@@bronwenhabberley5985 I haven't forgotten. I always thought Brian and Rummy were the ultimate dream team, as they seemed to understand each other perfectly. Tommy was a fine jockey and worthy to take over the reins, after Ginger and Brian's fall -out, however. Both brilliant jockeys in their own right
@bronwenhabberley59854 жыл бұрын
Helene Millar did Brian fletcher ride again after Rummy? He seemed to disappear after the national, to think he had 3 wins at Aintree 2 on Rummey & 1 on Red Alligator & nothing more was heard of him. As well as Rummey what jockey can claim they won 3 Grand Nationals.

I believe Brian Fletcher fractured his skull in a fall at the age of 26? I believe that to have been in a racing incident - ie a fall... He then retired - I may be wrong. Very happy memories of the Red Rum years - he saved the National at that crucial time in the races history... In 1973 at the age of 15 I had my 50p to win on Crisp. Watching the Red Rum Nationals on KZbin even now gives me goosebumps and I'm not ashamed to say tears in my eyes to. Not because I lost my 50p either - HAHAHA! After that year I backed Red Rum in the next 4 Nationals. What an amazing horse both he and Ginger McCain were such unique characters weren't they? If you like the history of the National look up Poethelyn winner of the WW1 substitute race at Gatwick Racecourse ridden by Lester Piggots father (or grandfather?) They then repeated the win the next year in 1919 when the race returned to Aintree... I enjoyed reading your posts on here - thank you. Rob...

My Dad was head groom at a racing stables and he often took their horses galloping on Brean Sands. He always said the sea water was brilliant for horses legs. He also always said that RedRum was a very intelligent looking horse. He must have been a superb jumper as he wasn't a big horse and the Aintree fences were huge in those days. Must of been an enormous thrill to ride him. Best horse ever.

Loved red rum the poster boy racehorse, what a legend he became a celebrity no other steeplechaser will ever beat that record over monstrous fences compared to today's Aintree fences.

best horse ever lol. Do you even understand that Red Rum wasnt even a grade 1 horse. meaning he was lesser quality of horse than Crisp. Hence Crisp had to be handicapped by carrying 23lb more just to give Red Rum a level playing field. It's the equvilent of Manchester Utd playing Millwall FCand giving Millwall FC a 3 goal start because Man Utd are the much better team

@@kevinthecarrot1448 That was one year you absolute Carrot, the year after Red Rum's rating had gone up 23lbs and he beat a Gold Cup winner, giving him weight, you do realise horses improve dont you?

@@kevinthecarrot1448 red rum wasn't a grade 1 horse haha to this day only 1 horse after red rum has won the hardest steeple chase in the world twice ( tiger roll) and they had to shrink the fences for that to even happen , youre correct crisp couldn't win the national with 12 stone but guess what Red rum did lol , twice haha.

Tiger Roll is a smashing little horse with a great Cheltenham record to boot but a record of 11221 over 5 years at Aintree with bigger fences and an extra quarter of a mile in those days puts Rummy as the best. And he often carried 12 stone and gave weight to gold cup winners whereas Tiger has carried 10-13 and 11-5, Two great horses
@jamesvaughan15908 ай бұрын
L'Escargot carried 11st 3lbs and Red Rum carried 12st. 11lb not a stone and a half.

@@darksharkrafa1 You judge jockeyship on one ride a year & have the temerity to call me thick? Over a ten year period, Stack's percentage winners to rides was better than Fletchers. Fletcher gave Red Rum one of the worst rides ever given round Aintree in 1975 & you could have ten guesses and not come back & tell me why that was the case, because you know fuck all about race riding you bloody quarterwit.
@darksharkrafa14 жыл бұрын
Listen here bird brain..this video clip is about Red Rum...i am just stating a fact that Brian Fletcher was the better jockey around Aintree than Tommy Stack..in fact he was the best jockey of the 20th century around Aintree. He won the national 3 times and got a second and 2 third places to his name. I am not saying he is better than Stack generally as Stack won the championship twice and Fletcher was runner up once. Sadly as a northern jockey hedid not get the same opportunities as Stack and he retired at 26 after a fractured skull. We will never know how good he could have been. Stack was lucky to get the 1976 and 1977 rides on Rummy. They should of been Brians. Who knows he may of won them both. As for temerity, you had the audacity to swear at me in your previous comment, which riled me. Hope that clears matters up.
