It really depends where you are. But for me (zone 8), I would sow leeks in March or April. Then sprouting broccoli and sprouts in maybe late May/June.

Tricky thing is most people don't have the warm windowsill with enough light, or at least that's my problem. So starting early is very tricky. I have a heated propagator but without the light seeds can become leggy. With climate change it seems spring weather is now quite warm so onions and things seem to catch up pretty quickly.

I wish I could just grow alliums like this still but leaf miner / onion root fly make it impossible now, even if you put enviromesh over there are usually enough in the soil to ruin much of the crop. I'm seeing if I can avoid the worst by starting them off in modules and pots in the greenhouse this year.

What fun to get going with February seed starting :) One trick you might want to try (I'd love to give credit for this one, but can't remember where I learned this!) is planting the peas into lengths of plastic guttering that may be left over from a gutter install. Cut the guttering lengths to about 18", fill with 2-3" deep of potting mix and plant the peas into the gutter. You can tape a bit of plastic wrap at the ends to keep the soil from falling out the ends. When it's time to plant outside, make a trench the same length of the guttering and then gently slide the whole length of the sprouted seeds and their seed mix right into the trench. No need to disturb the roots :) It's better to have 12-18" lengths of the guttering to make sliding the material into the trench a little easier. Hope you have fun with this.

Question: Can you do a video about small greenhouse chores and management? Not so much about the plants but keeping it tidy. For instance when watering your seedlings and growing veggies, the mess it leaves behind and how you clean it up to prevent excess algae and molds building up, disease prevention, air circulation, temperature ect. Any tips and tricks would be appreciated! Thanks for all the videos you do they are so much help and always a good review every season!

I agree, it would be very informative as a new greenhouse owner (mine is 10' x 12'). It would be good to know about putting your greenhuse to bed for winter and then waking it up for the new growing season. It would also be good to know it it's possible to grow anythibg through the winter season, obviously with some source of heat.

Most of it is basic housekeeping, but I will say the best thing I ever bought for my greenhouse was one of those auto-vent devices. It makes a massive difference to temperature regulation and air circulation without having to constantly be opening and closing window vents.

You should plant and grow Egyptian walking onions. The shoots taste like a cross between chives and garlic, and they will bulb up and reproduce without ever needing to buy more beyond the first purchase. They're cold and frosty hardy also. We went negative 28 Fahrenheit temp with windchill here in Ohio and they all lived. I didn't cover them or anything from last yr. They had very minimal tree leaves that blew on them, but I could still see them all. They do great. This is my 3rd year growing them, or them growing for me lol

Hello Ben, I had a lot of grey aphid on my sprout and cabbage plants that were sown in the Autumn and doing well. I have never seen or heard of them before and it was a lot of work simply lessening their number, I didn't manage to eradicate them altogether. The plants were very poor as a result. Can you advise me if the prolonged cold spell is likely to have killed them off and what I can do to avoid them this season. Many thanks Wendy
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg Жыл бұрын
Yes, a good, harsh cold spell usually kills pests such as aphids and whitefly off. To avoid them this season try encouraging predators such as ladybirds (kzbin.info/www/bejne/hIK0d4dorcyCrLc) or simply cover plants with insect mesh/row cover.

Do you have any tips for greenhouses? We have a choice of putting it under the edge of the canopy of a large tree which shades it mainly during mid-day sun. Or putting it to the south of the large tree. But that means the space under the tree becomes unusable as growing space due to pigeon muck. I've looked at your growing tool and couldn't find anything that would help
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg Жыл бұрын
Hi Tom. I'd put the greenhouse where it can get the most sun. My greenhouse is a bit shaded, and while that's great in the summer, it does mean less warmth in spring and autumn when it would be welcomed. Also the pigeons poo all over it! So give the greenhouse a sunny spot if possible, away from the edge of a canopy.

The cool season crops (lettuce, peas etc) can be germinated inside the house then kept on a bright windowsill for a few days once up. They can then go outside with a little protection. My greenhouse isn't heated and does get frosted, but it's just that little bit warmer to make a difference. As long as it isn't super-hard frost, you're fine. So I guess brief dips down to -2C would be okay for these crops.

@GrowVeg Жыл бұрын
Thanks Noora, will bear that in mind for the next time we do this. For the cool season crops mentioned (peas, lettuce etc) you want to germinate them at room temperature, after which they can be moved to a greenhouse or cold frame or somewhere else protected to grow on until it's time to plant them. Warm season crops would need a minimum temperature of around 50F/10C once germinated, but ideally a little warmer than this.

In 2018 I planted a variety called Precoce A Grano Violetto. Great tasting fava! They were mowed over in June, they grew again from ground level and I ended up with another crop (not as much as spring harvest) in early fall. They were mowed again and came back up right away. Love this so much I have been saving dried beans in case they decide not to come up. - Zee, N. Cali zone10a

in terms of pronunciation is 'shah-LOTs' vs 'SHALL-uhts' a North/South thing? 😂😂Alliums don't really come up in day-to-day conversation very much, but I'm not sure I've ever heard the word "shallots" pronounced 'shah-LOTS' in real life. Great vid anyway, as per. Cheers!

Hi I have been watching your videos for quite some time, I'm just curious could you please do more indoor growing too like if you don't have a back garden or greenhouse etc...:) Due to moving because I was homeless I no longer have a garden/allotment unfortunately.

Hi Connor. You can certainly grow plenty indoors. I've had great success with sprouts (kzbin.info/www/bejne/nGLFcnuioq6Fbpo), microgreens (kzbin.info/www/bejne/kHSwq6WBftiEe6c) and mushrooms (kzbin.info/www/bejne/bpLSppyeir-Cq9k). You could also grow herbs on a sunny windowsill, and maybe even chili peppers.

I love Ben’s videos! But I have a hard time figuring out when to start as I live in Sweden. Latitude is 60.60357 not unlike Alaska/Siberia. We are still covered in snow and ice in April. With a very short gardening season knowing when to start is crucial! We often can’t get anything into the soil till June though I have plastic coverings that help me dare to plant outside in May sometimes. I would love to hear experience of gardening this far north!

I am in a similar situation to you here in southern Finland 🇫🇮 I tend to go by “planting out” dates and work backwards - seed packets (bought locally) usually have info on when to plant and plant out. You should be able to start later though and still harvest around the same time as the long daylight hours make up for the short season. Very slow germinating things like parsnip needs to be planted in February but most other things will be best waiting until at least March or April or even early May. I am not a great gardener but still try every year. I just plant peas directly into the soil in May when I see local farmers plant their peas or other crops 😂

Oh Ingrid! I wish I could help. You have a very challenging zone and short duration. I'm in US, North Carolina so vastly different. Do you all use a greenhouse or does that even help? I suppose it would have to be heated. Do you start plants indoors to extend the growing season? Lolly
@IngridFranzon
@IngridFranzon Жыл бұрын
@@morninggloryfarmstead hi Lolly! I have a mini ingested greenhouse in my small garden and yes it helps! So in May I put my tomato plants and zucchini seedlings there so they don’t overgrow inside! And then late May/early June I sow seeds directly in the soil and have a plastic cover which works till there is no risk of frost mid-June. It’s a lottery- but a fun one!

Thanks Ben, timely advice again. Last weekend I got my tomato seeds into pots and on the heat pad in the garage. They can come inside when they sprout up a little and make way for hot pepper seeds. You really should stop stealing from your beautiful daughter, bad Ben !! :)

I plant my shallots, onions and garlic bulbs in November. They start to root and even shoot up green then go dormant over winter and then very early in spring start to grow. We had -7F temps this past winter with brutal cycles of arctic blasts, rain/warmer temps over and over this past winter here in TN (I'm Zone 7b). I lost only one Music garlic plant. The remaining 18 are fine and growing this April 2023. The 4 elephant garlic are all standing. Nero shallots are robust and now 8 inches high but I did suffer a 30% loss in the Grey shallots. The onions are now growing both yellow and red.

Not sure if this will be seen by anyone that matters, but my friend over at 90 Second Mycology (mushrooms), is having his channel demonetized because YT says his content violates their guidelines, is "harmful and promotes drug use." The man teaches a technique that is great for people just getting into the hobby, whether it be for medicinal or gourmet mushrooms. As we all know, when starting a new hobby, getting wins under our belt further drive our intrigue and passion for that activity. Growing mushrooms can be a tricky project as it is often costly to get started, but with this gentleman's technique one is able to get started for a fraction of the price with great success. We are here to learn to be more self sufficient and mushrooms can be used for a variety of things, least of all, food. Please do what you can to help appeal this decision! Again: 90 Second Mycology. Thank you!

If you are in the UK. I get the box of Bigga dried peas 39p last time bought them. Sprout the peas in a jar with water, after 2 days pop them on a tray in sunny windowsill. In 4 days you have yummy peashoots. Garlic bacon cut fine olive oil and your homegrown peashoots. Lovely way to get your greens in.

Ben - my fava beans did survive so far just one or two collapsed have sown some green manure between them Phacelia tanacetifolia. I am hoping the frost won't kill them both now. Bit concerned about growing peas as last year they caught heavy rain and went like mush. Thanks for the cabbage tip I still have some in the ground not doing well. Just sown a load of stuff in the small polythene tunnel - toms, peppers and aubergine; squash and calendula, lemon balm, valerian ect. I built a cold frame but decided to grow directly into it however not enough soil and a rock at the bottom will have to add more soil and compost to a level before i can use it.

I love the toilet roll tube idea! Thank you. I have my kids to thank for that too, because they don't like my toilet jug 🤣 My fava beans that I planted when you made the winter fava beans video actually survived. They're a Lebanese variety, so I wasn't sure they'd make it, but I left them in pots on the outside south west facing windowsill and just two of them got a little frostbitten, but the rest are looking happy. Going to start some more too, to compare how well they do.

Sorry if you covered this already, but why “peat-free” mix for the peas? I realize that peat harvesting is horrible for the environment, but is there something specific to pea seeds? I’m Trying to use more alternatives, but it’s hard to find
@GrowVeg
@GrowVeg Жыл бұрын
Really I mean peat-free mix for everything. Never use peat because of it's impact on the environment. So choose a peat-free mix (peas aren't too fussy - any all-purpose/multipurpose mix will do).
