I love this and wanted to add on. I read a research paper awhile back that said silicone is almost as bad as plastic so you might want to look into that, especially like silpats. I have a fix for aluminum foil. If you buy pans from a restaurant store, think stainless steel chafing dishes at catering events. You can buy them in small sizes for relatively cheap and you can buy stainless steel lids that fit them. There's one size that's close to a 9x13 I think it's a half pan and bread pan size. Also the closest to an airfryer I can find is the Gourmia all in one 14 quart air fryer, it doesn't have coatings and it does cook more like an air fryer than convection oven. Also a lot of enameled cast iron contains lead. Lead is popping up in a lot of things lately, Staub seems to be the only brand that is likely safe from lead from what I've read. Have you found an electric kettle that is fully stainless steel. I bought one that's supposed to be but I suspect there is an aluminum bottom.

Thank-you for bringing awareness to us on this topic. I have known about this stuff for years, but certain family members and friends think I’m being a fanatic, particularly since I’m so type A to begin with. Also I’m a minimalist, (and they’re not), so more of a challenge to get them to take me serious. I recently got rid of dishes and mugs made in China, (my Starbucks mugs), 😢, because China uses so much lead in producing these items. Thanks so much again!❤😊

This is all good advice. I am almost 80 and have been using Griswold cast iron pans my whole adult life. I have frying pans in sizes 3-12 and they are the best non stick pans you will ever buy. I use a Griswold Dutch oven, muffin pans, and griddles. The frying pans stack neatly inside each other that saves room in the closet and they are all almost 100 years old. To clean them all I need is one drop of dish detergent and a rag to swish around. Sometimes I will use a non scratch pad, but they clean up really easily. I also still use my grandmother's stainless steel Revereware pots and pans from the 1930s and stainless soup pots. I never use aluminum foil for cooking, only to wrap food for the refrigerator occasionally and never heat anything in plastic. I do use plastic freezer safe containers to put things in the freezer or leftovers in the refrigerator, but don't put anything in them that is hot. Almost all of the ovenware is glass ( with glass lids) except for the cookie sheets that are enameled steel. Also the stainless flatware I use is Oneida purchased in 1967. I do have a Cosori air fryer but have never smelled any odor coming from it. Coffee pots are another that can give off a chemical smell. I use my old Corning percolator that was a wedding gift in 1967. I have never had any health issues (knock on wood) so I must be doing something right.

Brava and thank you, dear one!!! I very recently tossed so many of these toxins from my kitchen: plastic of all kinds: cutting boards, cooking utensils, storage containers. Also tossed any pan that has a coating, so now I solely cooked with stainless, glass and cast iron pans!! For many years now I've refused to drink or eat anything from a plastic bottle/container; would never reheat same in the microwave! NEVER have I cooked with/stored food in aluminum foil. As it's getting more difficult to buy foods that aren't enclosed in plastic...I've gone almost totally "label free"...that is, nothing packaged, such as veggies and fruit. I've starting buying products produced in Italy to avoid the toxins found in US produced foods! So glad I didn't fall for the air fryer craze! Got so tired of replacing expensive Nespresso machines as they stopped functioning properly (also got tired shipping them to be repaired, something I'm not sure the company has done in quite a few years) and at the same time I gave up the toxic PODS!

I read in a news article that there was a mistake made in the study that said black plastic used in utensils. The danger was highly exaggerated all because of a mistake in their mathematical calculations.

Are the ceramic frying pans bad? I thought they were safe…
@thekat2689 сағат бұрын
. I think it depends on the quality. The cheaply made pans have a very thin ceramic coating that comes off easily. I bought a small pot, it had speckles on the inside like your oven. It has a ceramic coating but was manufactured a looong time ago. Tue coating is still perfect on that pot.

I am 79, use plastic (and some glass now) for food storage of leftovers, also utensils, etc. I am not dead yet from poisoning, and have used plastics since the '60's. I got some new silicone and stainless utensils and transitioning over because they are more heat tolerant. We had lead paint when I was young, used DDT for insect control, no seatbelts in cars, many houses had asbestos siding also. When plastic food containers turn dark (tea color) toss them. I never put plastic containers in micro W. The new ceramic cookware is better, the older skillets were iffy, but when scratched toss them. Liked video.

I like these videos, keep them coming. I have bought an air fryer with a basket made of borosilicate glass and the grill thing to put inside is made of stainless steel - these things exist, just more expensive. I was not aware of the parchment paper, will get rid of it immediately. Also I did not think about drinking glasses which often are not made of coloured glass but of glass with a paint coating on them, thanks for making me aware of that. I am currently using yoghurt glasses (made of glass with a metal lid) to store leftovers in the fridge. I thought about getting glass containers like yours but then the lid is always plastic again which kind of defeats the purpose. What worries me is that food from the supermarket, e.g. cheese slices, always are wrapped in plastic touching the food. Even if we went "zero waste" and bought them without wrapping, they have been in plastic wrappings while being transported to the supermarket. Only so much we can do... Overall, thanks for the great video!!

Vinegar can be very useful but when you need something else to clean with you can mix 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol, a couple drops of dish soap & fill the rest of bottle with water. You can also add 5-10 drops of essential oils for extra cleaning power (many are anti-microbial, anti-viral & anti-bacterial) plus they smell great!

We use glass jars or glass bowls to store food with. We use wooden utensils or oxo silicon spatulas/stainless steel utensils/ no bagged microwaved popcorn/white dishware and clear goblet glassware/stainless steel water bottles/pyrex bakeware. I purchased bakeware with their own lids to avoid using foil whenever possible. You can also put parchment paper between the food and the foil when baking until you can switch over to pyrex bakeware with their own lids which is much safter. For a non stick result you can buy diamond bottom griddles and pans to avoid using nylon frying and other type pans. We use the glass items for food storage because it doesn't have to be replaced hardly ever and saves tons of money. Do not have a air fryer but we have an oven with an air fryer button and the interior of that oven is stainless steel. Thanks~

A few years ago I purchased an Air Fryer. The manufacturer recommended running it first without any food in it. So the first time I went to use it I thought I would try it in my garage with the garage doors opened. The chemical odor was so strong that it was unbearable. It gave me such a headache. Like you, I washed it up and put it away in my cupboard. I could smell that odor for weeks. Many people told me just keep on using it and that odor will soon disappear. I tried it twice and then just decided to get rid of it. It just wasn't worth the convenience. I have a convection oven and I get the same results with it as I would with an air fryer and don't have the fear of burning down the house or ingesting all of those chemicals.

Pans sprayed with aerosol oils tend to form the brown gunk that looks similar to yours. Decades ago, the manufacturer of my pans recommended not using those sprays as it binds to the pan. I don’t have nonstick pans and don’t use them but my husband insists on using them since he claims it’s easier. He cleans them afterwards but I go behind him and properly clean them to return them to their original appearance. A good quality pan will last a lifetime if properly cared for. I had teflon skillets and enamel pots and pans in the 70’s and early 80’s, tossed the teflon ones, donated the enamel set as they were in good shape and have my other items purchased in the late 80’s that are still in great shape. I hand wash my pots and pans since any residue that remains and is then reheated makes it more difficult to remove. I don’t find it difficult but it does take more time and effort after my husband uses the spray oil.

Also when the pod gets punctured and the hot water goes through it you get the microplastics from the paper top AND the plastic pod in your cup! How nice! I'm excited about the two cupboards in my kitchen that will be empty today! Oh and I will be sad to see my enameled cast iron pot with lid go but it's scratched. I use stainless and my 2xgreat grandmother's cast iron pans. Those nonstick muffin tins and baking pans are going too, as well as the plastic cutting boards! I think I'm up to 3 cupboards now LOL Thank you!!!! I did recently use an older enameled dutch oven with a lid to store bird seed in. The heavy lid keeps the critters out!

Great information. Well, done. I only use stainless steel pans. I only use glass. I never bought into the plastic food storage containers. I use stainless steel silverware. I do use foil, but I will never buy that again. Never bought a fancy coffee maker. I have a drip stainless steel electric pot. My stove/oven is an induction cooktop. I love it. Easy to clean. I hate the smell of gas, and it is very hard to clean a gas stove. I will be changing out a few products in the coming year. I do have a question. What about the bristles on our toothbrushes that we use during the day?

For any keurig fans, the company cameron's coffee makes an eco pod that works in keurig and it's compostable so it's not plastic or aluminum and they are the same price if not cheaper than comparable brands. Also if possible in your kitchen, open a window when you cook and a lot of the gas kinda fumes should dissipate as well to reduce the amount you're breathing

Your video finally inspired me to replace my black plastic utensils with stainless steel. I want so much to replace all my Rubbermaid plastic storage containers but I find the glass versions so heavy, especially for carrying an entire lunch when I have a long walk to work. My solution for now is to use plastic only for cold foods and then transfer them to glass when reheating. I'm slowly going to phase them out by not replacing them as they crack or inevitably get lost/misplaced.

Yes, that was very interesting and I want more... Most of these things I don't use or I'm on the edge of decluttering them. In some cases it's not so easy because they're *so* practical. For example, I had cooking spoons from plastic when I was young (it was a wedding gift) and they're gone a long time ago and they'll never come back. There's no reason to not use wood instead. But I already decluttered a steel pan and bought a non-stick-pan, because in the steel pan everything sticked to the ground. Now I think perhaps I should have learned how to use it... But I'm not shure if I should give it a second trial. Also, I work outside and have to put my water in the backpack every day. Using a glass bottle really is no option. It would break, if the glass wouldn't be so thick that it can't. And those metal bottles look as if I can't see what's in it. They might get very dirty, won't they? I found some on the streets and they looked awful inside... Perhaps somebody put milk in them? I use plastic bottles from one of these machines which put CO² in the water. I don't want my water to sprinkle, but the bottles should be safe and they're light and stable... More or less! Because... they have a lot of scratches! 🥴 So... Perhaps I should declutter those items.

Haven’t used most of these forever. But sad so many require so much effort on our part to avoid; it should NOt be Our burden (to not ingest/ absorb toxins). Too expensive, but still felt like an essential (will last forever)- just gifted my daughter & I multipurpose Klean Kanteen Rise food boxes. They have only the most beneficially sustainable production/ model. I saved, then had to splurge during ‘Black FRI deals.

One thing that came to mind while watching this….the baking pans, cookie sheets, muffin pans, etc. that you buy at some department stores that are made of some kind of corrosive metal, and are obviously painted with a metallic paint to look like stainless steel. They are a poor substitute, and I actually talked a stranger out of purchasing a sheet pan, after he asked me what I thought of this item. I called his attention to the obvious metallic paint covering the pan, and pointed out that a stainless steel, or glass. pan would be more expensive, but non-reactive and a safer option. The dollar stores sell these pans, as well. It is obviously metallic paint over cheap metal, and once you’ve seen it, you can spot it easily.

I have not used nonstick coated cooking equipment since the days of Teflon (I guess about 45 years ago) which, they assured us, was completely safe. As it turned out, that was a big lie. So, no more nonstick for me. That does mean, unfortunately, that there are gadgets I would love to have (like an air fryer) but refuse to use. I also will not use aluminium or plastic. It’s glass or stainless steel all the way for me. By the way, if your glass cooking dish/bowl does not have a lid, try inverting a larger dish/bowl over the dish/bowl you are cooking in. It works for me 😁

I use non toxic pots and pans, a wooden cuttingboard, wooden utensils, a stainless steel colander, a kettle made from glass and stainless steel, I make coffee by hand in a ceramic filter, I make tea with a stainless steel teafilter and so on.
