I'm going down the recycled denim rabbit hole on KZbin. I am loving this look! I also love that I have a use for my old jeans that will likely end up in landfill, despite donating to Goodwill. Brilliant!! As to the weight, I made regular quilting cotton, batting, fleece quilt. That thing weighed a ton. I can't imagine how heavy the denim version would be.

Thanks so much and have fun going down that rabbit hole! It is definitely a really heavy quilt and nice and warm too!

Thanks for all your tips and suggestions. I am just learning quilting and have made one jean quilt with ragged edges. I did not use a batting sice my backing was a flannel sheet. It turned out comfy, fluffy, and heavy. I plan to make several more. Love jean quilts.

Hi thank you so much for this video. I’m about to embark on a denim blanket. Mine is going to be a picnic blanket. The back is a tartan fleece middle layer is a waterproof mattress protector and the top an assortment of denim. Sadly charity shops are. It open for me to go and buy some more denim som8 hope I have enough. I’m making the centre a droughts board then one corner will have a tic tax toe grid. Tomorrow is the day I sit and plan it out

I really like the design of your quilt! I used navy blue chenille tape to bind the denim quilt I made. It created a neat texture that framed the quilt nicely. The fuzzy texture just seemed natural looking with the denim.

I like to use 1/2” seam allowance instead of the usual 1/4” it helps the seams to lay flat when pressing them open

Thanks for sharing your tips. One of my first projects was a nine-patch made out of jeans from everyone in the family. I have not finished it but I plan to, it got very heavy and I was new to quilting, sewing in general, so it overwhelmed me. I still have pairs of everyone's jeans though and I need to move them out! : ) God Bless.
@CreatewithClaudia4 жыл бұрын
These quilts definitely get heavy, but they sure are cozy. Thanks for watching.
@jerib24464 жыл бұрын
I've made several denim quilts. My tip would be don't use the stretchy denim. At least for me, that's my policy. Also I use a layer of flannel for the batting.
@marlenesmithies72344 жыл бұрын
Not many non stretch jeans about today.
@debo47064 жыл бұрын
Most men’s jeans don’t stretch.
@tearose3763 Жыл бұрын
Do you need to stabilize even with non stretch jeans.
@CreatewithClaudia Жыл бұрын
You can, but you don't need to.
@draishalove4 жыл бұрын
My question is regarding the stabilizer. Is it something that you iron on and you intentionally make it smaller than the patch itself? You were talking about pressing the seams Open because if you don't it adds bulk to it will the stabilizers overall make it the quilts more bulky does it add to it at all? Thank you in advance and very beautiful by the way.
@CreatewithClaudia4 жыл бұрын
Hi - That stabilizer was the piece I had and I wanted to show the contrast between it and the denim. If I make another quilt I would use it and take it all the way to the edges. The stabilizer is very lightweight, but you are right, it would add a bit more bulk. Thanks for watching.

When you quilt with denim do you use 1/4 or 1/2 seam allowance . I am finding the 1/4 inch to small . The denim frays a lot as I am working with the quilt
@CreatewithClaudia2 жыл бұрын
I use a 1/4" but lots of people use the 1/2" and it works really well for them regarding fraying. Thanks for stopping by!.

Is this your own quilt design? Love it. I just pulled out a lg. box of old jeans all cotton, I sure wish they still made still made them for women. ( if I wanted spandex, I’d go back to the 80’s, LOL) The only new 100%. cotton jeans are Wrangler men’s jeans at Walmart ( read label). I’ve have wanted a denim quilt since the 70’s.thanks for all the great tips, LOVE YOUR QUILT! 👍👍👍

Do you think your scissors became dull because the denim wasn’t all cotton?
@CreatewithClaudia4 жыл бұрын
Good question. I don't know. I used lots of 100% denim too.
@rhiannonsanford60294 жыл бұрын
It’s likely because denim is a thick material, it dulls blades and needles quickly.
@joandorsey22423 жыл бұрын
I altered thousands of jeans over a 30 year period. I cut both legs at the same time. Rarely had to sharpen my shears. I saved the cut off pieces and have made many denim quilts with them.
@jolenepatton79353 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tips. Im about to take on my first quilt. With my hubbys old 501 levis. I have a question about the raw edges of the denim pieces on the inside. Do they fray?? I dont think im going to use a batting, as the denim is heavy enough, and ill just back it with a heavier cotton. But i am concerened about tose pieces fraying on the inside. Im kinda ocd when it comes to that stuff (I always back stitch AND tie my seam threads) great video, thanks!
@CreatewithClaudia3 жыл бұрын
Glad you liked the video. It does fray a bit on the back side of the quilt top, but once it's quilted with (in my case batting & backing) with your backing you don't see it. I've washed mine a couple of times on gentle and there has been no problem. Maybe try a small quilt or a sample just to get a feel for it before taking on a bigger one. Thanks for watching!
@athenaburrus76563 жыл бұрын
You could serge the edges, or zigzag if you have no serger available. I am sure this will kill the fraying. Im am considering this myself, as I am making one for a friend out of her recently deceased hubbys jeans. I would cry as hard as she would if it falls apart

i can't hear anything over the extremely LOUD noise, that I believe is generally reserved for some sort of background effect. I don't believe that I've ever heard it as the main event. which is really unfortunate, since I was so eager to watch and hopefully learn how to make my first denim quilt. If possible can someone let me know if there is a way for me to edit the noise out and still be able to listen to the actual tutorial? please, help me if there is advice out there. Thanks so much B.
