Hey Guys,
This is the 15th video of our 2001 Thomas School Bus Tiny House Conversion.
Today I continue cleaning the surface rust off the floor with a Threaded Arbor Knotted Wire Cup Brush with cordless Milwaukee grinder and a metal cut off blade with a Makita corded grinder.
Because I had the corded grinder I could get the rest of the floor done much faster. It was a game changer. I finished the last 3/4 of the floor. It was alot of hard dirty work.
After grinding we did a good sweep, vacuum and mop. We went over it again with a tile sponge and soapy water. We scrubbed the walls and side rails with a scourer, rag, soapy water and AJAX.
The floor cleaned up really nicely. Tomorrow we'll be finalising the floor with bondo and paint! NO MORE RUST!
Soon enough, we'll have a tiny house.
Yehaaaaw!
We hope you enjoy this video.

The rust deppends on how does it feel when you touch it. Its it "glossy" and "clear" when you touch it? You're alright. Is it "matte" or "rough"? You need to grind more. Its simple, you just need to touch it :D

Nice! Thanks for the feedback Tom. I hope this comment helps people in the future with 'the rust question.' It seems this is a confirmation of my assumption that I had grinded sufficiently. All my rust is down to a glossy feeling at it's worst points. I believe we're ready to paint. That is happening today. Thank you again for the comment.

Make sure you use a good anti rust expo you paint to seal it afterwards to prevent it returning also. Corded tools always have more get go to them. Battery powered handed but not for the huge area your doing..nice work so far

Agreed Larn. That is my experience too. I like the battery for everything, but when it's a big space, the corded tools are orders of magnitude better.

I would have bought a $10 harbor freight angle grinder and abused it on the floor using a wire wheel and saved my$150 Milwaukee for other things. Ospho is a thin (water like ) rust converter. You can take a pump up sprayer like for spraying weeds and spray the Ospho all over the walls and floor. Saturate it sothat it is dripping out of the little cracks every where. Love the hard work you guys have been doing!

A rust converter paint is best for rust, it actually converts it to not rust. Also, welding the holes would be best if you know anyone who welds. Or you could learn to mig weld on those holes, it is much easier than people think. I'm thoroughly enjoying your videos. Great work.

Thanks a lot Ben. I really appreciate the kind words. Yeah, I'd love to weld them, but I don't own a mig welder. Do you have a good recommendation for a mig welder that doesn't cost a small fortune?
@benharrison1888
@benharrison1888 7 жыл бұрын
Ian Robinson I have only used millers. The prices have come down a great deal. With thin metal you could get the smallest one they make. After you learn to weld you find there are a ton of things you can do and make with them.

Cool I'll check out millers. Part of my overall plan for the bus is to weld a bunch of boxes into the empty space of the bus's chassis. To do that, I'll need a good deep metal welder. Those under boxes will hold the solar battery bank, water tanks and extra storage for recreational stuff. I expect a lot of welding to happen here. I'll be needing a professional welding machine. I've done a bit of stick welding before and KZbin is here so... how hard could it be? :)

Use POR-15 its a rust converter/preventative. the best on the market by far, professional car restoration specialist have been using it for years to save old cars from extinction. it requires a 3 step method for proper adhesion. getting rid of loose scale rust, then use etching solvent, and POR-15. very easy and a surefire way to make sure you'll never see rust again. ive been using it for 15 years and its never failed yet.

I hope this doesn't come off as too preachy, but having the confederate flag as your image is troubling. I understand appreciation for great generals (my favorite is Stonewall Jackson) and the bravery of that war, but it's important to put it behind us. Far too much racism in that flag, ya know? I hope you don't hate me for brining it up. I believe it's important that we not defend symbols that remind people of slavery. Maybe use a picture of a dog or a cute kitten?

I don't know what the process is called that Volkswagen used but it can be done on office file cabinets, had it done in my office. If the equipment can be rented, that would be the ticket for the floor.

If you had to do the rust part over again how would you go about it? I am at this stage right now. Did you mop or clean before or after? Pretty sure after
@IanRobinsonGlobal

I think we did a great job in terms of the way we cleaned the floor and painted it. It was a lot of dirty work, but I feel very confident that we eliminated the rust in a very effective way. Yes, we grinded all the rust off, then mopped it up and then painted with 2 coats. Check previous videos, I believe we documented it very specifically in one of the first 20 videos. Additionally I would get a chord powered grinder rather than the battery powered one. I switched from the battery one to the chord one 3/4s of the way through the grinding process and it worked much better than the battery powered one. Hope this helps.

LOve It!!, got to find me a yellow bus! (is the past tense of grind, grinded or ground in America?)

LoL - It's great to hear from The Farm! :D I don't think grinded is right. My spell check goes off when I type it in. So I guess it's ground. That said, I ground the coffee this morning... I grinded the bus. Maybe that just Ianese.

I know this was a video from a few months ago, but what's your opinion on this. On the smaller round holes, couldn't you just dip a rivet in silicone and pop it in. If it works on planes, it must be OK for a bus.

I think that is a great idea. If I had thought about that, I may not have done the pennies and epoxy.

just use some rust inhibitor paint and it will stop the rust and you can paint over it

there are paints that you can paint directly onto the rusted metal. just remove the loose flakey stuff, then roll it on!

Cool. I think that is what we used. Perhaps I was a bit overzealous with the grinding, but I'd rather error on the side of cleaning off more than needed than error in the other direction.

Well, the way I see it is that I was born and raised in the South. I have ancestors that fought and died under that flag. And if people think that the war was fought over slavery, then they need a history lesson. I happen to be proud of the flag and the soldiers that fought for the South. But, thank you for your input anyway, and YHVH bless.
@IanRobinsonGlobal

I have ancestors that fought on both sides. My fathers side fought out of Missouri and my Mothers out of Connecticut. I was raised in Nevada so I'm about as far from the South as one can get. I spent a bunch of time in Louisiana and I loved my time driving across the South. All my research leads me to believe that it actually was about slavery though. Here's an excellent article from one of the most well researched guys I know: thoughtcatalog.com/ryan-holiday/2014/04/319406/ I'd be happy to think differently about the cause of the civil war if you've got some good sources to recommend. Either way, I respect your right to free speech. That's what makes this country great. Thank you for not getting angry. I know this is a heated topic and I'm happy to read that you're enjoying these videos.

+Ian Robinson That sound good brother, I really don't get angry when people comment. There is such a thing as Freedom of Speech, lol. We all have our points of view, and as you said, that's what makes this country great. I'll try to find some of the research that I came across over time. Y'all take care, and keep on building, I really enjoy y'all's videos, and your wife's a hoot, lol.
