Good video. I wish it was better resolution but after all it only goes up to 1987. So a thirty year old documentary. Still it covers the history pretty well. And of course the story of Red Rum is included with some awesome footage.

Greatest, most famous race around the world but, the toughest betting race. The bookies love it with Once a year punters & Severely under priced horses. Thank You RedRum, would it still be going without him???

Loved getting this video thirty years ago. It, and Reg Green's book sparked my own, and a great many others, interest in the race. Alas for poor Mr Green and indeed Aintree, it meant that those of us who trawled the old newspapers found his book full of errors and that, as far as the Victorians at least were concerned, The Duke won the first national in 1836 while the '37 and '38 races were run over the same course at Aintree too. While the 37 and 38 were very poor to be considered Grand Nationals, that first running in 1836 was every bit as competitive as 39 and would give poor old Becher a much more fitting race legacy.

The race is not the challenge that it was for these legendary horses and jockeys. Ruined by dogooders.

@@trevormeeks4084yes it was Hallo Dandy but he wasn’t technically abandoned. He was on loan to someone, who had just turned him out in a field on their estate. His owners were horrified and took him back. Had the pleasure of seeing him back to full health leading the Parade of Champions at Aintree.

@@dawnkeir549it was Hallo Dandy and it was the people he was on loan to who neglected him 😢 His owners were horrified and took him back. I was lucky enough to see him leading the Parade of Champions years later and he was used as an ambassador for the care of retired racehorses.
