If you believe all sahaba are good then you take hadiths which state that the prophet was bewitched or suicidal or that Allah has a face or a shin. The nahj al-balagha indicates Ali - the gate of knowledge - recognised the caliphs before him, as he states their appointment was by Gods approval " kana dhalika li Llahi rida". And its widely known Ali gave the pledge to Abu bakr as stated by al-Tusi in his talkhis al-shafi 2:157 and al-murtada in his tanzih al-anbiya 189-92. If the companions had ignored the claimed appointment of Ali at ghadir khumm, misunderstood hadith al-thaqalayn, hadith al-kisa and other shii proof texts plus the saqifa election was invalid due to the absence of Ali's involvement; then Ali could not state God's pleasure was attained by the appointment of three caliphs before him. Thus, the sunni interpretation is validated by Ali himself who declares their election as divinely approved "li Llahi rida".

So when a Shia opens Sunni literature a Shia has a dark heart and is making assumptions, but when a Sunni opens Shia literature they have an even darker heart and make even worse assumptions that lead them to saying the Shia are Kafirs, who are outside of Islam.
