May I suggest rebuilding thus rig in sc40 pvc? Cellular core ABS turns brittle under UV, also the joints like to pop loose with vibration. Not to mention that ABS is toxic, and even though this is a shower and not drinking water, you may want to think about it.

He should also use real schedule 40 pvc that's rated for pressure and not the non rated stuff in a big box store.

It may be a little more expensive but I suggest solid core pvc pipe with pressure fittings and 711 pvc glue. ABS cans may say rated for 180psi but left unpainted and in the sun it becomes very brittle. Exposed ABS longevity is very short. Also recommend brass female adapters due to cracking threads on the plastic female ends. Just ideas

Love the idea with the U bend. One issue that I ran into was, when the water begins to run out, outlet would spurt. I had to add a wedge towards the front of the tank so the water wouldn't level out below the outlet.

Thank you! I live in Malaysia but don't have a hot water heater plumbed to my shower. Most days it's ok but during monsoon season the stainless steel holding tank makes chilly showers. However, it's sunny most mornings, even during monsoon season, so I think this pipe set up facing the morning sun would make a nice warm shower around noon time. Yaay!.

Hi mate, greetings from the UK. This is a brilliant idea, I'm well impressed and will be making one of these for my mini bus conversion. On a side note, can you consider making a video with a basic 'mock-up' of one of these to see how much pressure it will take before it splits or blows one of the end caps off, it would be interesting to see where the weak point is and lets face it, everybody loves a KZbin video where something gets blown up!! All the best mate.

I did this for a truck and ran into the online suggestion panel saying that ABS pipe can leach BPA's into your water if exposed to direct sunlight. It's not meant for direct sunlight exposure. It was recommended to paint CPVC or PVC.

was looking to add a shower to a 2 & 1/4 door f150 but was not satisfied with the straight line since the cab is so small this is a really good idea I was a plumber for 4 years I'm pretty sure there is a solid u joint that would bring the 2 longest pieces closer together allowing for more roof rack space definitely will be using your idea tho genius

Nice design. Consider connecting both sides of the shafts with T joints. 4 would add a little weight but could add a couple gallons of capacity, increase rigidity and decrease water movement when 1/2 full. Thanks for sharing!

Nice job, certainly one of the better on KZbin. Worth mentioning that 4” pipe gives you 200mL (0.05 US gal) per inch of pipe. I estimate you to have 8ft of pipe on your roof so your looking at 20 litres(5 gal). Not really enough for a real shower. I managed to squeeze 20ft of 4” pipe on my roof and it is only really enough to have 2 or 3 quick showers and maybe to rinse the dishes for a few days.

great build, I like the idea of shooting the pipes down the middle. Mine goes around the outside. You may want to consider a way to vent the pipe as you fill it or you wont be able to fill it all the way. On my build, I use my spare tire to pressurize the shower. Only needs a quick burst to get pressurized water without messing with a compressor.

Very nice. One thing I'd do different is attaching it in such a way that I could adjust the how level the system is when parked on an incline with maybe up to 10 degrees of adjustability- more parking options if you need a shower. I plan on using a system very similar to this when I get to my box truck build.

A feature to consider but I don't know if necessary, would be some form of baffles in the tube. If the tank was half full it would be about 30lbs able to slosh from front to back and side to side (imagine the body roll if off camber) and it is so high over the center of gravity... just my thoughts- otherwise amazing work and super awesome idea 💡

Ya at 1/2 full it will create a water hammer that could easily blow out the ends of the pvc. Imagine a 30 pound ball slamming forward under a hard breaking situation.
@wyattb995

Good point, wonder how much flow and slosh reduction there is with just adding a few extra bends and turns in the run. Or if slapping a butterfly valve in the center of each long run would do the job well enough.

Now the thing I see that I would do different than what everyone is doing is I would make a smaller diameter tube and make it square and depending on the size of your rv/truck/etc you can add rows for what ever volume you need. This distributes the weight evenly and it also is more surface area for the water to heat up. You could also make it hinged so it could be angled toward the sun. I have seen a similar design from a friend and it would get super hot like too hot but that was in Texas. If I knew I would be dealing with that I might make a cold water mix. You could also just make a separate pvc pipe pump that has a valve for filling but also a valve that connects to the water so you could pressurize it first then release it. Then you could judge the size you need for the length of shower you want. I also have a 12v outlet in the back of my Element and I have a airpump for my tires that I could set to 30 psi and just push a button when its starts to fade.

I really love this idea, I was wanting to build something similar on my rig but Im glad I didnt til now cause I wouldnt of had this much thought into it like the pressure gauge and pump valves I wouldve relied on gravity which probly wouldve never worked. How long does the shower last on full fill up, just curious. Im also looking at having it for water storage to use for cooking as well or would you not recommend the plastic being potable?

You built a P trap. You cannot fully drain the tank if it’s not perfectly level. You need to use “T”’s at the front so both legs are joined at both ends. Then parking slightly nose down will let it fully drain.

I saw the same.... YOu put the water valve literally at the top portion of the end cap.... Won't work, needs to be as low as possible or like Eric said above, a P-trap or even 9 degree elbow at the end with a cap on the end and the valve on the bottom side so the water goes down into it.

I was thinking you could add a low point where the water will sit even at the lowest level, the. plumb a tube from your spigot into that low point, and when the pressure increases the only way for it to escape is to push every last drop of water before it will begin to spurt. Another improvement already mentioned are interior baffles to combat sloshing
