Invest in dental care!! Didn’t figure that out until after my gum line started receding and that can only be fixed with surgery… Mouthwash. Good floss. Pro-enamel toothpaste. An electronic toothbrush if you can afford it, or if not, regularly replace yours. Dental care is very expensive and often not covered by medical insurance. This is no joke.

I let family give gifts to my kids if they want to. My husband’s family enjoys it. When inviting my kids’ friends or my husband and my friends to a birthday celebration I write “no gifts please” on the invitation. Some people still bring a gift but it really cuts down on the amount of stuff that accumulates in our house.

Lol they’re not corporate, can’t expect orange juice out of a lemon squeeze. At my small business I give my employees 2 weeks payed vacation and 2 weeks for emergencies or things that don’t need to be explained to me because I trust my employees enough not to need an explanation about everything. At a corporation you are just a number on a page rather than a human, much more disposable that way, much less empathy towards the employees

I'd add dental stuff in particular. Paying for a cleaning twice a year, getting a good electric toothbrush, and regular checkups all take money but you really only get one set of teeth and gums and it can really compromise the quality of your life if something happens to them.

As someone who had to pay $5,000 for a dental implant over the last year due to a crack in the root of my tooth that couldn't be repaired, I fully agree with this. My surrounding teeth have shifted and eating is no longer quite as enjoyable as before. I'm now trying to save up in case Invisalign can help, even though I already had braces as a kid. I'm only 32 now.

Respectfully disagreeing as a twenty something... all these things are important to start as _soon_ as you can claim yourself as an independent on taxes, _not_ once you're 30! These are all longevity, self-care, and social happiness items. Very important to start early so these don't all feel like "catch up"... yes, your budget will be smaller in your 20s but the proportions of your budget shouldn't have to entirely shift as soon as you start to feel "old". Minus the spending on kids, that's another story.

I appreciate the point of spending on other people’s kids. I grew up in a low-income working class community and I’m thankful for all the adults who had the disposable income to buy me treats, books, and take me to places like museums and movies. Pooling together resources to give children experiences and cultural capital their parents otherwise couldn’t afford is awesome all around. As they say with raising kids, it takes a village!

Really just invest in your health. Go to the doctor(s), full check up. Dentist. Some sort of movement. Yes, everyday. Some more intense movement 3x week. Water. Yes, 2 liters. No, coffee doesn't count. Eat your veggies and fruit. Invest in a nutritionist that matches your beliefs or interests, for a few months.

Everyone’s hydration needs vary. 2 liters can be too much for some. Coffee DOES in fact count. So long as you’re not drinking more than 4 cups daily. It’s only dehydrating if you don’t drink it regularly.

The gifts is one that is always a budget buster unless you plan ahead. Even just saving $20/month for holidays can make a difference. We have specific dollar amounts for family and our kids that we follow. We keep a tracking list on a planner of when birthdays are and holidays so we know when the money will be needed and how much to have set aside for it.

I'm 26 and invested in a trainer to teach me how to use machines and free weights. My doctor was telling me for years that I needed to gain weight for my overall health. I was fairly active (walking my dog daily) but had been the same weight for over 10 years and didn't feel like I needed to. After 3 months with my trainer, I'm so much happier with my body then I was before. I feel confident that I can take these lessons and continue to do it on my own, now that I know how.

PSA if you own a house in a cold climate like Canada, the small room humidifiers will not cut it. We’re getting a furnace humidifier installed at our house this week to combat the 15% humidity levels in our townhouse where we are constantly running 2 room humidifiers. This will be the best money I spend this year for my family’s comfort plus they last 10+ years.

I'm the same way when I have to watch ads from someone else playing youtube. I watch youtube a ton and hardly ever watch tv so it makes more sense for me (I don't pay for any streaming subscriptions, but I have access to a couple for the rare occasion I want it).

Not quite thirty yet, but highly agree on blood tests. I am unfortunately in that chronic illness group and my body is very bad at making Vitamin D and my medication messes up my B12. I would add to this though, if you snore and are always tired, get a sleep lab done! I got a CPAP last year and people are not joking when they say it's life changing.

Blood test! Definitely a necessity. I have not been feeling well or motivated to do anything and it has been affecting my mental and physical health. Discuss the concerns with my Dr and found out I was extremely Vitamin D deficiency. Been taking supplements and I've been feeling so much better!

No, spending money on other people's kids assumes you live in a certain community. You should have a total budget for friends and a total budget for each family member. I live in a city where many aren't married with kids by their 30s, or even 40s. Maybe your family members also didn't decide to have kids or you're not related to many kids. Friends with kids don't deserve more of your budget for their choices. 😉

Posture and good shoes are so important! Your spine and feet will carry you through life. Take care of them. Strength training doesn't necessarily require buying anything, but (if you're medically able) it's important to maintain muscle mass that tends to go down after 30.

when you hunch over, you are engaging your trap muscles which leads to overactive traps. to counteract this, try stretching/exercising the back muscles - rear delts, lower back (erector spinae) really helps with correcting posture!!

I definitely relate to the whole "feel like your body is falling apart" thing. After my third child was born, I constantly felt like my body was falling apart. I could barely lift my child, my back was in constant agony, and a was getting injured easily. It turns out that I *was* falling apart: I had a three finger width diastisis recti and no functional core strength, so other muscles in my body were compensating, causing me to be in constant pain. Thankfully I found The Tummy Team (I am not affiliated) and through one of their online courses was able to close my diastisis and regain my functional core strength. Turns out that years of poor parenting posture had exacerbated diastisis caused by pregnancy. Good posture is so important! So what I mean to say with this story is that if you feel as though your body is falling apart, listen to what it is telling you. It means something is wrong, but treatment is available.

Time is money. I agree. I also “purchase” things and services when I could do them myself (probably) for another reason: helping my community and friends. I suppose I could buy a lawnmower and mow and care for my own lawn (I’m a senior homeowner), but I’m not the strongest person around, I inherited my dad’s gangrene thumb, and an old family friend owns a lawn service. So I spend more money to take care of my lawn, but I know it’s safer for me, the lawn looks much better, and I’m helping to support a local business. I save on other things instead.

With phones plans, the better company will depend on where you live. Out in the back woods or farm country? Probably Verizon, that's where they specialize with offering service in places other companies can't. Big city? Sprint or any cheap company will probably work fine. Especially if you frequently use wifi instead of data
