I'm in the US. What type of store is Bunning's? Also, I'd love to visit Australia some day! ...Possibly even live there, as my childhood neighbors, one of whom still lives next to my mother, have a son and daughter who have lived all over Australia, since the early 1980s, and they love the country... Everyone I've known, who has visited anywhere from Sydney, Melbourne or Perth, to Tassie or out in the middle of the bushland, has had nothing but the greatest things to say about Australia! I can't wait to see it in person... my own little "piece of Australia," is our bearded dragon "Punky" (after the American 1980s sitcom "Punky Brewster," as my stepdaughter's married name is 'Brewster,' and our beardie's personality totally fits the character of "Punky" ...this is our 3rd one. The Mrs. had one before we met, so its her 4th).

Good idea. Allow me to suggest something. After 20 years in the Australian army I have seen my fair share of the inside of these plastic jerries when they get broken. I strongly advise you empty them and allow to dry with the caps off if you're having any length of time between trips. Otherwise you'll get a coating of slime/mould growing on the inside. First time I saw this we got ALL of our jerries and gave them a washout with a chemical (can't recall its name) to sterilise the insides. Also, just prior to reusing them give them a quick rinse. Bugs love to crawl inside.

A good idea that suits your needs perfectly Michael. I had the same annoyance for years with lugging jerrycans in and out (and also those silly little taps at the bottom that break off) so came up with a similar but different method that suits any shape jerrycan with a large screw top. Blanked off the bottom hole, purchased a caravan sink pump for $10 at a camping show, used a hole saw to cut the correct sized hole in the centre of the large cap and screwed up the plastic hex nut on the underside. Went to Bunnings and got 600mm of the appropriate sized clear plastic food grade tube and forced it onto the bottom of the pump and screwed the lid back on. The tube reaches right to the bottom and now I can pump out water as needed and get almost all that is in the jerrycan before having to pull it out and refill. So far the plastic tube has stayed on for around 2 years with no clamp.True I don't have a hose with tap like you but I find this works extremely well and may be of interest to those who watch this video. Keep them coming!

Great clip mate obviously your not thinking of using garden hose to drink from as this will make water taste weird you need potable water hose to have no taste On the filling side if you fit another of the barbed fittings into the filler cap in the jerry can with the left over hose you have as a bleed of vent tube you can direct the over flow to a prefers location when filling without any mess in the truck This is what I have in my Ute works great So for just a few more bucks it will be more easy to fill the tank Cheers

Hey a little tip, and maybe it's OCD on my part since the stuff works so well in general, but if you wind the teflon tape the other way so that it "drags" the exposed tape end instead of "pushing" the exposed end when you screw it together it can help things seal up reliably. As always thanks for the video and wherever you happen to be these days I hope your adventures are going well!

As someone who has handled hazardous/volatile liquids and gases for several years.... that is the only correct way to use that tape. Also make sure you wrap in the opposite direction you'll be screwing in. Build a 10+ gallon ABS rooftop tank you can pressurize...or spend an assload of money and buy one. Either way, a roof-top tank makes more sense to me. Adding pressure + sprayer just adds benefits. Here in the States on BLM land during fire season, we're required to carry water + shovel to put out fires...if my exhaust starts a small burn, easy to put out without pulling out my fire extinguisher. ABS is black, makes warm water...easy shower. Drinking? Not 100%, actually....but from what I've read ABS is OK for potable water. Can still carry a jerry can or 2 to top-off when overland.

I would make a water lock breather that vents to outside the cab. It allows you to fill without spilling any internally, allows water to flow out the tap without having to reach in to undo the cap to let air in, it allows you to back fill and it's a dust proof way of making a breather that allows air in and out but no dust ingress. Putting pressured air in will explode your Jerry. Better off buying a diaphragm pump if you want pressurized water as suggested by others.

bunnings have pvc clear flex pipe same sizes would recommend using clear for making sure hose is clean of mold ect. and would probably be cheaper than pope hose and taste less like walking home on a hot summers day and sneaking a drink from someones front yard hose lol.

The US mil spec water cans or the Scepter water cans have two capped outlets on the cap which can be used in a similar fashion. Just lay it on the front edge instead of sitting upright and you can use it as a decent water source.

Nice tip. I would also suggest using portable water hose rather than garden

A black bottle up on the roof rack , gives hot water ( solar ) , great for showers at the end of the day ! :) The added height gives even better water pressure , as well . :)

this actually gave me a good idea. instead of the hose, just go right for the upgraded spigot end perhaps in my case. most seem to come with not the greatest spigots.

I just got back from Fraser Island after a week using 2 x jerrys the "old way" and will be installing your hack for next time. Considering I camped with 2 plumbers you would think they would have advised me of this, youd reckon eh...... great stuff old son.....

Nice. If you use clear vinyl tubing you could hold it up to see the level in your Jerry can. 👍🏻

Great idea but I would use the food safe white hose instead if your using the water for drinking or cooking. This way the water won’t have that garden house taste👍🏻😉

There's BSPP and BSPT, the parrallel thread usually has an o ring to seal the joint, and the tapered thread requires teflon tape or similar to seal effectively.

you forgot to mention the use for the leftover piece of hose. You can leave it near your good garden hose so the housos take that for their bongs instead of chopping up your good hose

Just another Tip/Hack use potable water fittings other wise you will taint the taste of the water. Using standard hose is ok for washing and other uses but can make the water taste foul. (The hotter the environment he worse it tastes) (And yes I will drink out of a garden hose but the difference is I flush water thru it first where out camping you cant afford to waste water in a lot of locations)

I suggest you use food grade hose. Usually white. Used for boats etc. Same idea but safer for drinking.
