Thanks for the great project idea. The hardest thing to get was the M12 bolt, I ended up finding one at our local Autozone. For anyone else that might hit this, the wires that go from the controller (the one linked to in the description) to the motor didn’t match for me. When I plugged in the three wires to their matching colors I could hear the motor in the hub hum but the wheel didn’t turn. I ended up with (from controller to motor) yellow to yellow, blue to green and green to blue. I hope that helps out anyone else that might hit this issue.

My coworker bought an e-bike for exercise and to lose weight. She rode it to work everyday and a year later complained she hasn't lost any weight. I told her she needs to pedal the bike to get exercise and possibly lose weight. She rolled her eyes and said "I'm not going to do that".

Why doesmt someone just sell an all in one kit for $200
@ebikeengineer
@ebikeengineer 2 жыл бұрын
@@americanpatriot212 Because to get a $200 kit you need to used surplus parts (like the wheels and batteries Jehu is offering. By doing it yourself (gathering the materials from his list both surplus and the new controller kit) the price can be low. If one person where to gather everying - that person's time and effort is going to add value (gotta pay for the workers time) and the price will be much higher.

So inspiring Jehu. I've been following you from the spinning camera adapter days. I just bought my wife an ebike and I would like to bike with her, but I'm in hospice and have no balance. You inspired me to take on building a three wheel ebike, as I can't afford to buy a three wheel electric, and I just ordered the wheel from you. I'm very excited. I have to thank you sir, you are very inspiring. P.S. I'm pretty sure I bought a spinning adapter from you back in the day...of course that's long gone.

These have become some of my favorite projects over the last year. My daughter uses her bike now to get to work and college instead of spending money on gas. I just wish more of these wheels were available, as they are the perfect wheel for bikes that still get pedaled and builds where you want AWD as when they are not powered they free wheel without drag (unlike the non geared hub motors). I hope you get more of these in someday! The 30 cell packs are pefect for builds, but for more range it's hard to beat the Shorty R5.

Definitely a great project. I'm looking for more of the wheels they are very nice for building beginner bikes. I want to build more; this is a cheap wheel for beginners. I found a similar wheel on eBay but couldn't get it to work. It says 'new, out of the box.' Thanks, Jehu Garcia, for a fun ride on my new E-bike...! & transportation on demand. Batteries are great too. If you can point us in the right direction for cheap E-wheels. Also wanted to add; I put on a lot of muscle and lost some fat. It's a good way to entice yourself to exercise. I'm pleased with the results so far over one summer. I look forward to more summers. Thanks

I bought a conversion kit off eBay about 5 or 6 years ago for $150 and put it on my mountain bike. At that time I couldn't find lithium batteries for less than $400, so I used lead which cost around $60. It was fast and good for about 20 minutes. But, that was the heaviest piece of crap, that took for ever to charge. It's crazy how technology changes so fast.

I legit have been looking for exactly this kind of build. I have an old trail bike I've wanted to convert to an ebike, and possibly add fat tires as well, but the cost of all the conversion kits are ridiculous or way underpowered and won't break 15mph. So now I'm going to use this method, have a friend 3D print some housings and brackets so it's not all zip ties, and see how many battery packs I can fit in the frame space in parallel for the most range (I'm guessing about 4 of the largest ones, so maybe about 80 miles per charge. Unless I do 2xParallel of 2xSeries so I've got 40 miles of 70v for MOAR POWAH

I know what we're asking Santa for my kid for christmas this year. Dirt bike is nice, but this is so much more practical for any kid. I'm thinking an aluminum bracket mounted to the frame to hold the battery so you can take it with you to charge (at work, friends house, etc...) plus it becomes significantly less attractive to a thief if they can't just make it go, or steal the battery.

I did this conversion on my girlfriends Cruiser Bike. It is a single speed. It now goes faster than my road bike! It is a blast! Not much torque but it does have upper end power as you see in the video. The controller is garbage and took some tinkering to get to work. Tip, when you turn it on the wheel automatically accelerates! This is because it does a self calibration mode. Once I figured this out it was good to go.

I have a few old bikes, and I'm kicking around the idea of making an e-bike. I've seen several reviews and how-to videos, and it seems that people are recommending powering the rear wheel of a bike. The front wheel headset, the tube on the front of the frame with bearings that connect to the handlebars, is not made for the torque of the electric motor. It can damage the headset, even breaking the welds that hold the headset to the frame. I don't know how much of a problem it will be, but something to consider. With me being "El Gordo", I'll need extra power to get me up the hills, which means extra extra torque will be needed, and extra strain on the frame.

Great vid. I have now done my research and found a 1000W crank drive motor (which have the most torque) and a complete kit ... will do 90km/hr once I fit it to a mountain bike I am about to buy! normally that sort of power with 52V @ 30AH system is around $6K (NZD) and I am going to build it for less than $2K (NZD = $1300)USD.

I like the idea of the motor that sits next to the pedals, because when you wanna use it just as a normal bike, it doesn't add un-neccessary rotational mass to the wheel, but I don't know if that can fit into this budget. I mean less than $150 is great

I know it's a year later. In my research, there are pluses and minuses to what you describe, a mid-drive e-bike conversion. The plus as you mentioned is you can use the gearing. The minus is for a novice user, they can destroy the chain or derailleur if they are in the "wrong" gear and get on the throttle. For someone who is an avid cyclist, the mid-drive is probably the way to go as they understand the gearing and will use it properly. For others, a hub motor, front or rear is the way to go. While not taking advantage of the gearing, there is also less chance of destroying the drive train. There are rear hub motors as well and I think that would be more natural ride experience. Having a FWD bicycle just seems odd to me. While a RWD bicycle is probably more stable. Finally, while the conversion depicted in the video just used a throttle, the controllers have input for a pedaling sensor, making them able to just do assist. Meaning it won't go unless you pedal.

Same. I want to do it with a trike and a dual motor would be ideal… or triple motor! The basket and towing capacity and extra frame pieces mean I could carry a ridiculously large battery arrangement. :)

@@emmettturner9452 I am curious just where would you use the second motor? If used on just one rear side, there will be sideways motion added, making it very unstable. It will take 3 motors to make it stable. Or, at least more stable. I have a trike also and I have not even considered this. I don't find it necessary.

Well, after all my griping, here's what happened. It's surprisingly easy to put it together. There are a couple things that needed to be cut and have plugs put on them. Fortunately I had some xt60's laying around. I got it up and running, and it works great. Two of the wires had to be switched. They said that it was out of phase, so they told me to switch to of the motor power wires and it worked. If your do-it-yourself'er, can solder a little bit, and aren't scared of diving in headfirst, it's not a big deal. I have a great bike that goes 22 miles an hour, and will last for about 20 miles, and I only have $200 invested with the bike! Lol
