What fun to get going with February seed starting :) One trick you might want to try (I'd love to give credit for this one, but can't remember where I learned this!) is planting the peas into lengths of plastic guttering that may be left over from a gutter install. Cut the guttering lengths to about 18", fill with 2-3" deep of potting mix and plant the peas into the gutter. You can tape a bit of plastic wrap at the ends to keep the soil from falling out the ends. When it's time to plant outside, make a trench the same length of the guttering and then gently slide the whole length of the sprouted seeds and their seed mix right into the trench. No need to disturb the roots :) It's better to have 12-18" lengths of the guttering to make sliding the material into the trench a little easier. Hope you have fun with this.

Question: Can you do a video about small greenhouse chores and management? Not so much about the plants but keeping it tidy. For instance when watering your seedlings and growing veggies, the mess it leaves behind and how you clean it up to prevent excess algae and molds building up, disease prevention, air circulation, temperature ect. Any tips and tricks would be appreciated! Thanks for all the videos you do they are so much help and always a good review every season!

I agree, it would be very informative as a new greenhouse owner (mine is 10' x 12'). It would be good to know about putting your greenhuse to bed for winter and then waking it up for the new growing season. It would also be good to know it it's possible to grow anythibg through the winter season, obviously with some source of heat.

Most of it is basic housekeeping, but I will say the best thing I ever bought for my greenhouse was one of those auto-vent devices. It makes a massive difference to temperature regulation and air circulation without having to constantly be opening and closing window vents.

Not sure if this will be seen by anyone that matters, but my friend over at 90 Second Mycology (mushrooms), is having his channel demonetized because YT says his content violates their guidelines, is "harmful and promotes drug use." The man teaches a technique that is great for people just getting into the hobby, whether it be for medicinal or gourmet mushrooms. As we all know, when starting a new hobby, getting wins under our belt further drive our intrigue and passion for that activity. Growing mushrooms can be a tricky project as it is often costly to get started, but with this gentleman's technique one is able to get started for a fraction of the price with great success. We are here to learn to be more self sufficient and mushrooms can be used for a variety of things, least of all, food. Please do what you can to help appeal this decision! Again: 90 Second Mycology. Thank you!

You should plant and grow Egyptian walking onions. The shoots taste like a cross between chives and garlic, and they will bulb up and reproduce without ever needing to buy more beyond the first purchase. They're cold and frosty hardy also. We went negative 28 Fahrenheit temp with windchill here in Ohio and they all lived. I didn't cover them or anything from last yr. They had very minimal tree leaves that blew on them, but I could still see them all. They do great. This is my 3rd year growing them, or them growing for me lol

I plant my shallots, onions and garlic bulbs in November. They start to root and even shoot up green then go dormant over winter and then very early in spring start to grow. We had -7F temps this past winter with brutal cycles of arctic blasts, rain/warmer temps over and over this past winter here in TN (I'm Zone 7b). I lost only one Music garlic plant. The remaining 18 are fine and growing this April 2023. The 4 elephant garlic are all standing. Nero shallots are robust and now 8 inches high but I did suffer a 30% loss in the Grey shallots. The onions are now growing both yellow and red.

I tried the toilet roll planting idea as I'd seen it on so many other videos and it was such a disaster. The rolls started to unroll so I ended up with a load of compost, cardboard and stray sweet peas, and the base of them went mouldy. I had packed them into a seed tray like you. I have now bought some deep modules from Containerwise that I absolutely love as there is no chance they are going anywhere.

I plant onions from seed as early as November in the green house, transferring to bigger pots, and starting other seeds every month. That gives me continuous crops, and they get really big bulbs if you cut them back to about 6" high when young. Doing that forces them to have more leaves, which means more layers in the bulb. I get to harvest earlier that way, so I'm storing less. The later onions can be left in the ground, bedded under straw for later harvest. I do raised rows so they don't get waterlogged in wet weather. I've also found Cilantro does really well in my greenhouse along with lettuce, so I can have fresh salsa in winter.

What is your frost date? Yes! I’m succeeding with lettuce, spinach and micro greens! I got a more powerful set of lights from same company as old ones. More kelvins and brighter, whiter more blue spectrum light. Last I heard U.S. lettuce crop was damaged in CA from flooding and I read pathogens they’ve been fighting. Prefer my own anyway. I’m trying shallots this year to see how they are. Lol, I never think of peas or beans as starts. Testing tomatoes, peppers, onions in winter sow jugs outside to see if it affects production. It’s been oddly warm this month until today and now we will go the other way-we’ll below zero F. I will wait until mid feb, maybe March to WS. Trying artichokes for first time in the north. Good thing there are great garden channels to watch as the seed packet said nothing about vernalization. Crimmeny, I have them in the fridge for 2 weeks then once growing I have to get expose them to cool/not freezing weather in order for them to produce chokes😂🤣😂 They better be worth it! Do you think artichokes would work in winter sowing? I put a couple out just to see.
@GrowVeg Жыл бұрын
My last frost date is around mid to late April. You can sow globe artichokes from late winter, up to a couple of months before your last frost date. They need warm conditions, so don't start them too early unless you have a warm position to grow them on.

Welcome back Ben, good to see you and listen to your garden planting tip and suggestions but most of all the practical part of your video. Love it all!

My last frost date is May 15 so anything that needs to be started 6 weeks early will not be going in the pots until later...but I love your suggestions! I have started sweet potatoes for slips and am anxiously awaiting some seeding mats. I used a very small mat last year, compared the results to a tray without a mat, and it did seem to make quite a difference. I've ordered 2 more for this year. I did a quick inventory and found that all but one of my subscribed gardening channels are from UK content producers like you! I use the paper rolls almost exclusively, and learned that trick from -- you guessed it! -- a British gardener! This year, I will give the newspaper kind a go. I first learned about no dig gardening from a Brit, too. I just love your green house and have that on my wish list, but it will be some time before that becomes a reality.

Cheers for that Tonie. Great you're getting your tomatoes started - they appreciate the longer growing season. :-)

Hi Ben, I’ve never really grown any beans other than Broad beans but would like to experiment this year with dwarf French beans and possibly also runner beans. Would you be able to make a video on the best way to grow each type please, including how much space they need and the best way to support them? I have limited space so it would be good to see which type yields the most produce for the space. Can’t wait for spring! 😊

Hi Karen. Do check out our previous videos on growing beans - plenty of ideas there, including clever ways to support climbing beans - thoroughly recommended. :-) kzbin.info?search_query=growveg+beans

I love how you used the rake for straight rows, I always thought using sticks and string was too complicated but now I know a way that makes more since

Mark up spacings in permanent on the rake handle, so you can use it as a measuring tool too.
