I get it, and with the fully mechanical locks that have been the norm for a long time this wouldn't work. but with these "smart" locks it has to do with how the electronics interact with the mechanical parts. as once you enter the code or touch the keyfob or what ever alternate task it is to signal you should have access, the electronics must be able to unlock the lock with out needing the key. there's a few ways to go about this, it seems what these guys did was use an electromagnet to attract a pin into position so it would catch and bind the knob in the same way they mechanical bit would when it's unlocked, then when they turn off the electromagnet that pin springs out of place again and unbinds. here's the thing about magnetic pins, it doesn't care what magnet is pulling on it, just that a magnet is pulling on it hard enough and in the right direction to overcome the spring tension. you do need a much stronger magnet then they one they are using because yours is further away and just like with a flashlight the further away from the source the less strength it has. but find one strong enough and move it to the right spot and bam the unlock pin won't be able to tell the difference between the field coming off your magnet and the one from the electromagnet so it'll act like the electromagnet is on, aka unlock the door.

This is unrelated to the lock shown in the video, but today I had a bit of "locksport" validation today. At work there was a padlock securing a locker that we needed into. The person that was accountable for the items inside the locker did not know where the key was. Everyone wanted to grab the "master key", aka bolt cutters, but upon seeing it was a Masterlock I simply produced my Covert Companion. The lock was in poor condition and did not want to be raked, so I then opted to try single pin picking. To everyone's surprise I actually got it open rather quickly. It was the first time I had single pin picked in a real world situation outside of practicing. And yes, I did think to myself, "click on one."

i had something similar at my office. we had a laptop sent back in with a docking station, and the docking station had a lock and no key was provided. i needed to release the laptop from the dock, so of course I had my Covert Companion with me (this was actually the first time i'd used it!). i introduced myself as the lock picking wizard, and then proceeded to rake it open. i had immediate success, so i re-locked it and did it again (to make sure it wasn't a fluke (tm)). it was such an enjoyable moment - picking the lock and solving a real life problem with ease 🙂

(This is a joke, but it could be a true story.) A Sunday school teacher related this story: "I needed some supplies from a Sunday school cupboard that was secured by a combination lock. I didn't know the combination, so I asked our clergyman for it. He said he didn't know the combination either, but that he would open the lock for me. "Father Jack came over to cupboard, took hold of the lock's dial, and raised his eyes heavenward for a moment. Then he looked down, confidently turned the dial and opened the lock. "I told him how impressed I was with his faith. Then, he smiled and confided 'The combination is written on the ceiling.'"

@@peterbrown3404 Tom Scott is fantastic. He gets some rather small details wrong when he talks of stuff out of his field, though. So I'd advice caution in these. The biggest talking points are most often correct, as he wisely runs his script to be rechecked by experts of the field, but he so often touches more than one field of study in a single video. History, law, linguistics, computer science, mathematics, pop culture; he does everything, and because he does everything he often may get details wrong. In fact, it's good to be cautious on any creator that produces content on dozens of very separate fields of study. Scott's background is in computers, so you may trust these the best. Others, like language, not so much. He is monolingual and has no sort of training in that.

I get the feeling LPL is looking for a new futuristic handle to his front door and keeps getting disappointed by his selected products. I wish you the best of luck on your clearly still ongoing search. Knowing that your unique skill set will make it quite challenging to be successful. At least this way it keeps us entertained.

What does the extension do? Normalize sound across videos, or do you have to "teach" it what to do with certain channels? I'm ok with LPL's volume, but there are a LOT of others that are worse. I've given up and stopped following a channel that started leading its videos with loud noises that hurt my ears after normal video volume, and I'm getting annoyed at the ones I have to raise the volume all the way to hear even with good headphones.

They could have run a wire through the lock and put the solenoid on the inside knob. Slightly more prone to wear damage over time, but problem solved. That and a decent lock core and we know what LPL would have on his door.

0:56 I think the idea for writing "LOCK" was for if you were putting that key on a ring with a bunch of other keys, say your car key, so you wouldn't get it mixed up. You still might get it mixed up depending on how many locks you use everyday, but its the thought that counts :)

You might be joking with the keys clarifying say they are for a "LOCK", but i appreciate the note as last time i got one of these products i jammed the keys into my toaster and wondered for hours why it was not working, after the fact, i ended up with burned keys, a broken toaster and a lock of which i forgot the combination (mainly because the package and instructions burned alongside my house when the toaster caught fire, but that's beside the point.)

I had to look this up to be sure when he said 40/1000" (forty-thousandths of an inch), and it is approximately 1mm (one millimetre). In my quick search, I just learned that people in the USA also use mil as a unit of measurement, but they mean 1/1000" and not the abbreviation for millimetre that I'm used to! A metric millimetre is 39.37 US mil.

The magnetic attacks could be mitigated by having another, more sensitive mechanism locking the unlocking when exposed to magnetism. This could be mechanical in locks like this, and in keypads, a second relay could disconnect the output before the main relay could activate the unlocking. A couple of reed relays at different places in the keypad could also trigger a tamper alarm.
