The problem is that spacex has painted themselves into a corner with the stainless. If they want to make the ship work with the design philosophy of the structure baring some of the thermal load there’s only one option: titanium. They are going to have to keep adding tps until the whole ship is protected, then the whole point of the steel is moot. Might as well build out of aluminum for 5th the weight. If they want to have starship fly the way it is now they have to do titanium, otherwise they fly 5-10 times with like 6 month turn around times.

I don't see how they are painted into a corner. It would make sense to use S.S. for these early disposable prototypes. Titanium can still come later with high value reusable operational versions.

@ I mean that they’ve painted themselves into a corner of constant development. They keep needing to put bandaids on bandaids. The first boosters were supposed to lift 100t they actually lifted 25-30t. The flaps were burning through now we’ve gotta add more weight with an entire ablative undercoat. That undercoat isn’t good enough, it’s still burning through. Now we’ve got to move the flaps and actively cool. Now we need to wait for raptor 3 to come online and save our margins. All of these things are bandaids onto the issue of the reentry environment being harsher than the design can take. If they’d just bite the bullet and rip off the bandaid and switch to a material that can handle the stress all these problems would be solved. Oh and by the way, there’s a lot of criticism of titanium being so hard to work with. I just want to say that Kelly Johnson built a12s and sr71s back in like 1960. That’s when they had like just discovered that they could even work with titanium. It can 100% be done and will massively increase starship’s capability.

Good Moring my Friend. Everything you a talking about the flap design and the angle of act to come to earth. Tells me that the space program, even though the space industry know a lot, says SpaceX has moved so far past the known information into learn learn much more about the laws of physics that was never known before. This is a real learning experience. Think about the depth of what you are explaining. It's Great stuff. What a Great Report/Episode. He's got a ways to go of course . But the strides SpaceX is mind blowing. It's fun to watch. I alway learn a lot from Your Reporting. Keep Doing what You are doing my Friend. Have a Great Day. A Great Year. Thanks Again.

Why do you keep saying "reduces dead weight"? You are referring to reducing mass. Pleas stop incorrectly referring to "MASS" with the force unit Weight and help the last two non ISO laggards - USA and Liberia - to get educated - it sounds ridiculous to the rest of the World the way the USA mix ISO units with obsolete Imperial units. ♡♡♡

Musk didn’t suggest making those changes. A much cleverer person working for him suggested the changes. There’s a reason he hired the best technicians available and it was to make things work. He couldn’t do it by himself, because if he could he would’ve done so. Musk has overextended himself as a person, and will continue to because of an overinflated ego. He has issues at Tesla, he has massive problems with t he artist formerly known as Twitter and he is now finding he’s becoming a toxic brand as part of the Trump administration. In fact, there’s even a realism setting in at Trump towers that Elon is more toxic than Trump himself. He is courting far right parties and politicians across Europe, and is trying to meddle in British politics, which could have severe implications for his businesses and the strategic relationship the US has with the UK and others. The best thing he could do is sell twitter, work hard at Tesla and `space X improving the businesses, stop dabbling with fascist politics and keep his troop shut. Oh, and the best thing for Elon would be for Trump to sack him, because I doubt he has the good grace to stand down when he’s clearly out of his depth now. He has made his money and shoudl enjoy it, instead of trying to pour misery on others.

Regardless of the engineering, Starship will only be a low earth orbit craft and it may not achieve this objective. The engineering is overly complex that is susceptible to rapid unscheduled disassembly. This craft is not going to the moon and certainly not Mars!...LOL

No, the Shuttle was overly complex. Starship is quite a lot simpler, except for the engines.
