I was visiting an industrial museum in a European country, and they had a little building with replicas of the living conditions of *workers* from the 1880s to the 1980s or something. And I was looking at this room of the 1920s, and was thinking, an average Beijing urban family would live like this in about 1970 or later. It also said that by the 1960s, fridges and washing machines were common household items in this European country - fridges were somehow still fancy for a Beijing family in the 1980s. I grew up knowing that China is a developing country and our living standards are a bit lower. But living a rather comfortable life in a big city, I didn't really feel that until that moment at the museum. Once, we were SO behind - and it was not that long ago. ... There were loads of things that are not quite nice about China - and it's ok to talk about them. But there is no joke when an average family, especially those from smaller towns and rural places, can have such a HUGE rise in living standards over a few decades. And China is still developing - when public facilities are broken, they are fixed quickly (it sounds stupid but it does surprise me when I see broken things stay broken for ages in "developed" countries), the functioning ones are well-maintained, and new facilities and services are coming out on a daily basis. Although things are slowing down a bit, there is hope, and the people will never give up the hope and hardwork for a better life. ... The world really should see this. Not to boast or compare which is better. But just to know that there is "another" way of living, and the people themselves are happy with it. And also that in the end, we are all so similar. It really shouldn't be about the political vocabulary, it should be about just life. Live and let live

I love your tshirt that says “looking backwards” when you were summarizing your last 15 years but “looking forward” when you turned around and commented about your future 15 years!

Maybe your translation is a bit too poetic... The literal meaning is look at the back (of the shirt). 😃

@@TravelinChina In Chinese people say “以前”(forward) to refer to the past while “以后”(backward) to refer to the future, and it’s interesting to compare this to English where “looking backwards” refer to the past and “looking forward” refer to the future. Seems like people speaking different languages treat the timeline differently. I guess you’ll have to face the camera with your back all the time if you made this video in Chinese😂

It's a very touching video for me. As a foreigner I've been living in england for 16 years, I had travelled most of the china since I was a kid with my parents, travel alone after I reached 18, then came to england and travel around Europe. I am fascinated by the history, food and people I've met. I can see the change of china from your lens, I'm glad I've been to those famous and non famous places before they were well developed, as not many people nowadays could experience going to a toilet being built above 2 parallel board behind a canvas in deep mountain. 😂 each of us is a witness of history, those highs and lows made our lives and made us grow. Sturt, have you found what you looking for?
