I spent 2 weeks in Iceland in May 2012. Since it was before the tourist season, I enjoyed the most touristic places being almost free of people. Dettifoss... maybe 3 or 4 cars parked nearby. Jokulsarlon... no queues and only 2 small boats for like 8 people total. This was magic.

Not sure I'd classify Blue Lagoon as a "tourist trap", exactly. It's definitely catered to tourists, but it's also a legitimately spectacular place located in an unforgettably unique landscape, and has the benefit of being about 20 minutes from the airport. It's expensive, but not unreasonable for someone who, between airfare, lodging, and car rental, is probably spending a couple thousand on their trip anyway, and after a long and exhausting flight, it's a pleasant way to relax for a few hours before continuing on. That said, for any time other than the morning of your arrival in Iceland, I agree that the Secret Lagoon is a better option. It's cheaper, and has a more natural setting. And while the Blue Lagoon water is naturally heated, it is artificially pumped. By contrast, the Secret Lagoon is visibly fed by natural hot springs that are adjacent to the pool. It's a much smaller pool than the Blue Lagoon, but also much less crowded.

Here are a few more. Most land in Iceland is privately owned (Like the overwhelming majority of it and i mean beaches, mountains, lakes and lavafields anything you can see really) and while you have the right to walk anywhere you want (Unless its agricultural fields) you can't drive on private land without permission from landowners. If you have to drive through closed gates or through someone's parking lot changes are it's private. Now most landowners are pretty chill and don't mind you exploring, but they want you to ask permission first, its usually a pretty big deal for farmers to be respected enough to be asked permission. Just because the road is marked on a map doesnt mean its public. Alot of buisneses related to tourism in Iceland are run by small time farmers. People who live on their land and run their buisnes out from their homes. But just because they run them from their home, doesnt mean they want you in their house. So when you find yourself on a farm, be it for an activity or just housing. Don't mindlessly walk into someones home, look around, ask yourself does this look like it could be someone's home and if it does dont enter. Rather try to see if you find someone around and if you can't find them either knock on the front door or call their phone number. Most people living in rural Iceland typically don't lock their frontdoors and so its incredible easy (And really common) for you to accidentally up in someone's living room. It is not uncommon for farm animals to be pushed on Icelandic highways in rural areas. Be it horses, sheep or cattle. Farmers actually have legal priority on highways over cars. It can be incredibly annoying when it happens to you, but if it does please remain calm, slow down your car, be patient and just wait. Either let the herd pass you or wait until the farmer tries to give you an opening which they will usually do as soon as they have the opportunity too. Don't try and push through the herd, not only is it incredibly dangerous and can scatter the herd for the farmer (which can take hours to bring back) but it is also illegal. Try to be respectful and understanding. Lastly, try to udnerstand that the high prices in Iceland are not caused by the greed of the avrage person. There are many reasons for them, inclusing being an isolated island where monopolies are easy, almost everything needed to be inported, high taxes, high interests rates, a weak currency etc etc, the list goes on. Just remember that even though the country is expensive for you to visit, it is even more expensive for those who live in it and for people to be able to make a living they have to price their services high. So don't take your frustrations on them.

The amount of snow in Iceland depends on the region, and changes every year. In the North and the East, you can have plenty of snow. In the South, some years can be very snow heavy, while other years they are not. When it comes to Icelandic weather, never say never.

We were in Iceland in May this year and absolutely loved it! Thankfully I watched some videos like this one so had a good idea of what not to do. We took reusable water bottles(we always do no matter where we go) and we even brought small thermal coffee mugs too. We shopped at Kronan which was a great store, but bought our bread from the Sandholt which was right beside our hotel, great restaurant and amazing baked goodies too!! Highly recommend. Our hotel had really good black out curtains so eye masks went required. I agree with you about the wind! We never went anywhere without our warm jackets, gloves and hats, and usually had our rain jackets and pants with us too. Iceland is amazing and beautiful! Taak for these kinds of videos! I think I watched your video on Norway as well, which we travelled to from Iceland!! Our favourites were Snaefelsnes and Glacier Lagoon! No crowds at all in May!! And great weather!

I wouldn't say there's very little snow in Iceland. There's very little snow in the capital in the south of Iceland, but Iceland in general gets a decent amount of snow overall. But it is true that Iceland doesn't get as much snow as you'd expect considering the country's latitude on the globe, that's a result of the Mexican gulf stream which does heat up Iceland's oceans and consequently raises the average temperature.

I lived in Iceland for 2 years 99-00. The old Blaa' Lonið (Blue Lagoon until the new one on 2000) was locals only after 1800 in the winter. The danger is keeping your eyes on the road due to the amazing landscapes, hard not to look at while driving...in both Norway and Iceland. The main thing Not to Do is eat the famous hot dog. Go to the Sea Baron instead. If you have a way to get there, Dynjandi is the great uncrowded waterfall. If you have a big budget go to the Silica hotel, with its private lagoon, instead of the Blue. The Blue Lagoon used to be free; it was the outflow pond of a power plant. Locals build a wood changing house.

I was at many of those attractions that are free and I do not regret it. (you have to pay only for parking at some places) My most favorite experience were East-Fjords... especially route to the vilage of Seyðisfjörður (yeah, don't ask me how to pronounce that). And more than Gulfoss I liked the Dettifoss in the east part of the country. It was totally breathtaking. And I wasn't in West-Fjords yet, but I hope I will return and check them too. Having own car (or rented one) is the best option to see and experience as much as possible.

Don’t let go of your car door when you open it. Gusts come out of nowhere and can bend your door until it hits the side of the car! You will have to pay for repair. 18. Don’t make small talk with bartenders or other service workers. They are busy and SO tired of tourists. They’re not impressed that you’re American and chose to visit Iceland. 19. Don’t ask anyone where Björk lives. They are so tired of foreigners talking about Björk or Sigur Rós. 20. Don’t publicly categorize them as Scandinavian. now I know why tourists drives 60km/h on 90 :/ ... small correction here - no one will bother stoping you if you go over speed limit 5-10 km/h. If you don't do crazy and risky stuff or go really fast in traffic no one care if you go a little faster when it's clear road. More important to know is NOT to stop everywhere you wish because you see some nice view or northern light. Don't worry! That mountain will not run away. Find some safe place to stop not freaking middle of the road! Just because road may look like a side country road doesnt mean there is no heavy traffic coming. Dont be a pain for people that lives here and want to travel to their place without slowing down because there is a horse on the field :)

There´s no difference in flavour or the way its looking. So avoid buying a beautifull looking package and search for regular ones. Most places, especially places that provide service will accept tips, so go nuts if you like. But as she says, it's not expected and you should not feel like you have to. I work in the service industry myself in Iceland and i always appreciate a tip. I don't need it to live, but it's nice regardless and there are no hard feelings if i don't get any.

Why are you showing sceneries from Norway?

I had a friend from Reykjavik. It was funny, 'cause we'd have over a meter of snow and -30 c (colder with the wind chill) in Chicago, but it would be only freezing or above freezing in Iceland. lol

Yeah the North Atlantic current actually keeps the island's weather more mild than most people would think

I wish I would have had the sense to visit your country when I was young and mobile. It appears to be a wonderful place.

It's not much snow on the south side of Iceland. If you want snow visit the north.

Our liquor stores in the U.S close on Sundays as well. I didn't expect that to be a thing in Iceland. I just figured it had to do with Christian puritan tradition 😆

☺️ seems like!! It’s the same in Norway 🙂 I think if you do the same in England the revolution will begin 😈

It's Christian related for Iceland as well. In fact, most stores are closed on Sunday in Iceland, even more than the US. Historically, it's because Sunday is a "holy" day. It's not as bad as it used to be, but going shopping or utilizing any services on a Sunday is still difficult in Iceland, so plan accordingly.
