I'm 77 yrs old. I find a solution to worrying abt the future is to have an estate lawyer draw up a trust to define what I want in the future when I am gone to give my property and belongings to my heirs. No more worrying abt the future in terms of material possessions. Very liberating!

I learned about these feelings growing up as a kid. I didn't have any friends. My family didn't love me. I was always pushed away by their attitudes. I learned to live without expecting anything in return. I stopped caring about anything that anyone told me. Things didn't matter at all. I learned to live day by day. I didn't miss anything, because nothing mattered. I wore, and still wear comfortable things that I feel good wearing. I don't care how I look to anyone else. I never thought people felt this way at older age. I felt this as soon as I was born. I'm 58 now. I live the way I want.I stopped caring a long time ago.

I stopped doing many things when I retired at 65. I have always been the type of person who doesn't do many things that I don't want to do so it was not difficult to give things up. I'm 74 now and stay up late, sleep in and have my slow mornings with my laptop before I even think about any thing else. When I want to do things I do and love my life.

I can relate to many of these suggestions. One thing I am trying to do is break the habit of "negative fortune telling." I have tried my entire life to solve today what may happen in the future. I would say 95% of the time none of those gloom and doom scenarios I conjured up ever came to pass. I made myself and everyone around me anxious and miserable. Such a waste of time and energy.

Stylish clothes are comfortable to me. I feel better when I’m happy about how I look. I get frustrated with the sloppy attire of most people these days.

I'm the same way, although I WILL say I don't put on makeup every time I leave the house any more...just a bit of eyebrow pencil and lipstick. I stopped going to Walmart because no matter what time of day it is, you see people of all ages wearing pajamas.
@lindadavidson68133 күн бұрын
I have never been particularly stylish. I am a worker bee! Worked in healthcare for 40 years and now I am retired and have a cat sanctuary. I am comfortable in functional clothes that are washable and I don't care how I look bc I am happy. So we can all embrace what is important to us, that's the joy of being older. Btw, I DON'T wear pajamas anywhere!!!!

1. The habit of saying yes to ecerything. 2. Perfectionism & self-criticism 3. The idea that you have to stay busy to be fulfilled. 4. The urge to hold grudges or harbour resentment. 5. The pursuit of keeping up with the younger generations 6.excessive worrying about what others think 7. Excessive possessions 8. The desire to plan every detail 9.need to control every situation or outcome 10. Negative self-talk about changes in ourselves 11. Desire to be always right (less important than peace) 12. Comparing yourself to others. (Comparison is thief of joy. Every has own unique journey with unique joys & challenges) 13 Rushing thru daily routine/ activites 14. Pressure to accumulate more material wealth. 15. Habit of overthinking the future

I stopped the "say yes to everything" habit 37 years ago. People seem to expect you to say yes, and when you politely refuse, they have all sorts of names for you (the one that rhymes with "itch" comes to mind, lol!) There was a point in my previous church where I was carrying 6 volunteer positions at once, and at least 3 of them I was the "head." My husband looked at me and said, "the time you're spending working for free, you could have a paying job." He was absolutely right. One volunteer position is enough for anybody.

My sister, 10 years younger, I always tried to guide and support during her entire life. I was always worried, stressed out and felt the consequences of her irresponsible behavior that I could see the consequences of, but she never could. I finally realized I could not and would not ever "fix"her. I gave up trying and went no contact. It was amazingly freeing. I finally have peace. I am not responsible for her anymore! 🙂

@@TheElderCompass By reminding myself of all I have done for her in the last 50+ years. I keep notes of it. And how she has recked the lives of others, (who have told me) And reviewing all the reckless decisions she has made that lead to where she is today. It gets easier. She has a mental illness and addictions she refuses to deal with. At first it was a challenge, but then, I pull out the notes, and feel more at peace. 🤔 I have done way above the call the duty.

@@BonnieJean4578 God places both you and her on this earth to learn your own unique lessons. For you, it may be the journey of understanding boundaries, compassion, and the strength to let go. For her, it’s a different path-one that only she can walk, with its own challenges and growth. Whether you choose to intervene or step back, your awareness of your role and actions is part of your spiritual journey. In the end, we all will grow in our own ways, finding wisdom and depth through individual experiences. Trust that her lessons, like yours, will unfold in their own time.

This list is ridiculous as advice for seniors. Not only would it be easier to change these attitudes at 25 years old, it would yield a better life overall. After 70, what's immediate and urgent is to let go of smoking and alcohol and high sugar and starch food choices i.e. being kind to liver and kidneys, regular, non-stressful short but daily exercise and stretching, letting oneself get more sleep, these are very urgent things to pay attention to. Following this, learning to say no when appropriate, relaxing more, and so on, will follow. It's a promise.
