I give a review of my Mahindra tractor after owning it for 15 years, including what I like about it, why I bought it, all the problems I've had with it, and what I wish they would change. I do the annual maintenance, and fix a couple issues with it. I used to own a John Deere tractor and I give my experiences with that too. This is not a sponsored video, just giving my honest opinions. I finish with some of my favorite tips, including things to watch out for with safety, and nice additions to the tractor like a shade canopy and tool box.

Here are the common reasons why the Independent Power Take-Off (IPTO) alarm might go off: 1) Engagement Issues: If there are problems with engaging or disengaging the IPTO, such as a faulty clutch or linkage, the alarm may activate to alert the operator to the issue. 2) Overload: If the PTO-driven implement or attachment is putting too much strain on the IPTO system, it may trigger an overload alarm. This can happen if the implement encounters a blockage or experiences excessive resistance. 3) Low Hydraulic Pressure: Some tractors use hydraulic pressure to engage the IPTO. If there is low hydraulic pressure, it can lead to difficulties in engaging the PTO, and the alarm may activate. 4) Malfunctions: Any mechanical or electrical malfunctions in the IPTO system, such as sensor failures or wiring issues, can cause the alarm to go off. 5) Safety Features: Some tractors have safety features that activate an alarm when the IPTO is engaged and the tractor's seat is unoccupied. This is to prevent accidents when the operator is not in control of the tractor. 6) Temperature or Oil Pressure: Some tractors have alarms that monitor the temperature or oil pressure in the IPTO system. If these parameters go out of the specified range, an alarm may sound. 7) Low RPMs: Some IPTO systems have alarms that activate if the engine RPM drops below a certain level while the IPTO is engaged. This is to prevent damage to the equipment.

Great content, @bruce5285, thanks for taking the time to post this here! I would add the obvious, that these alarm conditions rely on sensors that themselves could be defective, such as the "tractor's seat occupied", which sounds like a sensor that could easily malfunction. When it comes to fault sensors, it might help to keep in mind that the designers of such equipment tend to think in terms of a single fault. Multiple faults tend to be a design nightmare; even if the designers think about multiple simultaneous faults, it's easy to miss "corner cases". For this reason, I would be hesitant to disable an annoying alarm, since the next sensor failure drops you into the multiple-fault condition where you really don't want to be. I once read a book that was a collection of case studies where engineering designs ended up killing people. Many of the case studies resulted from operators ignoring a fault alarm, which itself wasn't dangerous, but combined with a second/third fault that occurred later and created a lethal hazard.

@@miltonthecat2240. @Bruce5285 These are great points. It is possible that multiple alarm conditions can be generated. I used to work in a chemical plant on an oxidizer control board. We had numerous alarms on pressures, flows, and temperatures. Some were monitoring liquids, others gases. Often, there were so many alarms that would go off at once, It was hard to determine what exactly was the ‘primary’ fault and which was the secondary conditions of the first fault. Luckily, the instrumentation and electrical departments came up with a “First Out” system. The very first condition that set off the alarm would blink…… All the others would just illuminate. It was very easy to know exactly what was wrong and try to fix the condition. It would be interesting to know if there are multiple alarm conditions on this tractor and see which one is the First Out!!

Kubota, Mahindra, TYM and Kioti were on my list. John Deere has lost me as a customer due to their build quality and anti-right to repair lobbying. I ended up with a 50hp Kioti because of the standard options for a fraction of a similar Kubota, competitive with the TYM and Mahindra but a good dealer nearby.

The pricing delta between Kubota and Kioti isn't fractional. I admit, you get more features at a slightly lower cost with Kioti. Around my area, SE Michigan, Kubota and Kioti are the most popular utility tractor brands. Mahindra has, several times, tried to make in-roads in my area without success. Most folks are more focused on dealer support than the brand and Kuboa and Kioti have the presents. John Deere sunk in the utility brand when they switched to Chinese-manufactured tractors and folks turned their backs on them. Other brands have also tried to make in-roads with little success, not that they are a bad brand, more because Kubota has the reputation as "bullet proff" and Kioti isn't far behind.

@@InLineDiesel6I cross shopped kioti, kubota, John deere & Massey about 20 years ago. Looking for a tractor around 50hp The deere dealers barely had time to give me a price since I wasn’t buying a $100k+ piece of equipment. The kubota dealer was advertising a “deal” that became much less of a deal when you actual talked to them in person. The kioti dealer was great to work with and ended up selling me a 55hp tractor. It’s had some issues, some my fault some kioti’s. The real concern I have now is, that dealer closed up about 10 years ago & there isn’t much support out there any where for this series.

IPTO switch and hooter are coupled in parallel to the glowplug timer relay you removed...it's on the wiring diagram you posted on the forum. If you change resistance in a circuit,or parameters required by a computer you can trigger "HOOTERS" haha Check corrosion and integrity on the manual glowplug switch.

Change your main hydraulic filter and if you haven’t changed the hydraulic oil after 1700 hours I would recommend Changing it and inspect/ cleaning the suction screen for the hydraulics. IPTO independent power take off its clutch pack uses hydraulic pressure to engage the pto clutch pack. Hopefully this will give a little insight and help figure out the problem before it causes damage that requires the tractor to be split to repair

I’m not sure what model my uncles mahindra is, 2006ish 32-35 horse? Something like that. Anyways I was disappointed with it, hydraulic filters were in the rear wheel well, rubber hydraulic connections under the belly. I borrowed it to York rake some small tree debris, sent a stick through the hydraulic filter in the wheel well then another stick pulled a hose off the tube under the belly that was just clamped on. Returned it 16 years ago and never borrowed it again. Bought myself a skid steer

I just did the same evaluation that you did regarding purchasing a new tractor and I settled on a TYM T754HC. I wanted a cab and Mahindra didn't make one (and they are more expensive). When compared to the John Deere and Kubota, I'm right at $17k cheaper and getting a lot more extras for that price (3rd function valve, loaded tires, lights front and rear, arm rest seat, rear windshield wiper just to name a few). TYM is a South Korean made tractor. I'll having it delivered to me in about 4 weeks. Love our channel and thanks for showing and teaching about all the repair work you've done.

I bought a 38 horsepower tractor in 2019, and in that size most of the manufacturers were very close to each other in price. I ended up buying a Mahindra for many of the same reasons you mentioned. But one of the most important factors in buying a tractor should be the dealer. They need to treat you well and service what they sell. You don’t want to take your tractor 4 hours away for service if you need it. If they’re difficult to deal with in the sales process, they’ll be worse if you have a warranty claim.

Oh, and I am from India. I started my carrier with Tech Mahindra, worked a little less than 6 years there. It makes me feel good, when such apritiation comes not from the sales/marketing teams, but from the people working in the field. Mahindra is popular in SUVs also here in India, they make really good ones with decent price.

Two biggest complaints I have heard of Mahindra's over the years is the lack of dealer support. They seem to come and go around here. The second is electrical issues. It seems like the electronic interlocks etc. are kind of secondary to the mechanical design and they have high failure rates from rubbing, component failure and strained/broken wires.

The one big issue with buying "off" brands, or even the less popular name brands, is finding parts, and service centers for them, which is why people usually stick to certain brands. You are mostly just paying for the name with John Deere IMHO, but they do have a lot of dealer networks, and support going for them, which can be a benefit. JD does use a lot of proprietary, and non-interchangeable/model specific parts, though, which means you have to buy directly from the dealer (which means more $$$).

I have a 5570 and did exactly what you did. Checked out several different brands and did my homework for almost a year and a half. With bucket, bale spear, 7 ' brush hog, auger and tires loaded it was $12000 less than John Deere and $9000 less than Kubota which were both tremendously lighter and shorter wheel base than the Mahindra. I bought it new in 2015 and have over 700 hours with very little issues. One being a crank sensor at 50 hrs and a egr valve cleaning at around 500 hrs. It's been an amazing tractor and use it with an 81" grapple and at handles it wonderfully. I would definitely do it again.

Enjoy your videos. On your bush hog and tire scrub, most pull type bush hogs I've looked at have an angle limitation you should observe to keep from damaging the driveline. Your turns looked pretty sharp to me, even though it looked like there was a CV joint at the tractor PTO connection in addition to the U-joints. Sharp turns can be hard on the tractor PTO as well, putting pulsating and side loading on the system.
@caseyrevoir
@caseyrevoir 8 ай бұрын
To that effect, U joints do not spin in a circle unless perfectly straight. Many have probably seen this with an [older] stuck 4wd when the front wheels jerk during rotation (not to be confused with the power going from left to right from an open diff). This is amplified the further the angle the joint is put in.

I think you got a good one there. This is how it's SUPPOSED to be after 15 years of mindful use and maintenance. I have so far only owned tractors designed in the 70s and 80s. That is my sweet spot for everything being mechanical and metal. Minimal plastic or electrical. But of course it is basically hobby use and a production/profit mindset would likely change my priorities. But, as a highly trained technician who COULD keep up with something modern, i very much enjoy choosing NOT to and expect my future equipment purchases will mostly be staying in those two decades for the foreseeable future!!

Glad to see you back after your Dam break. :) When I needed more from my tractor I moved from a Kubota B3030 (Japan) to a Kioti DK4710SE (Korea). Sounds like your reasons were very similar to mine. I didn't have any problems with my Kubota, but the the price delta between Kioti and Kubota for similar performance was >$10k. I didn't even look at JD in that mid size tractor because in all honesty it's their weakest product. JD is on the high side of price, they don't even make them (Yanmar), and their focus is really creature comfort not performance. I wanted >2k lb lift capacity on the FEL and the Kioti does that all day long. I've had it for ~5 years and she's been pretty flawless. I do think your Mahindra is at the sweet spot of diesel reliability since it's pre-emissions. I haven't had any problems with the Kioti, but fuel economy on an emissions tractor is IMHO ~20% lower. The FEL on my Kioti does eventually leak down, but it's over a 24hr period so I find that acceptable. I would say the same about dealers. Kioti, like Mahindra, isn't the best but the internet and ebay solve a lot of that if you're a DIYer.

I've got a compact Mahindra 2555 with forks and a loader, no backhoe. This thing has been a work horse. I too do a little logging and milling on my property. It was able to lift 12 foot, 38", very wet, red oak logs. Barely, but it did it.

when in highschool, a farmer I worked for got his bib coveralls caught in a PTO. thankfully it was so violent of an encounter that it simply ripped them off, splitting the seams right up the middle. A lesson i've never forgotten.

Really interesting video. Thanks for doing this. About a year ago I decided to upgrade my John Deere 3032e. The only reason I looked in to Mahindra was because of FarmCraft101. I figured if you bought one, they must be ok. Found out they were the most popular farm tractor in the world. If there were more dealers around I probably would have gone that direction. I ended up buying a Kubota L4701 HST. Very happy with that so far.

Wonderful video! I concur on the value of Mahindra, I was impressed by it when I was shopping 15 years ago. I did end up with another brand, but I was looking for a compact tractor and the price difference wasn't great in that case. Unfortunately, my local Mahindra (and New Holland) dealer closed up later. I watched most or all of your dozer videos, and was really surprised to see "made in Japan" cast into very heavy components. Never saw that coming..... lastly, nearly every seal on my backhoe attachment failed with a 6 month period. I also wondered if there was something I had done wrong, but I figured they were old. I bought the backhoe attachment used, and it could be older than the tractor. Interestingly, of the six cylinders on the backhoe, five use the same seal kit. About $60 each from Kubota.

IPTO Hooter got me and I had to look it up. Found this on a forum. "The term IPTO means the PTO is independent of main clutch. The power is transmitted to the PTO shaft through an IPTO clutch which can be engaged or disengaged by the IPTO clutch lever. The IPTO clutch is always to be kept in the engaged position. The horn (beeper in my book) will sound each time the IPTO clutch is disengaged. If you leave the IPTO clutch disengaged for any length of time, bad things will happen to the guts of your IPTO clutch. So if you don't get a horn when disengaging the IPTO clutch...................go get it fixed. So to use your PTO takes 3 movements. Disengage the IPTO clutch, shift the PTO to ON from the OFF position, then re-engage the IPTO clutch. "

Always educational and a learning journey. Not to nit pick but at minute 38:25 at lower left the outside wheel needs replacing or maybe traded with an inner wheel as it seems to be crucial in controlling the bush hog height. Love all your videos ! 👍👍👍

You can use an old tire innertube cut in 1/2 and sling it under the P T O shaft for the bush hog or a sickle bar to keep tall grasses from getting warped the around P T O shaft!

Hey John, I was wondering if it would be worth getting some older haying equipment and making those fields into bales for the winter. Would that be worth it? Since you have a hay barn to store it all. Love your channel!

Here where I live, we use a metal plate and screws to repair the tire when it's cracked like this, it works great.

I'd recommend casting a concrete counter weight or two for the 3 point hitch coupled with quick hitch kit they're really handy.

I used to follow a KZbinr over in Illinois who strongly promoted the Branson brand of tractors. Like a fool I didn’t do due diligence to see where the nearest dealer was and bought 78 hp model with a cab from the cheapest dealer I could find. He was located 250 miles west of me in the Tulsa area and the tractor was delivered free. When I soon had a problem I found the nearest dealer who did service was 120 miles south of my place in Arkansas. Bad mistake on my part # 1. Then 3 years later with low hours on the tractor Branson goes out of business. Now I can’t sell it locally because no one with sense wants a tractor they can’t get parts or service for any place close. Mistake 2 but I had no way of foreseeing that happening except that if I had scoped out the scarce location dealers in advance I wouldn’t have bought this brand in the first place. I was somewhat lucky to hear that TWM is going to support the brand for a while so I was able to trade it in on a smaller model of the well regarded brand with service within 50 miles. I took a beating on the trade but I deserved it for being dumb up front. I enjoy your videos. They are informative and enjoyable to watch. Keep them coming!

John, I always enjoy your videos. I also have a Mahindra I bought in 2006 brand new. I bought a 6000 a little smaller than yours. Wish I would have gotten a 4 Wheel Drive. I was talk out of it by my local dealer who had inventory on the 2 Wheel Dr. models. I agree with you for the money It’s been a great tractor.

Interesting video John, we can thank Harry Ferguson for the Hydraulic Three Point Hitch System, his tie up with Henry Ford was an interesting story in its self. P.S. Farming is one of the top industrial killers here in the U.K. Many reasons, Farm workers are usually working alone, lack of supervision, & training. Confined space entry. Lack of structured Work Plans & Risk Assessment.
