Very well labeled is extremely generous. If it was open, there is no way for them to tell other then reading the ingredients, which is what should have happened but mistakes do happen. Having a small Reeses label at the top right which can be covered if its open is not "very well" labeled.

One of my first pediatric deaths as a paramedic was a 9 year old girl who was severely allergic to nuts including coconuts. Her mother went to get a box cake mix at family dollar but accidentally grabbed a German chocolate cake mix and regular vanilla icing. She noticed her mistake, but assumed only German chocolate icing had coconut; unfortunately she didn’t look at the ingredients. We arrived on scene within four minutes of the call, and approximately 10 min following ingestion of the cake. Her mom carried 2 epipens in her purse that had been sitting in a hot car. The heat damaged the injector mechanism on one of the pens making it unusable, and caused the degradation of the epinephrine in the other epipen making it far less effective. By the time we got to her, she was in cardiac arrest. She had massive inflammation and hives that covered about 90% of her body. Intubation was impossible because her epiglottis and larynx were swollen shut, but I managed to get an airway using a quicktrach device and successfully resuscitated her. She arrested twice on the way to the life flight helipad, and several times in flight. Unfortunately, due to a few other underlying conditions she passed away a few hours later.

So we blame the company because some one assume something. So no one takes personal responsibility any more. It’s every one fault but you own. She was way old enough to read. If the package was open. His friend died on her birthday after eating something with peanuts or peanut oil at a restaurant during her birthday party. Also, as a nanny/babysitter and teacher I have always been hyper aware of kids and allergies. My church lost a child to an allergic reaction very similar to this a few years ago and we have been even more vigilant when interacting with children wether it be at camp or in class to have their allergies come first. Parents need to be more vocal and let people know as well though, it goes both ways. I know that with all the families I work with I have made sure to ask as well as had parents tell me on their own so you can never be too safe/informed when it comes to allergies!

MY personal opinion is if such allergies are so dangerous then people with them should cook their own food at home using bio food products, and get extra funding from the their health insurance or from government sources to pay the excess costs.IT will save them costs of highly expensive medicine to rectify any illness caused from eating the wrong cheap products on the market.

Most of these allergies occur because mothers do not eat any nuts during pregnancy. When we start avoiding all these foods then kids will be more inclined to have these deadly reactions.

TJ Michael that’s an incorrect statement. Am allergic to all tree nuts, a bunch of vegetables, wheat, seafood etc etc trust me my mother is a health nut and has always consumed nuts and all kinds of veggies, it has nothing to do with that and more to do with your body’s ability to process the things you are allergic to. Allergies reset every 7 years in the human body, they can become less dangerous or more. It’s a scientific fact.

My question is if this girl knew she was extremely allergic to peanut butter than she had to have tasted it before so I would think that it wouldn't take multiple bites to tell but at the same time I do know people have reactions just being close to the things there allergic too. For some reason I don't picture the friends parents being around when she ate these cookies because I think that they had to have known that she was allergic to them but then again I would think that the parents would talk to any adult about her allergies and what to do and send an epi pen with her. When one of my friends who is diabetic came over, her parents told my family what to do and luckily my mom is a nurse and she knows how to treat patients and knows what they can and can't have. I'm sorry for there loss, it just takes one mess up or accident to change people's lives forever

This is her own fault. Sorry to be so harsh and blunt and I'm very sorry for the family's loss. However, she knows her allergy and should be extremely diligent about checking if her allergy was this serious. My 4 year old daughter has an extreme dairy allergy (thankfully not fatal however still serious) and I literally check everything she eats even if she's eaten it before. I tell everyone we know not to feed my daughter anything unless I check labels or ingredients and my daughter knows not to eat anything unless she asks mommy or daddy first and she is very good at that. Chips Ahoy clearly labeled this product. This is awful but she should've checked. Also, peanut butter has a strong smell -- how did she not smell it?? She should've had her EpiPen on her and she should've had someone call 911 immediately. Prayers for the family. Very sad but preventable.

Another friend has such a bad dairy allergy, that when someone just spilled some of their milk on his skin, it puffed up bad and he had to go to the hospital. I feel like schools should treat allergies similarly, cause it always seems to be peanuts, but other allergies can be just as bad if not worse, but also, where would banning food stop then?

I went to the E.R today 😞 after school lunchtime! I didn’t eat anything, as I know how to avoid reactions. I pack my lunch, but even a small amount of peanut dust, oil, and any small amount. My principal thinks that a sign is going to fix everything, but I’m not stupid! I don’t sit with people who have peanuts, or any kind of nut. The thing is they don’t even keep the sign there during the other grades lunch times, so a kid could sit there eating a pbj sandwich 🥪 and then the janitor will “clean” the tables by a quick swoop over them with one cloth that has been used on all the other tables. People just don’t understand how serious it is! You can’t clean a table with peanut shmear on it, and then go and clean the “peanut free table” with the same cloth and expect me to be fine! Ughhhhh 😑 and then they blame it on me because “I haven’t been putting the sign on my table”. Wtf?!? How is my allergy my fault?!?! They just don’t get it!!!

Some of the men in the shop who never brought anything were always the first to grab them. One of those guys came in upset and asked what are in these cookies cause I can't have nuts. Like how dare I do such a thing to make them with nuts. Some did and some didnt. No one was aware of this allergy except for him. This was in front of all 5 of us girls and then he threw the cookie at me across the room and it hit me in the face and then took off. He did it so fast I couldn't even duck. You should have seen the look on the other girls faces. I didn't report it but guess what I made sure after that there was nuts in all the cookies i made after that. All he had to do was come to me in a nice way then I would have told him which ones were not with nuts. He never brought anything in. He was a senior tech and made more then me. He already had a rep of being a whiner in the shop too.

If you go into anaphylaxis use your pen, call emergency services _(or have someone drive you to ER if you have good reason to believe you’ll get there quicker than an ambulance will get to you)_ - and use your second pen if youre breathing/state isn’t low risk if you aren’t getting medical attention quickly enough

This is devastating. I feel so deeply sorry for this family. If she didn’t have Epipen access immediately, as well as Benedryl on hand to take, dire anaphylaxis can be close to immediate. Yes, food packaging needs to have special glaring FDA allergy warning symbols, especially peanut allergies. Thank you, Megan. Also, it’s crucial for the public to understand that pet dander can also cause severe anaphylaxis in certain children and/or adults. It’s crucial for the public to understand when the general public keeps insisting on bringing their pets into restaurants, venues, on planes with them, etc. without taking into consideration the life & death consequences involved for those highly-allergic who have to share those public spaces. Ever since the crackdown law of not leaving your pet in a hot car, there has been a spike in pets coming into food places and spikes in anaphylaxis at these venues.

So wait, I have to buy cookies with other kids in mind ??? I have allergies and I’m very careful and always ask.. also, carry your epi pen... also, her mother should of taken her to the hospital, like the pen clearly states

Hello, I would like to silence those comments saying that she wasn't careful with her allergies because that is bogus. She was a friend of mine who voiced her allergy many times and was super careful. She wouldn't even step foot into a place that had any peanut ingredient used in their menu or would kindly as the workers to change their gloves. Also, she knew how dangerous her allergies were and carried an epi-pen everywhere. It wouldn't hurt Chips Ahoy to change their packaging color if it contains peanuts just to prevent others from committing the same mistake.

Lmao her mom essentially killed her and now wants to blame the company. Epipens wear off so she should have been hospitalized. Both should have been educated

This story should be taught to ALL packaging students in college. Easy to create a more prominent difference in packaging.

I'm sorry, 15 should be old enough to read. If the allergy was this severe why not carry the epi pens EVERYWHERE? And to not tell ppl who are giving you food. I'm genuinely curious. Rip

Sad 4 the girl that did look at labels the companies have it written on the back the ingredients in them. And reeses on it. I have worked in a places where there try to promote nut free zones but there will be a peanut shell dropped right next to the nut free zone or parents have asked did anyone have peanuts at this table but unless you can see someone at a table eating peanuts can not say one way or another. All i can say maybe just disinfect the table in case.

Am rose I went to the E.R today 😞 after school lunchtime!

I don't want to take a blame-the-victim position but this is why I read EVERY label VERY carefully. My allergy isn't fatal but if I eat certain things I risk suffering from a painful cytokine storm for days.

People with severe allergies need to have controlled microdosing at a hospital clinic. The allergy will still exist, but the severity lessens. It's done where medical intervention is right at hand.

How sad I know how it feels to have a nut allergies you've got to keep on top of it you've got to read all of the labels fore you eat I just wish the writing on the labels would be bigger and that the allergy ingredients would be on the top first cause it's scary to go thru anaphylactic shock

Unfortunately some people don't realize how bad food allergies can be. There was a young woman, allergic to peanuts who died after kissing her boyfriend on the lips after he had been eating peanuts. Imagine a minute amount of peanut residue or oil on his lips is all it took to set off a fatal reaction.
