February is the perfect month to start and grow your seeds into seedlings. You can start seeds of variety of winter, spring and some even summer vegetables. Make sure to start seeds indoors and plant the winter and spring seeds 3 to 4 weeks after seedling become 2 inches or taller. Wait until the danger of frost is over before transplanting summer seeds outside. Happy Gardening!

I am in zone 9 and I start these seeds the first thing in Feb. For each zone lower than 9, add 10 days. So Zone 8: Feb 10, Zone 7: Feb 20, Zone 6 March 1 etc. Let me know which zone are you from what do you usually start growling in February?

Cole crops, super hot peppers & onion seeds in February. I can't start anything much besides that. My big month for starting is mid-March thru May. Zone 6. Learned as much I as I want to start, I need to realize our zone to everyone else out there making videos to be patient. Northern gardens push these dates back at least 4 weeks, or more because your gonna need a lot of lights and space.

I live in Lexington Kentucky(zone 6a). My granny grew all her veggies from seeds outside. She sold plants in the spring to make ends meet. I've been planning on doing a seedbed this year and have racked my brain on when to plant it.

Look up your zone online. it should tell you when your last frost is.
@onlinebills9169

It would be a shame if none of you kept granny's seeds (keep planting those seeds, collecting thats new) because these would be the cold-hardy seeds that know what to do in that area, without problems. My advice: keep seeds from your production this year and plant them next year and so on. Store seeds in the fridge or freezer. seeds have oils in them and as the oil dries out (if you keep them in a room and inside their paper envelope) they gradually lose their capacity to grow the following year.

No one is taken your freedoms unless you let them. If you are not in jail, you are free. and if you have a mouth, you can easily say 'no, go f yourself' to anyone who wants to tell you how to live. Get your chickens as well and you dont even have to get a permit. They are "pets" for your grandkids, that identify as cats. Give them names. Applying for a permit, means you want permission from your 'master' to live your life! See how this works? If you have a permit, they know who you are and what you have, so they can come and confiscate them from you in the name of "public safety". You are free, so act as a free person :)

That's fantastic Bob. I am starting some things indoors for the first time, but I have always grown things outside from seed. The only reason I am growing inside is to see if I can extend the season a little for some sweet peppers. I waiting to see how well my seeds germinate. Hopefully mine will turn out ok. If not, I won't stress it and will just start some outdoors. I am in 7b. I would think you grow season is significantly different than in zone 4b?? Hope your growing season is super successful!

I've started buying parsley and basil since most places now have 2-3 in each pot. 3 for $3.99 can't be beat. Planted Spanish onions (from Barcelona) and arugula. Have hundreds of seedlings including lots of French melons that I'm going to try and hang over our 3rd story deck. I saw a video (first bad sign) and they did this and picked them on each deck - or said they did.

Borderline 4/5. I will follow your suggestions. I have a little greenhouse where I put a small greenhouse within a larger and then covered larger with 6ml greenhousenplastic. Inside the small greenhouse I have a 5 gal bucket of water with an aquarium thermometer for that size contsiner. It has worked besutifully. I go from outside into larger and my glasses steam up. It was 30 outside the other day and 65 in my inner greenhouse. It has been an experiment. I have a rivals growing and even with the polar vortex of -11, it survived. I will start a few seeds this month as an experiment. Thank you for giving us the negative temps fro the vegetsbles. It is really helpful in these colder climates.🤗

*It's time to start your sweet potato slips* indoors, too. I like to use a full flat set-up, the inner one with holes, the outer one without. Fill with a potting or seed starting mix. Lay a couple good sized sweet potatoes leftover from last summer's crop and keep the soil moist and keep under the grow lights by a south facing window. Once they start sprouting slips, I get my water jars ready - recycled pickle, mayo, whatever I have bought in the past that I didn't grow athome, at least three cups capacity. I will carefully break off slips once they get about 5-6" tall and put 4-6 in each jar of water by the south facing window. Don't wait too long, you want they roots growing in the jars of water, not in the soil. The sweet potatoes will keep making tons of slips. Before you know it, you'll be running out of jars and window space. But you'll have plenty to plant outside once soil temps warm up enough, usually looking for 60° nights. Plant the slips at least a foot apart. I like to use 25 gallon grow bags almost exclusively now and save my beds for cucumbers, melons, squash, tomatoes - above ground fruits, etc because it's so much easier to harvest roots from the bags than digging through an entire bed - less breakage. Also, it's pretty hot and dry where I live in the summer. I always get bigger, prettier sweet potatoes out of grow bags because it's easier to keep them watered than the big raised beds. Underwatering sweet potatoes gets you plenty of greens on top, but lots of long, stringy roots on the bottom.

Yess, that's the way I start my slips. It's the easiest and quickest way to get slips. Why people still use the water method I don't know. Last year I got 80 slips and gave alot away I started to early lol

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I especially like you using 25-gallon grow bags. I am a container gardener and have not yet used a raised bed. However, I have purchased a 128-gallon grow bag as a raised bed that I will try this spring. I'm new at this, so I'm not sure what plants to grow in it. Please suggest what veggies and/or flowers you would grow in this container. I will not going to be planting 30 varieties of anything. I plan to try to grow beets, carrots, cauliflower, squash, tomatoes, lots of sweet bell peppers, more potatoes, mushrooms, cucumbers, greens, and melons. Which of these are better for the raised bed grow bag? 2022 was not a good growing season for me until the fall garden was planted. Most importantly, I've learned that I need more than 6 containers of any veggie to have a decent harvest if I intend to feed myself and my cousin. My first fall garden is my first great success. I actually harvested all of the (6) broccoli plants, and some of the collards from store bought starts. Collards from seeds are ready to harvest, I think. Maybe they need more fertilizer. Everything looks very healthy, but the cabbages are slow in forming a full head. I had lots of tomatoes from 2 plants that didn't grow much until September when I moved them to a sunnier spot. I grew 5 eggplants, one bell pepper, and a few green onions. They were still producing until the freeze. I'm in zone 8b, I think, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana USA

@@clynthia0510 I'm a newer gardener, too, having started in response to the lockdowns and being refused access to the Trader Joe's I'd shopped at for over 20 years. I have some 100gl bags - they're also called root pouches, and are probably good for beets, onions, carrots, turnips, radishes - basically anything that has one root to a stem. I would suggest you use it for those in your cooler seasons, or get some yummy chard going or even consider a perennial herb garden. If you choose seasonal crops, you can plant it with a Three Sisters garden: Corn, squash and green beans, for summer (or melon). My green beans last year slowed down production during the high heat of mid-summer but I kept them alive with watering and they came back swinging once the heat waves backed off - I recommend Provider bush beans (with bacon). I am doing regular potatoes in 10gl grow bags. Spend the money and get good organic seed potatoes from a good source. I thought I was smart and used store bought and almost all came up with fungus scab and blight - now that soil is contaminated - good thing it's sequestered in bags! I do the sweet potatoes in the 25gl bags because of dehydration concerns - 10gl dries out too fast in hot summer. But I can lift and dump a 10gl. I can lift and tip a 25-30gl. A 100+ gallon bag isn't going to move for you, so much easier to dump a container and fetch your grub - get better water saturation. If you want bang for the buck, sweet potatoes is it. Second, I would say butternut squash (talking summer crops with storage, that is). Also for summer, get at least two each zucchini and cucumbers going - you'll have something fresh almost every day to eat and a billion different ways to eat them. I was actually sad when the season ended. How will I live without pasta primavera???? I like Baker Creek and MI Gardener for seeds, but have also bought from Johnny's Seeds. Cauliflower is fancy, schmancy and kind of tricky. Olde timer gardeners (think Great Depression) didn't bother because of the time, space and trouble. At least with broccoli you can continue to get side shoots. Consider getting sprouting broccoli - very easy, grows a lot of small heads but tender shoots and greens that are sweet raw and stir fry, soup, omelette well. I'm sure I'll think of other stuff, have you considered ever bearing strawberries? You could dedicate a whole 100+ gl pouch to a personal strawberry patch - they are perennial, so if you manage them well you only buy once and get fresh vitamin C all summer long for as long as we're here. Any room for fruit trees? It's bare root planting time right now. Maybe you have a sunny corner for a Jujube tree? I would like to add one because their fruit last forever on the counter and if times are tough, you can stump your tree for firewood and it will grow back in the spring - that's the history of the Chinese peasants. I'm glad you are taking care of yourself and your cousin - _trouble is coming._ If you haven't cast your cares on Jesus yet, please look into that - He's the one name we can call on to be saved, and He loves you. May the Lord richly bless and protect you and his face shine on you and give you peace. 🐔🥚🥑🙏🕊️

Claiming to plant seeds in February 2023 is great if you live closer to the equator. We, in Southern Alberta live in Zone 3 and in February, the soil, the trees, the plant pots are still frozen SOLID. The seeds would not be able to be planted unless we have a jack hammer to pulverize the soil to make a HOLE for the little seed to be plopped in. Also, the wintering birds would just eat the seeds as dessert.

I use manure when its time to transplant outdoors. While indoors I use a water soluble fertilizer at half strength.

I have collected different types of lettuce seeds over the years and I always wonder when to plant them because they have different times to start?

Lettuce likes 70F, depends on where you live, you can start lettuce seeds indoors about 3 weeks before your last frost date. I start mine in the first week of March in Zone 9.

@@DaisyCreekFarms I am in zone 9A. I have mixed up some of my lettuce seeds because the packages broke so I will wait until March or the end of February.

We are in a deep freeze, and I'm interested to see what has survived in the green house. I have a couple hundred seedlings about a month old, many on the list. They were looking pretty sad today

@@DaisyCreekFarms Nope, it's got a blanket of straw and plastic, with a couple of water barrels in the back for a thermal mass. I should have used a kloche inside as well. Should be a few survivors though!
