once she was there she wouldn't even stand up when you put down, she never did that at home but the vet said you know I think this is it. I hated myself because somehow it didn't click that she's an elderly cat and I was tossing her out of my room at night so I could get some sleep (which didn't work because then she'd just howl outside my door.) But I'll never forget hearing this and thinking why didn't anyone ever say before in all the routine vet visits that there was anything wrong, or mention about their age and say to start getting prepared. The whole time I thought they were in perfect health because no one said anything different and they didn't show any problems until the last moment. Edit: I should add that in each case when the vet told us they asked if we wanted to take them home for one more night together. The answer was immediately no. We didn't want them to suffer another second and they hated car rides, we didn't even want to put them through that stress.

The wild, frightened horses make a sound I’ve never heard before. A low, long, snort. I’ve never been near wild horses.

I will do some praying for HP to be able to find gentler's and regular staff as well. I know that rescues often have trouble keeping staffed and that is because it can be difficult, sometimes risky and dirty work, and rescues cannot pay the same as many jobs people can get on the outside. I mentioned it last week and will again say, I am a tad worried that the operation might be getting a tad big for its' britches, yes you have to have funding, but you also need a bunch of staff, to get these animals adopted and cared for.
